Until the civil war reached it two years ago, Aleppo was Syria's largest city and the country's commercial and industrial hub. Now the ancient city lies in ruins, 70 percent of its population has fled, and those who remain live under siege. Rebel-held areas are under constant bombardment by barrel bombs — crudely improvised explosive devices that are dropped from government aircraft.
As rebel and government forces struggle for total victory, VICE filmmaker Medyan Dairieh followed the volunteers of Aleppo's Civil Defense, a civilian rescue organization, who risk their lives daily as the first responders to government airstrikes in a city seemingly abandoned by the outside world.

A series of bloody attacks has rocked Kenya since the September 2013 Westgate mall massacre in Nairobi that left 67 people dead. The general consensus in the community of scientists and military who deal with EMP (electromagnetic pulse) on a day to day basis, is that a solar or military EMP is not a question of if, it is only a question of when. An EMP takes out electric grids taking out major cities very dangerous for mankind,
On November 5, 2013, the Sun brightened when an X-class solar flare—the largest so far this year—burst from a large, active sunspot. The flare followed a series of more than a two dozen flares that have occurred since October 21, though the November 5 flare originated in a different active region. The event was classified an X3.3 flare, falling into the category of most intense explosions.
Since solar flares heat and distort the ionosphere, they can interfere with radio communication. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center warned of a potential blackout of shortwave radio communication for about an hour after the November 5 flare. This type of communication is often used for long-range aviation, amateur radio, and emergency communication. Beyond radio interference, the flare did not affect Earth.
In 1859 a huge solar storm burned out telegraph wires across Europe and the United States. Dr Stuart Clark has written a book, The Sun Kings, about when that happened. He says that the "Carrington flare", as it was known, "smothered two-thirds of the Earth's skies in a blood-red aurora a night later, and crippled all of global navigation and global communication, such as it was at that time. Compasses span uselessly and the telegraph network went down as phantom electricity surged through the wire."
The sun had indeed been running at a record high for the latter half of the 20th century, and has now died down to its lowest level for a century. But Dr Clark warns that "average levels of solar activity has fallen does not mean that the Sun is immune from large flares or even giant ones. Low average levels of activity may even promote the giant flares.
"Perhaps like earthquakes, when there are constant flares/tremors the energy is dissipated evenly over long periods of time. But in periods of quiet, that energy can build up and then suddenly be released in a giant event. This remains speculation, however."
if a proper "Carrington event" happens again, it has the potential to be far more problematic now than in 1859 when electric communication was barely in its infancy. Dr Clark says
sooner or later we should expect there to be another Carrington event and that is what these scientists [at NASA] are trying to prevent. Legislation in the US has just passed Congress to help harden the grid against solar flares."
So -- it's a real thing, and we should be concerned. But preventive measures can be taken -- satellites can be sent offline during big flares, power grids and communication networks can be shielded against electromagnetic radiation and so on. As Dr Bamford says: "The extreme events like the 1859 Carrington Event are 1-in-100-year probabilities, about the same probability as a storm of the level of Katrina hitting New Orleans -- and New Orleans did not build their defences to withstand the extreme-magnitude. The Katrina catastrophy is small compared to getting hit with solar flares.
NOAA Space W Dr Ruth Bamford, a plasma physicist at the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory, agrees: "The sun has been particularly quiet for the last few years in a protracted solar minimum. It has just woken up, as it were, and started its usual 11-year cycle a bit later than most."

Although it might have seemed like a good idea to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil — one of the most soccer-obsessed countries in the world — massive social unrest has taken the country by storm in the lead-up to the tournament.
The Brazilian government is spending an estimated $14 billion on this year's tournament, making it the most expensive World Cup to date. This has provoked outrage among Brazilians, many of whom view the government as corrupt, and are now seeing vast amounts of money being spent on soccer stadiums and police, while the country's endemic poverty and social issues are ignored.
This growing unrest led to violent anti-government protests breaking out in June of 2013, which have continued with increasing momentum in the lead-up to the World Cup. The Brazilian government has responded to these demonstrations by deploying massive numbers of police and military throughout the country in an attempt to suppress the masses. Despite this crackdown, major demonstrations continue to take place in cities across the country as international teams begin to arrive for the games.
VICE News traveled to Brazil to see how the country is preparing for one of the world's biggest international events, while simultaneously struggling to control a mounting civil uprising.

In the last year, nearly 50 Tibetans have died after setting themselves on fire in protest at Chinese rule and we have rare footage of what is happening there, but be warned this story contains disturbing images.

LEIGH SALES, PRESENTER: In the remotest regions of China, inhabited by the country's Tibetan minority, an appalling uprising is under way. In the past year more than 50 monks have died after setting themselves on fire to protest against government repression. Their uprising is mostly hidden from public view because journalists and TV cameras are usually barred from visiting either the Tibetan Autonomous Region or the neighbouring provinces. But China correspondent Stephen McDonell travelled undercover to western China to prepare this report. And a warning: this story contains images of self-immolation.
STEPHEN MCDONELL, REPORTER: In the remote Tibetan regions of western China, there is much that haven't changed for centuries. But behind these tranquil scene there's are simmering tensions. Some Tibetans are so disenchanted with Chinese rule that their protests are taking a shocking and extreme form.
After dousing themselves in flammable liquids, more than 50 people - mostly young monks - have set themselves on fire. In the last 12 months at least 42 have died. The Chinese government has been in damage control.
LIU WEIMIN, CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN (translated): We believe that the recent series of events have clearly been masterminded and stirred up by someone behind the scenes.
STEPHEN MCDONELL: The head of the Indian-based Tibetan government in exile was in Australia earlier this year.
LOBSANG SANGAY, TIBETAN PRIME MINISTER IN EXILE: The blame and solution lies with the Chinese government, and self-immolators have made it very clear. We want basic freedom like any human being, like any Australians.
STEPHEN MCDONELL: The Tibetan plateau is, for the most part, a no-go zone for foreign journalists. But we find a way to sneak into the area in Sichuan province which has seen the most number of suicides.
Winter is coming and here nomads are on the move. They've broken camp in the high mountains and are heading to lower altitudes to prepare for the cold. It can be a hard life dictated by the elements, but they breed them pretty tough in the Himalayas.
TIBETAN MAN (translated): What we are doing here is cutting grass for the yaks and sheep to eat in the winter time. This is still a very traditional Tibetan area.
STEPHEN MCDONELL (speaking Chinese, translated): So your father's father was doing this, and his father too?
TIBETAN MAN (translated): Yes, that's right.
STEPHEN MCDONELL: This young man is proud of his heritage, which he says the bound up in Buddhism.
TIBETAN MAN (translated): The most important thing in our lives is culture. It's in our work - everything. It comes from books so the monasteries are our most important source.
STEPHEN MCDONELL: But there's much that people will not talk about openly. It's very difficult to get away from the authorities in Tibetan areas. In villages like this there are eyes and ears everywhere, so even if we can make contact with ordinary people and if they know about the immolations they don't really want to talk about it, especially not on camera.
Yet if you spend enough time here, there are those who will speak. We find a monk in a small mountain house helping a poor family. He's certainly heard about his young brothers killing themselves nearby.
BUDDHIST MONK (translated): They feel unsettled in their hearts, that's why they set themselves on fire.
STEPHEN MCDONELL: A short distance from where we meet this monk is Aba. Footage secretly filmed inside this locked-down town shows it chocked full of military police and SWAT teams. The streets are barricaded as if in a war zone - something akin to Northern Ireland at the height of the Troubles.
Aba town alone counts for 24 self-immolations. It's hard to imagine the desperation that leads young Tibetans to protest by taking their lives in this most agonising way.
LOBSANG SANGAY: We have discouraged drastic actions, including self-immolations, but unfortunately Tibetans seem to be saying this is the only form of protest left, because any other form of protest the consequences is similar - you get arrested, tortured and often die.

On December 14, 2012, a young black high school student named Corey Stingley was aggressively restrained after he tried to shoplift alcohol from a neighborhood store. The Federal Reserve System has nothing to do with the "Federal" government. It is a secretive and private corporation owned by international banking interests who control our political system, economy and money. In short, since 1914 the U.S. Government ended being a government run by "we the people" and has been under the control of international bankers. The Council on Foreign Relations is run by the same people who run the Federal Reserve. Here we have two of the most powerful groups in America and the world and there is almost a complete media black-out on them. Both political parties are controlled by these groups and their agenda has been a one world economic system and a one world government for a long time. Although, they do not realize it they are a fulfillment of the ancient prophecies of Daniel when he predicted a Revived Roman Empire and the "Fourth Beast."
We are moving quickly to Revelation Chapter 13 which talks of a global government and a one world economic system along with a "mark of the beast." The majority of the Church in America and around the world in Western nations is the Laodecian Church which had lost its spiritual vision. The root cause for this is that especially the Church in America has been seduced into substituting the philosophies of men for the Word of God. We are far deeper into the great apostasy that the Apostle Paul warned us about in II Thessalonians than most people realize. False teachers and false prophets abound in our time, except they do not wear signs which say "false teacher" on them.

At his compound on the outskirts of Port of Spain, the man responsible for the only attempted militant Islamic overthrow of a Western government is smiling. "I've been charged with treason, I've been charged with sedition, with murder, conspiracy to murder, [stockpiling] guns...." Abu Bakr, the fiery 73-year-old leader of Jamaat al Muslimeen, rattles off the many accusations that the government of Trinidad and Tobago has leveled against him.
"Nothing has stuck, because it's fabricated," he continues. "They list all the charges in a book, and they just throw the book at me.... That's not prosecution, that's persecution!"
Bakr has mellowed a bit in his old age, but he still relishes the opportunity to serve as a thorn in the side of the government with whom he has clashed for decades. Depending on which local you ask, "The Jamaat" is either a jihadi group, a vast criminal organization, an invaluable community resource providing jobs and social services to Trinidad's disadvantaged, or a combination of all three.
But everyone agrees that the coup that Bakr led in 1990 — which held the state hostage for six days, unleashed widespread looting and chaos, and resulted in 24 deaths and the shooting of the prime minister — changed the country forever.

On December 5, 2013, in an attack that went largely underreported by the world's media, al Qaeda gunmen, dressed in government military uniform, casually slaughtered 52 innocent civilians in Sanaa, Yemen's capital. The Al-Oradi hospital sits within the same compound as the Yemeni ministry of defense, where al Qaeda alleged that drone strikes were directed from. Instead of targeting the ministry, however, the attackers killed the security guards manning the side gate of the hospital, then spent hours calmly stalking its corridors, shooting doctors, nurses, and even patients lying in their beds. In grim pictures captured by surveillance cameras, one gunman is seen approaching a group of terrified hospital staff. At first they don't flinch, and almost seem to be awaiting instructions, until the attacker reveals a hand grenade, pulls out the pin, and tosses it at them as if he were throwing a ball to a puppy.
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) usually avoids targeting civilians and even provides some form of governance in the small areas they control in Yemen. This goes some way to explaining why it enjoys some level of support in this war-torn country. But when this footage was aired on national TV, even AQAP supporters were horrified, and it was compelled to make an apology. In a video statement, its military leader, Qasim al-Raymi, acknowledged "our mistake and guilt," claiming that the nine attackers had been ordered not to enter the hospital. He continued: "We offer our apology and condolences to the victims' families. We accept full responsibility for what happened in the hospital and will pay blood money for the victims' families." Al-Raymi added: "We are continuing our jihad."

Although it might have seemed like a good idea to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil — one of the most soccer-obsessed countries in the world — massive social unrest has taken the country by storm in the lead-up to the tournament.The Brazilian government is spending an estimated $14 billion on this year's tournament, making it the most expensive World Cup to date.
This has provoked outrage among Brazilians, many of whom view the government as corrupt, and are now seeing vast amounts of money being spent on soccer stadiums and police, while the country's endemic poverty and social issues are ignored. This growing unrest led to violent anti-government protests breaking out in June of 2013, which have continued with increasing momentum in the lead-up to the World Cup. The Brazilian government has responded to these demonstrations by deploying massive numbers of police and military throughout the country in an attempt to suppress the masses. Despite this crackdown, major demonstrations continue to take place in cities across the country as international teams begin to arrive for the games.

2013 was a bad year for the Syrian rebels. While the mainstream rebels struggled to defend their frontlines from the resurgent Assad regime, a renegade al Qaeda offshoot, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), launched a series of assaults on the formerly-dominant FSA brigades from behind, capturing their strongholds in rebel-held northern Syria and executing their commanders. Now the rebels are fighting back.
A coalition of former FSA brigades, funded by Saudi Arabia and rebranded as the Syrian Revolutionaries Front (or SRF), launched a surprise offensive against ISIS in the spring of 2014, in a campaign supported by both the Saudi and US governments. VICE News was the first western TV crew into Northern Syria for 6 months, embedding with the SRF as they reimposed their rule over the country's northwestern Idlib province. What we witnessed was a brief window into a complex and morally ambiguous conflict with no end in sight.

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

After the al Shabaab terrorist organization claimed responsibility for the horrific attack on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, in September 2013, which left 67 dead, attention has focused on the neighborhood of Eastleigh. Also known as "Little Mogadishu," the Nairobi community is known for being the home to many Somali immigrants in Kenya — and is the nest of al Shabaab.

'US INTERROGATION TECHNIQUES NOT TORTURE' EX CIA LAWYER - BBC NEWSFormer CIA lawyer John Rizzo told Newsnight that "enhanced interrogation techniques", such as water boarding did not constitute torture. Talking to Gordon Corera he also said capturing and interrogating terrorists was a better method than killing people through drone strikes.
John Rizzo, who retired in 2009, was the CIA's chief legal officer for seven years.

Right-wing nationalists of the Identitarian Movement held a rally in Vienna on May 17. Organizing themselves across social media, members of factions across Europe flooded in from France, Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland to join the Austrian faction to demonstrate against the EU.
To combat the protest, an anti-fascist group known as Offense Against the Right also gathered in the Austrian capital. As crowds became increasingly angry, police moved in to arrest protesters and separate the two opposing factions. VICE News was there to witness the clash of Europe's new generation of extreme political movements.

Lockup is a prison documentary series, produced by 44 Blue Productions, which airs on MSNBC. The Lockup franchise also includes Lockup: Raw, Lockup: World Tour, Lockup: Extended Stay, Lockup: Special Investigation, and Life After Lockup.
Lockup (and the other series in the franchise) explore prison facilities throughout the United States, profiling notable inmates, incidents, and prison operations. A typical episode usually follows one or two inmates as they attend disciplinary hearings, receive visits from family, and interact with other inmates. In some episodes, inmates are provided with personal video cameras ("inmate cams") to use in their cells for recording their thoughts.
Titles within the franchise deal in specific areas as follows:
Raw - Previously unaired footage from visits to various prisons, interspersed with comments from the production crew
Extended Stay - Blocks of episodes that each focus on a long-term visit to one prison
World Tour - Visits to prisons in countries other than the United States
Special Investigation - Focus on a specific aspect of the prison system, usually the juvenile justice system
Life After Lockup - Inmates who have been released from prison and are trying to return to society
Most episodes end with a 'recap', explaining what happened to a given inmate (or, on occasion, a staff member) months or years after the taping; subsequent episodes will frequently return to a given prison (and/or a given inmate) to revisit them several months later.

In part two of this four-part series, VICE News went to one of the favelas surrounding Rio to see how the Brazilian government is cracking down on crime and drugs through a "pacification" program led by the military and police.
Although it might have seemed like a good idea to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil — one of the most soccer-obsessed countries in the world — massive social unrest has taken the country by storm in the lead-up to the tournament.The Brazilian government is spending an estimated $14 billion on this year's tournament, making it the most expensive World Cup to date.
This has provoked outrage among Brazilians, many of whom view the government as corrupt, and are now seeing vast amounts of money being spent on soccer stadiums and police, while the country's endemic poverty and social issues are ignored. This growing unrest led to violent anti-government protests breaking out in June of 2013, which have continued with increasing momentum in the lead-up to the World Cup. The Brazilian government has responded to these demonstrations by deploying massive numbers of police and military throughout the country in an attempt to suppress the masses. Despite this crackdown, major demonstrations continue to take place in cities across the country as international teams begin to arrive for the games.
