The Secret Life Of Machines - The Television Set (1988) The Secret Life Of Machines was a TV series made for Channel 4 (UK) and subsequently shown on the Discovery Channel. The series was written by Tim Hunkin, and presented by Tim Hunkin and Rex Garrod. Eighteen programmes were made in total.

The series developed from a cartoon strip, called 'The Rudiments Of Wisdom' which Tim researched and drew for the Observer newspaper for 14 years.

I've got people asking me if I watch TV. Yes I do. But, I understand what TV's function is in this society. I took two (2) Television Production courses. The latest I took was at Time Warner for QPTV Public Access Producers training back in 1995. I have a full understanding of how to produce and direct and broadcast a TV show. I also understand how to play tricks with your brain, how to subliminally seduce using a TV production. Now as far as sports is concerned, I love sports. I played high school basketball, college basketball, some summer league semi pro basketball back in the day, but I was primarily a street basketball player. I still watch Basketball, Football, NASCAR, Boxing, Olympics, etc on TV to this day even though I know some of the games are rigged. But again I understand the history of pro sports as Alan Watt explained in this video. As for the news, I watch it some times. Do I believe what I hear and see on the news? Some of it is true, some of it is total bull shit. It is all designed to control what information you are getting. Peace to all.

Thames TV lost the London ITV franchise after this film was broadcast. Death on the Rock was the title of a documentary in the current affairs series This Week, made by Thames Television and broadcast on the ITV network on 28 April 1988. The programme investigated the incident, on Sunday 6 March 1988, when three members of the IRA, sent to Gibraltar on an active service mission, were shot and killed by members of British special forces. The incident, and subsequently the programme about it, became controversial as a result of uncertainty and conflicting evidence about the manner in which the killing was carried out and the degree to which it was an "execution" with no attempted arrest. The programme interviewed witnesses who claimed to have heard no prior warning given by the SAS troops and to have seen the shooting as one carried out "in cold blood." Furthermore, the defence that the IRA team might, if allowed time, have had the capacity to trigger by remote control a car bomb in the main street, was also subject to criticism, including that from an Army bomb disposal expert.
Claiming that its transmission prior to the official inquest was an impediment to justice, the then foreign secretary, Sir Geoffrey Howe, attempted to stop the programme being broadcast by writing to the chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, Lord Thomson of Monifieth. Lord Thomson refused to prevent transmission noting that "the issues as we see them relate to free speech and free inquiry which underpin individual liberty in a democracy." Following transmission, there was some criticism of the programme's investigative stance in the press (e.g. "Storm at SAS Telly Trial" The Sun; "Fury over SAS 'Trial by TV'," Daily Mail; "TV Slur on the SAS," Daily Star). Subsequently, a number of papers, notably The Sunday Times and The Sun, attempted to show not only that the programme's procedures of inquiry were faulty but that the character of some of its witnesses was dubious (in one case, this latter charge resulted in a successful libel action being brought).
Such was the debate which developed around the programme, intensified by one of its witnesses subsequently repudiating his testimony in it, that an independent inquiry was conducted at the behest of Thames Television.

Television History John Logie Baird FREE (14 August 1888 -- 14 June 1946) was a Scottish scientist, engineer, innovator and inventor of the world's first television; the first publicly demonstrated colour television system; and the first purely electronic colour television picture tube.

Using a Nipkow disk, Scottish inventor John Logie Baird succeeded in demonstrating the transmission of moving silhouette images in London in 1925, and of moving, monochromatic images in 1926. Baird's scanning disk produced an image of 30 lines resolution, just enough to discern a human face, from a double spiral of Photographic lenses. This demonstration by Baird is generally agreed to be the world's first true demonstration of television.

Untitled Reality Television Thesis: A Documentary People have called it the modern freak show; they've compared it to the morbid curiosity of passing a car wreck; and other say it is just an affirmation that our lives are better than the people's we see on our screens. Regardless of the reason, reality television (more aptly termed: "non-fiction" programming) has captivated America. But "reality TV" is just that: it is TV. It abides by the same rules as everything else we watch, maintaining the four-wall convention seen in other types of programming. Once the "TV world" is created, producers are told not to "break" from this produced reality both physically (by erasing the production apparatus) and narratively (by abiding by the established "rules" of the series). But while this works for fiction programming (even on "unrealistic" science fiction series), reality television purports to represent the "real" (or "corporeal") world, which cannot be divorced from the reality created on screen. As a result, the fourth wall in reality television is harder to maintain throughout the entire run of a series. Over the last thirteen years, we see the concept of the fourth wall evolving once we begin bringing cast members back for multiple seasons of the same series. But how and when did we decide that these "ordinary" people should get more than "fifteen minutes of fame" without any recognizable talent? Why were these "ordinary celebrities" legitimized as such in the eyes of the public? And, what are the ramifications of this in our own society that now gives anyone with access to the internet the chance at achieving fame? With the walls between "ordinary" and "celebrity" constantly being blurred, it is no wonder that we see the same thing occurring on the series that purport to represent this "real world."

They say that TV is garbage -- and they want to turn that shit into gold. So they create live remixes of broadcasts using pure information to filter and direct the look and feel of their videos: deconstructing the 2008 presidential debates by using word-count as an aesthetic variable, for example. "Essentially what we're trying to do is like take the television studio and turn up the acid," Rothenberg says.

A television crew from Ireland's Radio Telifís Éireann happened to be recording a documentary about Chávez during the events of April 11, 2002. Shifting focus, they followed the events as they occurred. During their filming, the crew recorded images of the events that contradict explanations given by Chávez's opposition, the private media, the US State Department, and then White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer. The coup was the result of a conspiracy between various old guard and anti-Chávez factions within Venezuela and the United States.

Television Documentary on Appan Samachar by | ARD first German TV | A community news programme run by village women in the northern Indian state of Bihar.Appan Samachar (Our News), as the programme is aptly called, has become popular in over a dozen villages in Muzaffarpur district. The programme is shown once a fortnight. Sometimes it is shown on a projector, other times on hired video players and a large TV set. The centre of operations is a gloomy room at the remote Ramlila Gachi village on the crime-ridden banks of the Gandak river. The asbestos roofed room has one table, two chairs, an old portable television and lots of wires on the floor. Next door is a village 'clinic' manned by a doctor who claims to treat both humans and animals. The village has had no electricity for the last four years, and has never had cable television and land phones. Cell phone network reached Ramlila Gachi just a year ago. The nearest hospital is 62km away, and the nearest police station is 20km away. Villagers stock illegal firearms at home to defend themselves against the marauding dacoits and kidnappers. In this bleak lawless boondocks of one of India's poorest states, three young girls and a newly-wed woman cycle around to gather news for their programme. Carrying a low range Sony Handycam, a tripod and a microphone with the channel logo, they bump along on the dusty narrow village tracks to talk to people and shoot their stories. The first edition of this fortnightly news programme was broadcast on a projector and featured such issues as witchcraft, empowerment of women, poverty and farm problems.For their second edition, Appan Samachar chose to do stories on education for the girl child. The villagers are excited with the prospect of their faces being displayed and voices heard by one and all in the area.

The TV airwaves were hijacked in order to insert false images into everyone's television set. Ephemera: Archaeology on Television Ephemera, made in 2004 by Sean Caveille, is a short film about the popularity of archaeology/history programmes on TV. At the time, new quick-paced series like Extreme Archaeology (Channel 4) and Hidden Treasure (BBC 2) were desperately trying to capture new viewers by turning archaeology into that most dreaded of adjectives - 'sexy'. Four years later and the BBC are trying to do the same thing again with Bonekickers...

Ephemera has a distinctive visual style which is achieved through placing the importance back upon the archaeology itself: once the interviews were filmed and edited, they were video-projected onto prehistoric West Kennet long barrow and re-filmed. The youth believe that they can learn different languages, facts, information, and more from channels like National Geography, Discovery, etc. and also find TV as way to calm and comfort themselves.

The filmmakers hope to encourage the audience to make good use of television.

technology at the workplace we showed previously (see #184," brings with him an insightful documentary which he made showing the nature and extent of racism on English television, using clips from documentaries, panel discussions, interviews and entertainment programs. The program, which was shown on the BBC's public access hour, created a furor, resulting in threats of lawsuits, an unusual disclaimer by the BBC and attempts by the
BBC to prevent further public showings of the program.
