Here are my top interviewing tips for gaining a job in the field of public relations. First impressions are important, and in PR you need to dress the part. Wear something fashionable, on-trend, chic and not too corporate, unless you're applying for a corporate PR position. But if you're applying for anything in entertainment, fashion and brands, it's important again to dress on-trend.
The next thing is being prepared. Come to the interview with writing samples, a clip book of press that you've pitched and placed. Now, I know if this is an entry level position, you may not have these things yet. But the fact that you know about them and that they exist and that you know that that's what you're going to be doing once you gain that job in PR, be prepared.
So, have a sample of the way that you write. Give an example of what a prospective client would be for you and the sections and the placements you would like to get for them. If you came in to an interview with me, and let's say you didn't have any experience but you knew that field of PR, and you said, "If this was my client, this would be the pitch that I would pitch for them, and this is the sections in the magazine that I would get them in," and give me an example in that interview I'd be sold. And no one has done it to me yet.
Like I said, your Rolodex is everything. So, you're going to be asked in an interview, "Who are your contacts? Who are your media relationships? What celebrity publicists or celebrity managers do you have relationships with?" Come in with three to five strong contacts that you can say, "These people will help me in the position at your company," because again, it's about who you know.
Also, be prepared to have a list of magazines, blogs, and newspapers that you read on a daily basis. Being that our job is to get our clients in the news, you need to know the news. So during the interview, I want you to tell your future employer, blogs, magazines and newspapers that you read on a daily basis and that you're up to date on what's current.

How to Get an Internship in PR.
First, start out by checking your college job listing boards because all of the PR firms post internship opportunities on those boards. I have internships opportunities at NYU, FIT, all local colleges.
Another thing is networking. Maybe your parents have friends in the field of PR. A lot of my interns come from recommendations, from parents having their children wanting to get into the field of PR. My mom is always calling me like, "So-and-so's daughter wants to get into PR. Can you give her a PR job?" Yes, I'll give them an internship. In the summer, we're always looking for interns, but that's also the most competitive time because everybody is out of school looking for that internship. But we need interns all year round.
So if you really want to break into that, if there's a key company that you really want to be at, intern during the school semester. We're looking for fall and spring interns all the time, and it's less busy so you have more time to get your feet wet and gain even more valuable experience. In the summer, I have about ten interns, and sometimes they're twiddling their thumbs. But in the spring and in the fall, you are working.
Also, it's really important to know the company when you're applying for an internship and what they do. Don't walk in the door not knowing what type of PR firm it is. You need to know the clients that they represent and be intelligent, and know that because it's a very important thing for people looking to hire anyone from interns to actual job positions.

Learn about Kelly Brady, one of Howcast's public relations experts, in this video.
Hi. My name is Kelly Brady and I've been working in the field of PR for almost ten years now. I am originally from San Diego. I moved to New York about 11 years ago. I started as an intern at Lizzie Grubman Public Relations. Lizzie was approached to do a TV show on MTV, so it was a show about her and her four PR girls that worked for her. So I was one of those girls. When this show was on their air, it was when the first season of The Apprentice was on and we followed Newlyweds. It was a long time ago, and it was way before its time. But it was a great way to get my feet wet in the field of PR.
About two and a half years ago, or going on three, I decided to start my own PR firm with my good friend Matt Levine. We created Brandsway Creative. It's been a whirlwind. I can't even believe it's almost been three years. We represent people, places, and products. We have a very large talent division where we represent music artists, DJs, super models, actresses, actors, to personalities like fashion stylists and astrologists.
We also have brands. We've got a health and beauty section where we represent this new fitness club called Chase 23. We've got the PR Michelle Salon. We've got a new fitness brand clothing.
Then we get into hospitality where I represent The Stand, which is a new comedy club and restaurant. We've got the Hanky Panky club in Webster Hall. We've got Lucky Strike bowling alley. We've got Petaluma restaurant on the Upper East Side.
I'm very proud of what I've created in the past three years. If you want to check out our website go to www.brandswaycreative.com, or follow us on Twitter at brandswaycreative, and you can also follow me at kellyjbrady.

How to Use Social Media in PR | Public RelationsWatch more How to Work in Public Relations videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/508041-How-to-Work-with-the-Press-Public-Relations
Learn how to use social media in PR from celebrity publicist Kelly Brady in this Howcast video.
Social media is relatively a new tool for the PR industry. Over the past three years, it has become a pretty valuable tool for us. Everything from Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Clout, to Four Square, it's a new media to reach more consumers and more people. It allows you to cast a wider net to get the message out there, thus creating a buzz about the particular account you're working on.
One of the things that social media has really helped me with is brands. You can really get that celebrity endorsement through Twitter. You send a celebrity a product that you're pushing, they love it, they tweet a picture about it, and it's golden. It's a way to put that stamp of approval on whatever product you're promoting or whatever restaurant is your client.
Another thing that I love about social media and how it's helped us in the PR world is the ability to take that article that you've gotten and spread it out to your fans and followers. Back in the day, let's say you received an article in the New York Post. It would be online, it would be in the Post, and whoever picked up the Post that day or whoever was online saw it. Now, you can tweet out that link to all your followers. You can put it on Facebook. You can put it on Instagram. That allows you to reach this wider audience and it allows more viewership on the message that you're trying to spread.
Another thing that I love about social media is just the access to mass people. When I started ages ago and I was inviting people to a party, it was hard invites and email invites. Now, I can go onto my company Facebook page or my personal Facebook page and send it directly into their inbox, hand pick that crowd even more so. Who knows? Someone may not open up their mail or their email. It's just another way to target your audience so specifically.
Another thing that social media has done for me is, I wouldn't say you can do this all the time, but I was trying to get the attention of an editor about a story that they needed to be in the know about, and for some reason, they weren't responding to me over email. I basically tweeted a link at them because I knew they were writing a story about this and I knew that my client would be perfect for this story. For some reason, they just weren't answering my emails or phone calls. I tweeted them a little piece of information in time for their deadline, and they got back to me. It was funny. I couldn't break through to this editor through phone or email, and I knew they were writing this story that my client would be perfect for. I was able to send them a small tweet. They got back to me and my client was included in the story. Go figure.
