Stop For Maya Sponsorship VideoStop For Maya is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded in the memory of Maya Hirsch, a four year old girl who was killed in Chicago in May 2006 by a driver who ignored a stop sign at a busy crosswalk. Stop For Maya is committed to advocating for pedestrian and bicyclist safety in and around the city of Chicago and to raising awareness of the need for all drivers to obey basic traffic safety laws.

Our 5th annual Walk for Maya will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2011 in Lincoln Park at the corner of Lincoln Park West and Belden. The funds raised at the walk will support Children's Memorial Hospital Heartlight Bereavement Program, which supports families who have lost loved ones in traumatic incidents, particularly children. All contributions will help develop programming to support the unique needs of medical providers, so they are better able to care for trauma victims and their families, and cope with their own emotional struggles.
Recycling Nuclear Fuel at Argonne National LaboratoryCurrently, when using nuclear energy only about five percent of the uranium used in a fuel rod gets fissioned for energy; after that, the rods are taken out of the reactor and put into permanent storage. There is a way, however, to use almost all of the uranium in a fuel rod. Recycling used nuclear fuel could produce hundreds of years of energy from just the uranium we've already mined, all of it carbon-free. Problems with older technology put a halt to recycling used nuclear fuel in the United States, but new techniques developed by scientists at Argonne National Laboratory address many of those issues.
