Mental obesity: David Ryan Polgar at TEDxSpringfieldAre we mentally obese? David Ryan Polgar, a writer (columnist and author of Wisdom in the Age of Twitter), attorney, and college professor explores this provocative question with an insightful and humorous food analogy. Arguing that it's not just our physical bodies that are increasingly become obese, Polgar proposes a Mental Food Plate to offer a simple, holistic solution.
Discussing the various ways that our modern culture and media consumption have altered our ability to have a diverse range of quality thoughts, Polgar advocates for a paradigm shift in how we view the topic. Similar to the diet and exercise industries that serve as a counterbalance to our overconsumption of food, he foresees our overconsumption of information leading to a massive growth in industries serving mental diet and exercise. Hot topics such as digital diets and distraction blocking software are just one part of the equation that also includes tools for mental assessment and brain exercise. The end goal is to create a daily mental intake that allows for more reflection and deeper levels of thought needed for innovation.
The theme of TEDxSpringfield's inaugural event held on October 18, 2013, was "Driving Innovation Through Diversity and Inclusion". We are a group of passionate volunteers that believe Springfield and its surrounding areas are full of Ideas Worth Spreading. Springfield is the "City of Firsts" -- the first basketball game, the first motorcycle, the first "Springfield". This event focused on how to use our diversity to bring back the innovation.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The GOOD 30-Day Challenge: Unplug at 8The rules for this month's challenge are simple: After 8 p.m. on weekdays, you get off the internet. No email, no blogging, you can't even read GOOD.is. If you use your computer like a TV for watching movies and shows, that's fine, but nothing else. Get away from your screens and talk to your families instead of your followers. Eat and enjoy your food instead of taking pictures of it for your Tumblr. Send a nice handwritten letter instead of an email. After 8 p.m. this month, simply remember what life was like before you sat in the flickering glow of a screen all day every day.

Technology can be addictive. In a tribute to Allen Ginsberg's classic 1956 poem, we created a short film lampooning the addictions of our generation. It's narrated by Peter Coyote.

Be More Present: Unplug!Learn more ways to live a happy, healthy life and return to balance at: www.return2balance.blogspot.com
We live in a time of amazing technology that can connect us instantly. Life is short though and living in this "instant response" mode just quickens the pace. Not to mention the energy-draining, time consuming devices that we spend so much time plugged into. Unplugging is one of the ways that I have been able to be more present. This technique has also helped me to have more energy and open more time in my life so that I can move beyond the daily grind and pursue things that move my life forward in a meaningful way.
I highly recommend:
Checking your messages, especially email, in the morning, afternoon and evening instead of continually throughout the day. You might actually find that this makes you more efficient and helps you better manage your time.
Unplug completely one day a week. I usually do this on a Saturday or Sunday. This practice has changed my life!

Unplug from Social Media: Lane Sutton at TEDxRedmondLane is a 16-year-old entrepreneur. Since age five, he's had a strong passion for technology, business, and entrepreneurship. He's grown up with technology integrated in his daily life. At age 11, he started KidCriticUSA, writing reviews by a kid, for kids and families that gave a tween view of products, movies, and more. He speaks regularly about social media, online privacy, entrepreneurship, marketing, and millennials to conferences, companies, professionals, colleges, and students. Digital is a second language for many members of Gen Z and beyond, so he brings a unique perspective both as a teen and someone who can offer a business or marketing point of view. When Lane started working with his first client back, he was eleven years old and she was just starting out on Twitter; today, he's helped her reach 7,500 followers within a special needs community, and he still works with her today. During the day, he can be found learning at high school and serving as Treasurer for his class.

Unplug YourselfSocial media is constantly telling us that we are inferior to other genders. That the way we look isn't okay. That we will never be good enough. By "unplugging ourselves" from the media we get to take a break from the social norms pushed on us everyday, and are given the chance to find our true selves.

IBM technology evangelist David Barnes champions boredom as a critical ingredient in fostering innovation. Trying to come up with the next big disruptive idea? Unplug for awhile.
-----
Serious innovation has evolved beyond continual improvement to transformational, often disruptive change. Linear thinking and cautious change is inconsistent with the demands of our hyper-competitive marketplace of ideas. IBM technology evangelist David Barnes talks about the dynamics of invention and game-changing innovation, including ways that IBM (with over 50,000 patents!) continues to meet this challenge. David will be joined by Heather Howell, Chief Tea Officer of Rooibee Red Tea, for a discussion of how innovation is embraced from both a large and small entrepreneurial company perspective.
Presented by the Kentucky Community and Technical College.
Much more than a conference, the IdeaFestival is a catalyst for high-speed innovation, product development, and creative endeavors. This series of events attracts leading thinkers and curious minds from across the nation and around the globe.
Unplug the Signal: The Truth Will Not Be Televisedhttp://www.unplugthesignal.com/
Nathan Janes, artist activist of PUPAGANDA, has announced the unveiling of a campaign to turn off televisions across the country. The artist is calling for an awakening of the people to the gross manipulation of reality that is broadcast by the six major corporations controlling the content of television. In an article accompanying his latest artwork on the subject, Janes addresses the use of television as a weapon of mass deception for the last half of a century. He recognizes the role of the television in managing society and culture through such techniques as perception management, predictive programming and crisis creation. Janes has declared Unplugging the Signal to be of urgent concern for the television remains our greatest threat to individual sovereignty and the largest obstacle to becoming a truly informed individual.
Patriots are urged to spread the message of the Unplug the Signal campaign by visiting http://pupaganda.com/originals/Unplug_the_signal.html where an info-card and images for use on posters, stickers, and other printed material can be found.

What Happens When You Unplug from the Internet For a YearPaul Miller, a writer for The Verge, decided to undertake a huge mission- unplug from the internet for an entire year. It may sound easy, but think about how connected you are- it's more than deactivating your facebook and staying away from online games- today, we do so much online, that actually functioning without it is doable, but time intensive.
What do you think of his mission? Miller admits that he didn't have the cathartic moment he thought he would; that he doesn't feel like a "better person. So, was the undertaking itself flawed? He mainly limited his ability to socialize, and therefore, isolated himself. Should he have unplugged from electronics too-- or would that not have achieved anything either?
