Using Social Media to Predict Gun Violence | SXSW Convergence 2016Gun-related violence in the U.S. is a public health crisis, with nearly 100,000 people injured or killed each year. Despite the critical need for timely data on gun violence, laws and regulations often prohibit comprehensive data collection. The emergence of non-traditional data sources –online news, Google, and Twitter– has already been used to track a wide range of public health phenomena, such as the spread of influenza, and now has the potential to track gun usage and opinions. This session will demonstrate and discuss a brand new publicly-accessible interactive platform that provides real-time information and forecasts, on gun ownership and gun violence in searchable geographic areas.

LEGO Group & Cartoon Network, Building Future Fans | SXSW Convergence 2016Over the last several years, two of the most creative names in the kids space, LEGO Group and Cartoon Network, have found themselves naturally drawn together to partner on new ways of telling stories to their shared audience. Making Virtual Reality Golf | SXSW Convergence 2016With picturesque venues that change every week, an abundance of data, and individuals competing, professional golf is uniquely positioned among sports for virtual reality. Diversity in Tech: Building Inclusivity | SXSW Convergence 2016Maxine Williams, Global Director of Diversity for Facebook, has been behind industry-defining changes regarding diversity in tech, including Facebook’s public roll out of a Managing Bias training course, piloting of the company’s “diverse slate approach” (akin to the NFL’s “Rooney Rule), and the launch of TechPrep, a resource hub for Blacks, Latinos and their parents and guardians.
