My name is Pamela Garber and I’m in private practice. I have a Psychotherapy practice in mid-town Manhattan. I’m pretty eclectic in my practice seeing people mostly in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s feeling depression and anxiety and actually dealing with a lot of work issues and stress also combined with lack of social support.
Ciaran Connolly:
Wow. Excellent and of course our focus is on anti-bullying and bullying. Do you mind if I ask you: do you think bullying is a big issue today as it was in the past or has it improved that our thing is changing?
Pamela Garber:
You know on the one hand, it’s hard to say because as far as the volume because things are so much more talked about now. It’s possible that it existed along the same line in the same levels in the past but things just communicated much more rapidly and thoroughly now so it’s just on the forefront in that level. I do think though that the intensity of it has definitely increased, whether the volume of it has or not independent of that, the level of bullying and the stakes are much higher and the level much more intense.

Excellent and do you see a difference in how it happens today? Of course, now we have social media and smart phones and so much technology?
Pamela Garber:
Definitely. The other thing is, with all of that I see that it happens in venues where you wouldn’t expect it. It would be one thing for bullying to take place on a social level outside of work but now it’s become the norm for office politics and it has taken place with people at the level where it’s not age appropriate. They are behaving like reality TV character in places where you wouldn’t expect this to be the norm from government to corporations.

Managing Workplace StressStress is a problem for all managers. Typically staff suffering stress go to their general practitioner (doctor) and are signed off from work for four weeks. This removes the stressors. But when the person returns, the stressors are still present and the stress is experienced again.
What's needed is an integrated model of stress and a method of applying that model such that managers can understand stress and understand how to manage it before it costs them dear.

Welcome to this presentation of 8 ways to manage stress to help prevent and manage depression.
Stress has both direct and indirect effects that can lead to depression. Directly, stress leads to irritability, sleep disruption, and cognitive changes. Indirectly, stress disrupts a person's normal coping mechanisms, relationships, routines, and can lead to unhealthy coping. All of these things can lead to depression, but you can take action to prevent it.
It is very important to understand your own stress responses. This means being mindful and keeping a journal of what situations, or life struggles lead you to become stressed, so that you can tailor your life accordingly and avoid or make a plan to manage these pitfalls.
Make sure to exercise, get plenty of fresh air, and take advantage of mind-body exercises such as yoga and tai chi, which are incredibly effective in calming the mind and reducing stress. Regular meditation is also one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and may prevent depression.
Many people neglect to schedule time to relax when planning their daily lives. To help you deal with the negative stressors in your life, it is important to be conscious of and make a deliberate effort to schedule relaxation time that promotes mental health and reduces stress.
Plan your day to include something that gives you pleasure because having something to look forward to is very helpful in getting through tasks that are not so pleasant or are causes of stress.
Think positive, and reward yourself when you are successful and try not to dwell on failures. Accept that everyone, including you, has limits and cannot succeed at everything. Instead of allowing your mind to be consumed by the things you struggle with, focus on the things you do well.
When people are trying to put more stress on you, assert yourself in a positive, non-threatening way. Recognize that accepting the demands people try to place on you is a matter of choice, and you don’t need to take on everyone’s stress as your own.
Over commitment is one of the most significant causes of stress, learning to say no, understanding and setting your boundaries and making yourself a priority can avoid burnout.
Getting daily hugs, finding something to laugh about, and practicing gratitude, have all been found to be beneficial in maintaining a positive outlook, staying happy, reducing stress, and preventing depression.

2. Schedule Smart like smart person. Management is based on your smartness.
3. Keep discussions with your family, friends and business partners about your thoughts and issues. Listen, don't repeat one topic again and again. Brainstorm it yourself.
4. Send Nonverbal Cues.
5. Control your time.
6. Don't Over supervise.
7. Assert your needs.

So be it a 40 minutes of brisk walking, yoga , aerobics or some laps in the pool you will find that you have forgotten the day's irritation and concentrating on your body. The results are - energy, optimism, calm mind and fit body.
2. Connect with people
A problem shared is a problem halved. A good support network of colleagues, friends and family can ease your work troubles and help you see in a different way. If you don't connect with people, you won't have support to turn to when you need help. The activities we do with friends help us relax and we often have a good laugh with them., which is an excellent stress reliever And may be your friends or collegues can also help you out with some solutions to your problems.
3. Avoid unhealthy habits
Don't rely on alcohol, smoking and caffeine as your ways of coping. This will not help you to relieve any stress in fact it will create new problems. It might provide temporary relief but it won't make the problems disappear. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy small nutritious means. Hunger and dehydration provokes anxiety and stress. So stay fit and healthy.
4. BE positive
Look for positives in life and things for which you are grateful. Write down three things at the end of everyday which went well and for which you are grateful. People don't always appreciate what they have. They always tend to crib and complain about everything. Make a conscious effort to train yourself to be more positive about life. Change your perspective and you will be able to see your situation from a more positive point of view.
5. Plan something Rewarding at the end of your stressful day
Rewards like taking a hot water bath or half an hour of reading a good book or even watching your favorite T.V show helps. So basically I am talking about some me time. Put aside work , housekeeping and family concerns for brief period before bed time. Don't spend this time planning for the next day or doing house chores. Remember you need time to recharge and energize yourself. You will be much prepared to face the next day.

Up to a point, stress is an unavoidable part of living. It has become more problematic as our modern world becomes more complex and frantic. To fail to acknowledge your role in creating the stress in your life will simply amplify it. Review what choices you've made, and whether you want to retract any of them for the sake of reducing your stress exposure. Stress tends to be reduced once we simply accept our choice to live with the stress-inducing situation, rather than pursue some alternative action.
Positive, constructive ways to deal with stress include most notably meditation, sports, music, reading, and creative hobbies. Self-destructive, unhealthy methods for dealing with stress are easy to identify. Even innocuous-looking methods of stress relief can become a crutch that steals your quality of life and creates guilt and recrimination. Less obviously destructive diversions such as video games, the internet, and TV create a low consciousness that disengages you from your mission in life.
Proactively exam what is causing the greatest stress in your life. If you choose to "just live with it," identify positive ways to mitigate that stress. Evaluate what negative stress reducing technique to eliminate to improve the quality of your life.
