The History of the Scottish FlagOne of the most prominent parts of the Union Flag is the Scottish Flag or Saltire, which is a bonny flag in its own right as well. In this video, as part 2 of my series on the Union Flag and the flags that make it up, I'm going to look at why this flag became the Scottish flag, what's the symbolism behind it and which ones came before it. Lots of vexiology, historiography and etymology to come, strap in because this, is History with Hilbert!

The Battle of Bannockburn, Stirling Bridge and Falkirk - The real BraveheartTragedy strikes Scotland in 1286. The beloved king, Alexander III dies. His only heir, Margaret also dies a few years later. Two prominent candidates emerge for the throne: Bruce and Balliol. The nobles ask Edward I of England to arbitrate. During the process that became known as the Great Cause, Balliol is elected king. To protect himself, Balliol concludes the Auld Alliance with France. In retaliation Edward invades and deposes the Scottish King. William Wallace leads a rebellion against the English and defeats them at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Edward invades again and defeats the Scotts at the Battle of Falkirk. Wallace is tried as a traitor and executed.
In 1306 Robert the Bruce is crowned king. Edward I dies before he could invade again and his inept son, Edward II becomes king. Bruce is free to reconquer his country. The English invade again and are defeated at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Edward II is deposed by his son Edward III, who makes peace with the Scotts. The First Scottish war of independence is over and after the Declaration of Arbroath the country gains international recognition.
Bannockburn700th- quest for Bannockburn- 2014My humble thanks to BBC Scotland for allowing me to share their much appreciated production, Another noble attempt from the A Team of Scottish Archaeologists to finally solve the Enigma that is the Battle of Bannockburn June 23 /24 1314. The enactments presented here are first class,/ the commitment shown by all is again highly commendable but… when you continually stick to the same two areas to search in you will continually come up short. As local Bannockburn citizen @2001 perseus has pointed out all those object recovered on the Carse could easily have been washed down from further up the burn. I feel sorry for both Tony Pollard and Neil Oliver for unquestionably they are both dedicated to solving this once and for all. I hope they take a leaf from the Robert The Bruce Legend and try again as clearly they must rethink their whole game plan. As anyone who has been following the comments by @2001 perseus will have noted his thesis is the only logical avenue left.
With the greatest respect to both men Neil Oliver and Tony Pollard its time to break free from the confines of this square box you been restricted to and be bold aye maverick and concentrate on those areas you have not deemed appropriate to search. There is still all to play for it’s not over yet ‘Nobody finds what we don’t find’ all the best for the future Tony Pollard and Neil Oliver.
William Wallace documentaryHistory documentary from Channel 4 presented by Tony Robinson from the Fact or fiction series. One of the best documentaries I have seen on the man. I am all for freedom of speech and please do leave a comment but any bad language will be removed..
ᴴᴰ The True Story: Robert the Bruce - Scotland's HeroIn the struggle for independence over the English, Robert the Bruce was the strategic and passionate patriot King of Scotland that grabbed his axe and fought against the English for the freedom of Scotland. Behind him marched thousands of Scottish patriots. He was the leader Scotland deserved and needed.
I wanted to make this documentary about King Robert I the Bruce of Scotland, because after the release of Mel Gibson's Braveheart movie, his name has been dramatically weakened as many took for a fact everything that was depicted in the movie. However, although it is a beautiful film about William Wallace, it is also highly suggestive and historically inacurrate at some points. For example, Wallace never invaded England and captured York. Also, most importantly, Robert never betrayed Wallace. Robert simply stayed quiet during his rebellion because he argued that political power and recognition from other Kingdoms was necissary to truly establish Scotland as a Kingdom again. Braveheart displays Robert as a weak, cowardice and flimsy charachter, when in history he was far from it. He was deeply intelligent, brave, patriotic, stern and solid. This was the man that truly led Scotland to victory. He deserves more honor and fame and its a shame that his name has been covered with dust.

Established in April 2018 by the University of Dundee's Centre for Scottish Culture in collaboration with History Scotland, the world’s leading Scottish history magazine, the History Scotland Lectures are held twice yearly.
NOTE: During the Q&A, it was implied that the 1701 Act of Succession was repealed by David Cameron’s government. This is incorrect; all that has changed is that British monarchs can now marry a Catholic.
Jacobites Of ScotlandThe Jacobites were the supporters of King James VII of Scotland and II of England and his heirs.
