Holly Near shares the touching story behind her famous song "Singing For Our Lives" and explains how it turned into an anthem for the LGBTQ movement. The song was written after she heard news of the assassination of city supervisor Harvey Milk, a champion of homosexual rights.
Directed by four-time Emmy Award-winner Jim Brown (American Masters — The Highwaymen: Friends Til The End, American Masters – Pete Seeger: The Power of Song), the documentary premieres nationwide Friday, March 1 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) in honor of Women’s History Month and will be available to stream the following day via pbs.org/americanmasters and PBS apps.

Invalidate Prop 8 - SF Gay Men's Chorus "Singing For Our Lives"The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus (a group I proudly belong to) at the Eve of Justice candlelight rally and march on March 4th, the evening before the CA Supreme Court heard the court case to invalidate Prop 8 that was passed in California on November 4, 2008. The SF Gay Men's Chorus performed the song "Singing For Our Lives" which was written by Holly Near. This performance was arranged by Jane Schonveld.

On Saturday, June 18, 2016, CHARIS, the St. Louis Women's Chorus performed Artistic Director Jeremiah Selvey's arrangement of Holly Near's "Singing for Our Lives" in St. Louis as guests on the Gateway Men's Chorus concert. This piece was sung at the memorial service of Harvey Milk, and we dedicated that night's performance to Orlando. The final verse was sung by everyone in the room--including those on stage and those in the audience. "We are ALL in this together, and we are singing for our lives!"
