Rodney Brooks in Conversation with Nick Thompson | SXSW Interactive 2016Rodney Brooks, the chairman of Rethink Robotics and the former director of the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, and Nicholas Thompson, editor of newyorker.com, examine the current state of robotics and A.I. They will cover the problems that robots can and can’t solve and the future effect that robots will have on our economy and our personal lives. They’ll also tackle concerns about the dangers of artificial intelligence, and the ways that robots and A.I. could change the nature of warfare. Dr. Brooks will describe his decades of research into this field and his suggestions for policies that will best help humanity handle the changes that advances in robotics are bringing about.

Accessing the Inaccessible: Evolving Search | SXSW Interactive 2016Not so long ago, when you needed an answer, you turned to people—you called them, you met in person, you asked around. In twenty short years, search engines have become the first stop. Humanity has taken a backseat to algorithms. Search is taken for granted. There’s been iteration and operational improvements, but there has not been a significant challenge to the established pattern of seeking information—there has not been a fundamentally new approach in two decades. Join Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter, Medium, and Jelly) and Danny Sullivan (author, founder of Search Engine Land) as they challenge established patterns, networks, and unlock the value of combining humanity with technology.

Elephant in the Valley | SXSW Interactive 2016Gender bias has become one of the most important discussions and movements within the tech industry. Michele Madansky and Trae Vassallo are two of the authors of the recently-released “Elephant in the Valley” report that provides strong data documenting the workplace challenges in the tech industry. This study was inspired by the impactful conversation that came out of the Ellen Pao / Kleiner Perkins trial from March 2015: “What we realized is that while many women shared similar workplace stories, most men were simply shocked and unaware of the issues facing women in the workplace.”
Madansky and Vassallo will discuss the “Elephant in the Valley” survey, the reaction they have encountered since its release, as well as solutions they think the tech industry can embrace to improve upon the many problems exposed in this report.

Iris Bohnet | What Works: Gender Equality by Design | SXSW Interactive 2016Gender equality is a moral and a business imperative. But unconscious bias holds us back, and debiasing people’s minds has proven to be difficult and expensive. In an effort to make workplaces more effective and inclusive, companies have tried special training programs and a score of other techniques to change the way employees think. Behavioral design offers a new solution. By de-biasing organizations instead of individuals, we can make smart changes that have big impacts. Building on new insights into the human mind, Bohnet draws on data from companies, universities, and governments, often from randomized controlled trials, and offers evidence-based interventions. Presenting research-based solutions from her new book, What Works, Iris Bohnet shares the tools we need to move the needle in classrooms and boardrooms, in hiring and promotion, benefiting businesses, governments, and the lives of millions. More can be done—often at shockingly low cost and surprisingly high speed.

Dirk Ahlborn | Crowdsourcing the Hyperloop | SXSW Interactive 2016Hyperloop Transportation Technologies CEO Dirk Ahlborn will discuss Hyperloop as both a completely new transportation system and the revolutionary use of crowdsourcing to create an entirely new model for how companies can be made. In August 2013, Elon Musk published the original Hyperloop Alpha white paper detailing a new mode of transportation: a passenger capsule levitating in a tube that travels at 760 MPH. Musk asked other entrepreneurs to take on the project and JumpStartFund, a new crowdsourcing platform, took the project on with 100 engineers, becoming the first Hyperloop company, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Inc. (HTT) in November 2013. Today, HTT has more than 500 team members, including Fortune 500 companies, working worldwide to build the first full scale passenger-ready Hyperloop along a five mile stretch of the I-5 Freeway in California’s Central Valley. What does it takes to build a new mode of transportation? How will the Hyperloop change the way we live?

Creating the Modern Media Company | SXSW Interactive 2016When Apple released their infamous 1984 commercial during the Super Bowl, it in many ways encapsulated the media landscape at that time: to market a brand was to place a splashy 30 second TV buy. Over a decade ago, Facebook was born and, building on the momentum of platforms like MySpace, transformed how we discover and share the things that entertain us and are important in our lives. Every generation has their own set of brands that define the medium on which they were built: radio brands, magazine brands, TV brands, and now digital media brands.
Jim Bankoff, the Chairman and CEO of Vox Media, has built a business around redefining what it means to be a successful modern media brand by combining the smartest digital voices—such as Ezra Klein, Kara Swisher, and Nilay Patel—with advanced technology and data solutions that power the eight media brands in the Vox Media portfolio. Today, Vox Media connects with an audience of 170 million affluent and educated young adults globally. In this discussion, Bankoff explores how Vox Media has become one of the fastest growing media companies of today and what the short, mid, and long term view of the digital media landscape looks like for publishers and brands alike.

Douglas Rushkoff | Distributed: A New OS for the Digital Economy | SXSW Interactive 2016Digital tech was supposed to usher in an age of prosperity, but so far it has put industrial capitalism on steroids. Social networks surrender their missions to data mining, and banks abandon investing for algorithms- all to stoke growth. Startups sell for billions but destroy more jobs and markets than they create.
In this launch event for his new book Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus, Rushkoff will share a new economic program using the unique distributive power of the internet to break free of the winner-take-all game defining business today. He will offer a series of practical steps to remake the economy from the inside out. Followed by book signing.

Frank Cooper | The Future of Media Companies | SXSW Interactive 2016Two critical paths have emerged to reach a large-scale audience: pop culture superstars and giant brands, fueled by mass marketing OR an equally (if not more) powerful audience built without the trappings of fame, traditional "talent," marketing–muscle, and traditional media.
While there is still a place for the classic broadcast, celebrity–driven approach, the mobile, social web has become the place where the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, the experiment becomes the standard, and the outliers become the agenda-setting influencers. While technology has created the potential for this shift, the primary driver of building this type of audience in today’s environment is human connection – simple connections between fans, friends and cultural groups.

It’s Not About an iPhone: Fixing the Encryption Mess | SXSW Interactive 2016The relationship between the government, tech, and corporations was broken well before the iPhone encryption fight. Working within a legal framework designed for telcos in the 20th century, the government has had to improvise in ways that antagonized its potential partners in the tech and corporate world.
We NEED this relationship to be fixed in a way that both allows the government to protect us, while also protecting our privacy, and keeping corporations safe from potential hackers. This means passing new laws, changing current government practices, and building trust across the spectrum.
In this session we’ll hear from Obama camapign and admin advisor Michael Slaby, IBM’s global threat head Charles Henderson, and corporate security expert Misha Govshteyn on how we got here and what it will take to fix this mess.

Kevin Kelly | 12 Inevitable Tech Forces That Will Shape Our Future | SXSW Interactive 2016In a few years we’ll have artificial intelligence that can accomplish professional human tasks. There is nothing we can do to stop this. In addition our lives will be totally 100% tracked by ourselves and others. This too is inevitable. Indeed much of what will happen in the next 30 years is inevitable, driven by technological trends which are already in motion, and are impossible to halt without halting civilization. Some of what is coming may seem scary, like ubiquitous tracking, or robots replacing humans. Others innovations seem more desirable, such as an on-demand economy, and virtual reality in the home. And some that is coming like network crime and anonymous hacking will be society’s new scourges. Yet both the desirable good and the undesirable bad of these emerging technologies all obey the same formation principles.

In the six years of Google’s project, its vehicles have self-driven over 1.3 million miles, racking up the equivalent of 90 years of human driving experience. Google says its cars can now handle the vast majority of everyday situations it finds on the roads, but what does the path to a driverless future look like? How could it be that self-driving cars be both three and 30 years away?
Urmson shares his stories from the front lines of building the world's first fully self-driving cars.

Opening Keynote: Casey Gerald | SXSW Interactive 2016“So there we were, staring at each other thru misty eyes as we watched our baby, our dream, our idea die before it even had a chance to live. But just before we pulled the plug…we decided to join the long procession of young kids, with crazy ideas who were told by some authority that they couldn’t do what they wanted. We said fuck it. We’ll do it anyway.”
And with that Casey Gerald became the co-founder and CEO of MBAs Across America, a national movement of MBAs and entrepreneurs working together to revitalize America. A native Texan, Gerald received an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a BA in Political Science from Yale College, where he was a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. Named one of the “Most Creative People in Business” by Fast Company he has emerged as an influential voice on the awakening that is changing business and society — making purpose the new bottom line in our lives and work.
Gerald began his career in economic policy and government innovation at the Center for American Progress, and has worked as a strategist with startup social ventures such as The Future Project, as well as companies like The Neiman Marcus Group. He serves on the advisory boards of the Aspen Institute’s Franklin Project and NPR’s Generation Listen while also being featured on MSNBC, in the New York Times, Financial Times and The Guardian.
His Harvard Business School commencement speech hit a nerve online and began a larger conversation around his ideas and work. Gerald argues that there is a new playbook for change. That doing good over doing well will wake a dying world from it’s slumber and bring about a recalibration driven by creativity and the people who practice it. In short, it's time to give a damn. Join us Friday March 11 for Casey Gerald's Opening Keynote and leave inspired to change your world.

SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or interactive technologies.

Whats Buzzing at SXSW 2016? | SXSW Interactive 2016What has been buzzing and what are the most innovative products at this year's SXSW Interactive Festival? Conversely, what did we expect would be big hits in March in Austin -- and the pre-event hype just didn't match what was delivered on-site? Additionally, the last portion of the session will allow attendees to ask questions -- and offer feedback on how SXSW can continue to improve in 2017.

To realize a robot society, the speaker has developed various types of interactive robots and androids. Geminoid, a tele-operated android of an existing person can transmit the presence of the operator to the distant place. However, the geminoid is not the ideal medium for everybody. People enjoy talking to Telenoids.
In this talk, the speaker discusses the design principles for the robots and their effects on conversations with humans.
