Edible, Biodegradable Food Packaging - Headline ScienceMost foods come wrapped in plastic packaging. This type of packaging creates a lot of waste and aren't that great at preventing spoilage. Researchers are now developing a biodegradable film made from milk proteins to hopefully solve these problems.

In this experiment sunlight and sand are used as raw energy and material to produce glass objects using a 3D printing process, that combines natural energy and material with high-tech production technology.
Solar-sintering aims to raise questions about the future of manufacturing and triggers dreams of the full utilisation of the production potential of the world's most efficient energy resource - the sun. Whilst not providing definitive answers, this experiment aims to provide a point of departure for fresh thinking.

China's Ionic Smog-Sucking Vacuum: UpgradeChina is in the midst of a massive industrial and economic revolution which has required large expenditures of energy.
Although it is one of the world's leaders in green energy ventures, most of China's energy comes in the form of coal. We all know fossil fuels come with a hefty environmental price and they have definitely left China's mega cities with a gnarly air pollution problem.
In Beijing, the majority of the factories are located right on the outskirts of the city, often laying a blanket of thick grey smog in the air. This smog which contains a class of particle known as PM 2.5 amongst other terrible things, and has lead to spikes in pulmonary diseases and other health issues among Beijingers.
In this episode of Upgrade, we head to the Netherlands to talk to Daan Roosegaarde, an artist who focuses on social design projects aimed at stirring up conversation. His latest project involves a giant ionic smog crushing vacuum that he wants to put in a park in Beijing so it's citizens can enjoy clean air.

Is This the Future of Alternative Wind Energy?The makers of Buoyant Airborne Turbine (BAT) think they've got the next step in alternative wind energy, without the large grounded turbines. The BAT is a high-altitude mobile wind-powered generator, that's able to convert the more powerful wind currents into a substantial amount of electricity. It can also hoist cellular transmitters and meteroological equipment.

How the oceans can clean themselves: Boyan Slat at TEDxDelftBoyan Slat (@BoyanSlat, Delft, 1994) combines environmentalism, creativity and technology to tackle global issues of sustainability. Currently working on oceanic plastic pollution, he believes current prevention measures will have to be supplemented by active removal of plastics in order to succeed. With his concept called Marine Litter Extraction, Boyan Slat proposes a radical clean-up solution, for which he won the Best Technical Design award 2012 at the TU Delft.
Where millions of tons of plastic kill ocean life and poison food chains, Boyan sees opportunities to combat this. While researching ocean plastics during school holidays, he performed analysis on various fundamental topics (including particle sizes, plastic/plankton separation and the amount of plastic in the oceans), leading up to the first realistic concept for cleaning up the world's oceans.
Now a first-year Aerospace Engineering student at the TU Delft, Boyan has always been passionate about applying technology in an original way (at age fourteen he set a world record with launching 213 water rockets), and as an (underwater)photographer and videographer witnesses environmental degradation through his very own eyes.

Deep Sea Fish Farming in Geodesic Domes: UpgradeIn this episode of Upgrade, Motherboard goes to Baja California, Mexico to get a firsthand look at these free floating pods, and to get an understanding for why we need better ways to cultivate our future food sources.
Whether it’s found on a plate of sushi, grilled in our backyard, or thrown on pasta, seafood is a staple for many diets around the world, and demand is growing. And as the commercial seafood industry booms, fish stocks worldwide face perilous declines.
We’ve surpassed our capacity to sustainably fish wild caught fish, shrimp, and mollusks from the ocean, and so we’ve turned to aquaculture, or fish farming, as a strategy to meet demand for our growing appetites for water-borne critters. The aquaculture industry is growing fast. According to the FAO, per capita production of seafood from aquaculture has increased 6.9 percent annually since 1970.
Unfortunately for us and for our Earth, current methods of fish farming often involve crowded, tethered pens, which can have poor water circulation and contribute to the spread of disease, and put large amounts of environmental stress on the surrounding waterways.
This is where Steve Page of Ocean Farm Technologies comes in. Taking inspiration from naturally-occurring schools of fish and Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes, Page co-designed the Aquapod, a free floating, untethered deep ocean fish habitat which reduces overcrowding, and creates less stress on surrounding environments due to its unique ability to change location with the ocean's current.
