There is a place on Earth that we have never seen. It is a place of unimaginable heat and pressure, where no life could survive. Yet without it, we would perish for it holds the key to our precarious existence on this planet.
2000 miles below the Earth's surface, there is a vast ocean of molten iron. The spinning outer core of the Earth generates a protective magnetic shield around the planet, defending life from lethal space radiation. But now there is startling data that it could be about to stop defending us. Naked Science is taking you on a journey to the centre of the Earth.

A disaster is looming. A fabulous city, rich in culture, and technological advances, is about to be destroyed. Buildings, people, an entire civilisation, swept away by an overwhelming natural disaster. The legend has entranced scientists and scholars for centuries.
In this episode Naked Science goes in search of the most enduring myth of all - The City of Atlantis - lost beneath the waves to a massive natural cataclysm some 11,000 years ago. We know very little of Atlantis, in fact were it not for the writings of the Greek philosopher Plato we might not have encountered it at all. Plato, recounting a story he heard as a child, described a huge metropolis, rich in fine art, architecture and culture. The city was destroyed in the space of a day and a night, sunk beneath the waves for eternity by a massive natural cataclysm. For thousands of years the tale remained an obscure yet tantalising fable until an American by the name of Ignatius Donnelly reignited the idea, bringing it to worldwide attention and sending archaeologists and trophy hunters alike across the globe in its wake.
Naked Science - Super Volcanoes2004 Documentary - Naked Science Season 1 - Super Volcanoes
Naked Science is an American documentary television series that premiered in 2004 on the National Geographic Channel. The programme features various subjects related to science and technology.
Yellowstone, Wyoming. In spring 2003, strange things began happening in America's most famous national park. The tallest geyser in the world, which can go 50 years without erupting, burst into life. Spraying columns of superheated water, 100s of feet into the air. There were new cracks in the ground, the ground heated up to the point where the National Park Service had to close some trails. Not long after, a group of bison collapsed and died, victims of poisonous fumes from below the ground. Satellite pictures revealed that something ominous was happening beneath the earth. On the internet, unfounded rumours spread that a super volcano, an eruption so large, that it only occurs on average every 700,000 years, was about to blow. These things happen, you can look at the earth and see the scars. They happen, and they're going to happen again.
A million times more powerful than Hiroshima, super volcanoes are real events. Over 20 have been recorded in the history of the earth and over half of these happened in the USA. For the last 30 years scientists have been investigating where the next super volcano could erupt. Their research has revealed that an active super volcano exists under Yellowstone National Park. Naked Science follows these scientists and investigates the vital question, if the Yellowstone Caldera erupted today, could we survive? This documentary includes a Yellowstone timeline of past eruptions, how Yellowstone would affect the world, and what impact will it be for the United States.
Theory of DNA Science - MESSAGE FROM GODTheory of DNA Science - The code from GOD
http://www.advexon.com
What is DNA?
DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. Nearly every cell in a person's body has the same DNA. Most DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA).
The information in DNA is stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). Human DNA consists of about 3 billion bases, and more than 99 percent of those bases are the same in all people. The order, or sequence, of these bases determines the information available for building and maintaining an organism, similar to the way in which letters of the alphabet appear in a certain order to form words and sentences.
DNA bases pair up with each other, A with T and C with G, to form units called base pairs. Each base is also attached to a sugar molecule and a phosphate molecule. Together, a base, sugar, and phosphate are called a nucleotide. Nucleotides are arranged in two long strands that form a spiral called a double helix. The structure of the double helix is somewhat like a ladder, with the base pairs forming the ladder's rungs and the sugar and phosphate molecules forming the vertical sidepieces of the ladder.
An important property of DNA is that it can replicate, or make copies of itself. Each strand of DNA in the double helix can serve as a pattern for duplicating the sequence of bases. This is critical when cells divide because each new cell needs to have an exact copy of the DNA present in the old cell.

Just for a moment, imagine, a universe awash with life, where we humans are not the only intelligent beings around. What might these alien races look like? Could we communicate with them, or even recognise them as intelligent? And what would they make of our violent and dangerous species? Might they take one look, and decide not to bother with such primitive beings? A planetary nursery filled with spiteful, galactic infants. On the other hand, in our imaginary scenario, they may enrich us with scientific knowledge beyond our imagination. Or could an encounter with aliens have a more destructive outcome? It could be a bad day for human kind. But relax, it's just make believe, it could never happen, could it?
A mysterious crash in Roswell, New Mexico during the 1940s convinced many that our planet is being visited by space aliens. Crop circles in Britain have only added fuel to the fire. Few scientists doubt that life indeed exists elsewhere, but some believe we're more likely to make contact via radio waves. Join the search for extra-terrestrials and hear from scientists who think we are on the verge of making contact.

Natural Born Killers - The Science of Shark AttacksSubscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1
Every Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare...
One of the most feared predators of the sea is the shark, many species of which can strip a man to ribbons in a matter of minutes. But what prompts sharks to attack human beings, who are not their natural enemies? “The Science of Shark Attacks” is a documentary in which survivors of shark attacks share their life-and-death stories, as ichthyologists explain the attack behaviour of sharks, how to keep yourself safe in the water, and discuss attempts to cure sharks of their killer instinct.
Contrary to popular belief, only a few sharks are dangerous to humans. Out of more than 470 species, only four have been involved in a significant number of fatal, unprovoked attacks on humans: the great white, oceanic whitetip, tiger, and bull sharks. These sharks are large, powerful predators, and may sometimes attack and kill people. Despite being responsible for attacks on humans they have all been filmed without using a protective cage.
The perception of sharks as dangerous animals has been popularised by publicity given to a few isolated unprovoked attacks, such as the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916, and through popular fictional works about shark attacks, such as the Jaws film series. Jaws author Peter Benchley, as well as Jaws director Steven Spielberg later attempted to dispel the image of sharks as man-eating monsters.

Naked Science is an American documentary television series that premiered in 2004 on the National Geographic Channel. The programme features various subjects related to science and technology.
Stonehenge, England's most mysterious ancient monument, on a site older than the Pyramids of Ancient Egypt. 85 massive stones, some weighing more than 40 tonnes, stand guard on a remote and wind-swept plain. Why is it here, what is it for, how was it built? The answers are lost in the mists of time. Myth links Stonehenge to England's mysterious druids, Celtic priests said to have practiced ritual sacrifice. What we do know is that some of the rocks at Stonehenge were transported more than 200 miles across the waters of England's widest tidal estuary. Naked Science demonstrates how these stones could have been carried such a vast distance, and raised into place, using just the primitive technology possessed by Ancient Britons almost 5000 years ago. And, for the first time, the film employs modern forensic investigation techniques to examine human skeletons found near the site and recreates the face of one man who may have worked on the construction of this astonishing, ancient structure.

Description: Australian scientist Michael Alpers dedicated over 50 years to researching Kuru, an obscure and incurable brain disease unique to the Fore people of New Guinea. Kuru was once thought to be a psychosomatic illness, an infection, a genetic disorder, even a sorcerer's curse, but Alpers' findings pointed to cannibalism as the culprit. Yet a recent discovery has proven to be even more disturbing: the malady is linked to mad cow disease and its human equivalent, variant CJD. With a decades-long incubation period, could a larger outbreak be on its way?

The episode began by detailing the so-called "brain drain:" a number of mysterious disappearances and deaths of physicists, engineers, astronomers, and others in related fields. Among the strange deaths reported was that of one "Professor Ballantine" of Jodrell Bank. Before his death, Ballantine delivers a videotape to an academic friend, but when viewed on an ordinary videotape machine the only result is radio static.
Space Conspiracy
The missing scientists were involved in a secret American/Soviet plan in outer space, and further suggested that interplanetary space travel had been possible for much longer than was commonly accepted. The episode featured an Apollo astronaut "Bob Grodin" (played by Shane Rimmer) who claims to have stumbled on a mysterious lunar base during his moonwalk.

Alternative 3 Science Report 1977
Naked Science is an American documentary television series that premiered in 2004 on the National Geographic Channel. The programme features various subjects related to science and technology.
This episode of the Naked Science series explores the legend of the Bermuda Triangle, the mysterious region off the East Coast of the United States that has captured the public imagination with tales of vanishing ships and aircraft.
The Triangle goes by many names, The Vile Vortices or The Devil's Triangle. There are also debates as to its boundaries. But at the centre of the myths and legends are the 450,000 square miles of island strewn ocean between Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico.
Said to be a mysterious vortex claiming lives, ships, and planes at will. Some are never found, others turn up as gravestones on the ocean floor. Among such feared supernatural phenomena as UFOs and alien abduction, the Triangle is a serious contender. This programme sets out to unravel its secrets, finding out what lies behind the myth. Flying into the heart of the Bermuda Triangle.
Science Friction: Stem Cell ResearchThe third instalment of RTÉ's documentary series, 'Science Friction' where science and society collide, explores one of the most controversial issues in the history of science: the human embryo and its use in the ground-breaking field of stem cell research.
In this episode, presenter Liz Bonnin embarks on a journey to meet the different people, both within and outside the science community, whose lives are touched by the controversy surrounding the embryo. Liz talks to 22-year-old Geoff Harte, who was left paralysed after breaking his neck in a school rugby match, and now believes that stem cells may one day help him to walk again.
We also hear from Stephen Sullivan, a Harvard based Irish scientist who uses frozen embryos left over as a result of IVF treatment, as a source of stem cells for his groundbreaking research. On the flip side of the coin, Martin Clynes, a scientist at Dublin City University, explains why he passionately believes that research which destroys human embryos is morally unacceptable.
And finally, Liz meets Lisa O'Callaghan who, after giving birth to a daughter thanks to IVF treatment, now finds herself with frozen embryos of her own and confusion over what will become of them. O'Callaghan is not alone; this is an issue particularly relevant to Ireland, where the status of the embryo is mired in ambiguity and embryonic stem cell research remains a no-go area for scientists.
Stem cell research is one of the most exciting branches of modern medical science. Stem cells have the ability to transform themselves into any of the over 200 different types of cells found in the human body. Stem cells have been hailed by many scientists as the source of potential treatments for currently incurable conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and spinal injury.
However it's not a straight-forward 'good news' story because according to a large body of scientists, the best source of stem cells is currently the human embryo and in order to remove the stem cells, the embryo must be destroyed.
The controversy revolves around people's perception of the embryo. To some, it is the very early stage in the life of a human being and must be afforded the same rights as a fully developed person. But, to others, it is a collection of cells which, while having the potential to become a human being, can justifiably be used instead to treat terrible diseases.
In this compelling documentary, Bonnin confronts the fact that, sooner or later, the Irish public will have to make a decision on how we view the human embryo.

Wind is the flow of gases on a large scale. On the surface of the Earth, wind consists of the bulk movement of air. Wind is caused by differences in atmospheric pressure. When a difference in atmospheric pressure exists, air moves from the higher to the lower pressure area, resulting in winds of various speeds.
The wind is a powerful, invisible force. It reshapes landscapes, destroys buildings, and wrecks lives. In a single day a severe storm can cause over 10 billion dollars of damage, and when violent winds rip through a city they can kill dozens of people and seriously injure hundreds. Looking at the deadliest winds on Earth, within massive carpet-bombing hurricanes, and violent surgical-strike tornados, we meet the people who risk their lives to warn us of the storms. What is the fastest wind ever experienced? We discover just how fast a wind a person can take, and join the scientists in the front line, to discover the latest weapons in battle against these deadly winds. And can anything be done to reduce the wind's cause. To find out, Naked Science investigates the United States' most powerful storms to answer the question, can we tame the wind?

what is Buddhism?must watch only religion that goes with modern science.part 2only http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B42bbRvYhRg part 1 click this link religion that goes with science
nly religion that goes with science must watch you will understand ,what is real truth,
is it god who all controls or it;s up to you.......you will understand
What is Buddhism?
Buddhism is a religion to about 300 million people around the world. The word comes from 'budhi', 'to awaken'. It has its origins about 2,500 years ago when Siddhartha Gotama, known as the Buddha, was himself awakened (enlightened) at the age of 35.
• Is Buddhism a Religion?
To many, Buddhism goes beyond religion and is more of a philosophy or 'way of life'. It is a philosophy because philosophy 'means love of wisdom' and the Buddhist path can be summed up as:
(1) to lead a moral life,
(2) to be mindful and aware of thoughts and actions, and
(3) to develop wisdom and understanding.
• How Can Buddhism Help Me?
Buddhism explains a purpose to life, it explains apparent injustice and inequality around the world, and it provides a code of practice or way of life that leads to true happiness.
• Why is Buddhism Becoming Popular?
Buddhism is becoming popular in western countries for a number of reasons, The first good reason is Buddhism has answers to many of the problems in modern materialistic societies. It also includes (for those who are interested) a deep understanding of the human mind (and natural therapies) which prominent psychologists around the world are now discovering to be both very advanced and effective.
• Who Was the Buddha?
Siddhartha Gotama was born into a royal family in Lumbini, now located in Nepal, in 563 BC. At 29, he realised that wealth and luxury did not guarantee happiness, so he explored the different teachings religions and philosophies of the day, to find the key to human happiness. After six years of study and meditation he finally found 'the middle path' and was enlightened. After enlightenment, the Buddha spent the rest of his life teaching the principles of Buddhism — called the Dhamma, or Truth — until his death at the age of 80.
• Was the Buddha a God?
He was not, nor did he claim to be. He was a man who taught a path to enlightenment from his own experience.
• Do Buddhists Worship Idols?
Buddhists sometimes pay respect to images of the Buddha, not in worship, nor to ask for favours. A statue of the Buddha with hands rested gently in its lap and a compassionate smile reminds us to strive to develop peace and love within ourselves. Bowing to the statue is an expression of gratitude for the teaching.
• Is Buddhism Scientific?
Science is knowledge which can be made into a system, which depends upon seeing and testing facts and stating general natural laws. The core of Buddhism fit into this definition, because the Four Noble truths (see below) can be tested and proven by anyone in fact the Buddha himself asked his followers to test the teaching rather than accept his word as true. Buddhism depends more on understanding than faith

Naked Science - What is Human?2004 Documentary - Naked Science Season 1 - What is Human?
Naked Science is an American documentary television series that premiered in 2004 on the National Geographic Channel. The programme features various subjects related to science and technology.
What do you need to compete with the fiercest predators on Earth, to tame fire, to make tools, to survive cataclysmic natural disasters, and ultimately turn yourself from being an ape like creature, into human being?
Uncovering the secrets of the dead, we're looking back millions of years. This is the story of our battle to survive. Our species nearly became extinct. The struggle that eventually propelled one animal to rise above all other creatures on Earth. This is our story, the story of what makes us, human.
Evolution, what is human? In the beginning there were amoebas. Then there were fish and then there were walking, air-breathing fish. Then there were apes and then, well, me and you. At some point along the vast evolutionary scale a change occurred, a genetic mutation was born giving rise to a new species, the first 'human'. The problem is when? Naked Science travels the globe in search of our earliest ancestor, the first animal we can say is undeniably not an ape, but one of 'us'.

Earth science (also known as geoscience, the geosciences or the Earth sciences), is an all-embracing term for the sciences related to the planet Earth. It is arguably a special case in planetary science, the Earth being the only known life-bearing planet. There are both reductionist and holistic approaches to Earth science.
There are four major disciplines in earth sciences, namely geography, geology, geophysics and geodesy. These major disciplines use physics, chemistry, biology, chronology and mathematics to build a quantitative understanding of the principal areas or spheres of the Earth system.
The following fields of science are generally categorized within the geosciences:
- Geology describes the rocky parts of the Earth's crust (or lithosphere) and its historic development. Major subdisciplines are mineralogy and petrology, geochemistry, geomorphology, paleontology, stratigraphy, structural geology, engineering geology and sedimentology.
- Geophysics and Geodesy investigate the figure of the Earth, its reaction to forces and its magnetic and gravity fields. Geophysicists explore the Earth's core and mantle as well as the tectonic and seismic activity of the lithosphere.
- Soil science covers the outermost layer of the Earth's crust that is subject to soil formation processes (or pedosphere). Major subdisciplines include edaphology and pedology.
- Oceanography and hydrology (includes limnology) describe the marine and freshwater domains of the watery parts of the Earth (or hydrosphere). Major subdisciplines include hydrogeology and physical, chemical, and biological oceanography.
- Glaciology covers the icy parts of the Earth (or cryosphere).
- Atmospheric sciences cover the gaseous parts of the Earth (or atmosphere) between the surface and the exosphere (about 1000 km). Major subdisciplines are meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics.
- A very important linking sphere is the biosphere, the study of which is biology. The biosphere consists of all forms of life, from single-celled organisms to pine trees to people. The interactions of Earth's other spheres - lithosphere/geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and/or cryosphere and pedosphere - create the conditions that can support life.

Dr.Maurice and the Pharaoh - Qur'an & ScienceDr.Maurice the French professor was searching for a holy book that in harmony with the modern science .
After he made a discovery of which pharaoh is the one which were drowned while chasing Moses and his followers he realized that there is only one holy book that mention that the body of that particular pharaoh was retrieved after he was drowned !!
and his body was preserved by the will of God till today as a sign for the people ...
this is a complete documentary of the story of Dr.Maurice with his research .
Side note : Dr. Maurice converted to Islam & he kept researching the "Qur'an" for more than 10 years in the eyes of modern science & he studied Arabic language too , and he came to the conclusion that the "Qur'an" & modern science are in total harmony .

[1/6] BBC - The Science of Killing Human BeingsFormer Conservative MP, Michael Portillo pushes his body to the brink of death in an investigation into the science of execution.
As the American Supreme Court examines whether the lethal injection is causing prisoners to die in unnecessary pain Michael sets out to find a solution which is fundamentally humane. To do so he examines the key methods of execution available today: he discovers why convicts can catch on fire in the electric chair, learns how easy it is to botch a hanging and inhales a noxious gas to experience first hand the terror of the gas chamber.
Armed with some startling evidence Michael considers a completely new approach. Will it be the answer? There is only one way of finding out - to experience it himself.

Russellian Science: TEC - Part 12 - The Unseen Octaves of Space Gases, aka "Ether/Aether"The archaic theory of an aether as postulated by 17th to 19th Century theorists is taken apart in this video. Academic Science still holds to an ether theory in the form of Einstein's work, which is not tenable and all of his theories have been debunked in great detail. See the links below:
We explain in this video how Walter Russell's three Octaves of Space Gases account for the attributes of what has been called ether/aether in the past and which is currently called "space, or field" in contemporary academic science.
We also address the problem created by modern day dissenting Electric Universe scientists who reject Einstein's false theories which he based on a gravity centered Universe and replace it using their concept of Plasma of the EUM based on the false theory of a Nuclear Atom.
I have been recently blocked from the Thunderbolts Channel for suggesting they research the works of Walter and Lao Russell to find the causes to the many effects showcased in their videos, books and websites::

http://www.bibhasde.com/ageoffakery.html
Bibhas reveals the massive fraud created by Nasa and TPTB in order to prop up the false theories of einstein's dysfunctional mythematical garble with fakery and fraud. This is costing taxpayers billions of dollars as the quackademics desperately try and cover up the fact that the slave psyence they memorized to obtain their false status/degrees and paychecks is a fraud to the core. These "jewish genius" lies have led humanity into a hell hole world owned by Corporate: energy barons, war mongers and central bankers, otherwise known as TPTB. It is high time einstein's zionist created, owned and promoted psyence was resigned to the trash bin for all eternity, so humanity may free ourselves from the shackles of Goy slavery and usher in a new era of unlimited abundance happiness and prosperity for the 99% of us who have suffered under the insidious reign of the "TRIBE"!

Sound of attraction - Science of AttractionIn the modern world we communicate via the telephone more than ever, in many cases with people we have never met. What assumptions do we all make about people's attractiveness based upon their voices? Our experiment introduced by Derren Brown and presented by Kat Akingbade and Charlie McDonnell aims to answer some of these questions. This is Channel 4's Science Of Attraction.

Naked Science is an American documentary television series that premiered in 2004 on the National Geographic Channel. The programme features various subjects related to science and technology.
Surviving Nature's Fury - Human beings now travel the globe, to some of the most remote and hostile regions, and in doing so come up against the most deadly weather, violent storms that can rip a person to shreds, floods that carry them away and drown them and blizzards that can freeze an individual to death.
But extreme weather can also seek us out. Tornados and flash floods have no regard for society and can destroy whole communities, freezing weather can descend on cities and lightning can strike in the very heart of towns.
Naked Science will seek out those incredible individuals who have survived the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them and ask the question; what is the deadliest weather that a human being can survive?
Bird Brains (Nova - Science Now)Birds have an undeserved reputation for low brainpower. In fact, they produce one of the most glorious phenomena in nature: birdsong. How do their brains do it? And what does this skill tell us about the evolution of another remarkable phenomenon, human language?
Spirit Science 20 ~ Water~ NOTE FROM PATCHMAN - In this video I state that Science doesn't have answers to some questions which science DOES have answers to. I invite you not to get upset with these statements, but just allow them, there is a much deeper understanding that I am discussing here, and if you get upset at one particular sentence or two, you may miss the rest of the message. Thank you, and enjoy this short film about water ^_^
Messages from Water: http://thespiritscience.net/spirit/waterbook
Water. What is it? We all interact with water, we're all made of water, and yet in science today we don't even really understand what it is. There are many questions about water and what it is that we really don't have conclusive answers too. Yes ~ Science has answers for many of these questions, and the thing is is that it opens up even more questions. Why do things happen in the way that they do? Why is it like that? What does it mean for the bigger picture.
For the message of this video is not to say that Science is having a hard time understanding something, but rather that there is an even larger understanding of Water and its importance for life that we can look at and be open to discussing. And even as a theory, these ideas make way for a grand understanding of what Life truly is.
It is actually a wonderful thing, because admitting we know little about something gives us an opportunity to find something out.
When we REALLY look at water (As we do in this video), we can see there is SO much more to Water than meets the eye, and the understanding of what it is can open up to something far grander than what we originally perceived it to be. Water is Life, and it is You.

Science Bulletins: The Risk Beneath BangladeshWith a population exceeding 160 million in an area the size of Iowa, Bangladesh is Earth's most crowded nation. It also straddles several tectonic plate boundaries. This Bulletin follows geologists as they map a significant fault near the capital, Dhaka, and study how an earthquake on that fault could cause a river to shift dramatically through the populous region.
Science Bulletins is a production of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology (NCSLET), part of the Department of Education at the American Museum of Natural History.

Science Bulletins: Attachment Theory—Understanding the Essential BondIn 1958, psychologist John Bowlby pioneered "attachment theory," the idea that the early bond between parent and child is critical to a child's emotional development. Since then, scientists have discovered that insecure attachment during formative years can significantly stress both the developing brain and body, resulting in long-term psychological and physical ailments. For example, low levels of attachment security have been linked to diminished levels of cortisol, a steroidal hormone released in response to stress that is critical in reducing inflammation in the body. Watch the latest Human Feature from the Museum's Science Bulletins program to see how recent studies are using cortisol levels as a marker to determine the success of early intervention in building stronger attachments between struggling parents and children. Visitors to AMNH may view the video in the Hall of Human Origins until January 2, 2012.

Tails You Win: The Science of ChanceSmart and witty, jam-packed with augmented-reality graphics and fascinating history, this film, presented by Professor David Spiegelhalter, tries to pin down what chance is and how it works in the real world. For once this really is 'risky' television.
The film follows in the footsteps of The Joy of Stats, which won the prestigious Grierson Award for Best Science/Natural History programme of 2011. Now the same blend of wit and wisdom, animation, graphics and gleeful nerdery is applied to the joys of chance and the mysteries of probability, the vital branch of mathematics that gives us a handle on what might happen in the future. Professor Spiegelhalter is ideally suited to that task, being Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge University, as well as being a recent Winter Wipeout contestant on BBC TV.
How can you maximise your chances of living till you're 100? Why do many of us experience so many spooky coincidences? Should I take an umbrella? These are just some of the everyday questions the film tackles as it moves between Cambridge, Las Vegas, San Francisco and... Reading.
Yet the film isn't shy of some rather loftier questions. After all, our lives are pulled about and pushed around by the mysterious workings of chance, fate, luck, call it what you will. But what actually is chance? Is it something fundamental to the fabric of the universe? Or rather, as the French 18th century scientist Pierre Laplace put it, 'merely a measure of our ignorance'.
Along the way Spiegelhalter is thrilled to discover One Million Random Digits, probably the most boring book in the world, but one full of hidden patterns and shapes. He introduces us to the cheery little unit called the micromort (a one-in-a-million chance of dying), taking the rational decision to go sky-diving because doing so only increases his risk of dying this year from 7000 to 7007 micromorts. And in one sequence he uses the latest infographics to demonstrate how life expectancy has increased in his lifetime and how it is affected by our lifestyle choices - drinking, obesity, smoking and exercise.
Did you know that by running regularly for half an hour a day you can expect to extend your life by half an hour a day? So all very well... if you like running.
Ultimately, Tails You Win: The Science of Chance tells the story of how we discovered how chance works, and even to work out the odds for the future; how we tried - but so often failed - to conquer it; and how we may finally be learning to love it, increasingly setting uncertainty itself to work to help crack some of science's more intractable problems.
Other contributors include former England cricketer Ed Smith, whose career was cut down in its prime through a freak, unlucky accident; Las Vegas gambling legend Mike Shackleford, the self-styled 'Wizard of Odds'; and chief economist of the Bank of England, Spencer Dale.
