TEDxSeattle - Amanda Koster - 04/16/10In Steve Bikos Backyard -
Amanda Koster is an internationally acclaimed photographer who combines her anthropology background with media skills to create projects about human rights, cultural diversity and global equality. She has received numerous awards and grants for these projects around the world.
She is the founder of SalaamGarage and organization which connects citizen journalists with international NGOs and local non-profits. She created SalaamGarage for a few reasons 1) many asked Can I Come With You [on her international projects] 2) wondered what would happen if tourists visited an NGO and added that to their photo album 3) wondered what would happen if people plugged intentional, powerful content into their social media sites.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Love Your Neighbor... Really: Amanda Koster at TEDxSanLuisObispoAmanda Koster shares her experience growing up in foster care and challenges the audience to reach out to those who are aging out of the foster care system. An internationally acclaimed photographer with a passion for finding and sharing stories of real people, human rights, cultural diversity and global equality, Amanda is the founder of SalaamGarage (http://salaamgarage.com/), a humanitarian media organization that partners with non-profits around the world to create storytelling for social change. Recently, Amanda and her SalaamGarage team have redirected the focus of their work to SalaamGarageLocal (SGL) an all-volunteer media team that focuses on storytelling projects about the injustices in our own, local communities. The first two chapters are in NYC and Seattle. Professional photographers, writers, journalists, and videographers use their storytelling skills to take a hard look at what happens to youth when they age-out of the foster care system and raise awareness about what they find. When she was 13 Mitch Zeman, her church pastor started asking questions about what was going on at home. Once she opened up and shared her story, he swiftly intervened and found her a safe place to live for the rest of high school. She knows first hand how storytelling can transform lives. As a former 'unofficial' foster kid herself, this project really hits home for Amanda. You can follow Amanda on Twitter at @AmandaKoster or find out more about her "Teach One Thing" initiative on Facebook.

A very simple act of grace, a few hours on the computer and pow, massive impact. SalaamGarage: thousands of dollars spent, thousands of miles traveled, pro gear and award winning media makers with social media at their fingertips capturing stories of people in dire need. Where is the impact? What's wrong with this company? SalaamGarage, several years later.

Complete lecture: Amanda Koster, "No More Drive-Bys", May 2011, Bellevue CollegeAmanda Koster, nationally-acclaimed photographer, photojournalist and author speaking recently in a lecture at Bellevue College. She talks about her approach to socially-responsible photography, describes her experience with Doctors Without Borders, her project SalaamGarage, and leaves a generous segment at the end for discussion.
Amanda Koster's lecture, No More Drive-By's, reminds photographers how we really have the chance to change people's lives when interacting with them as a subject for photography. How many times do photographers shoot a subject and keep going -- not bothering to find out what was going on in the life of that person. And yet a photographer has much more leverage to explore people's lives and reveal their personal histories.
Great lecture! Many thanks to photography instructors Ginny Banks and Chad White for bringing Amanda Koster to Bellevue College.
