TRF Project Profile: Mariposa Food Co-OpIn 2010, The Reinvestment Fund provided financing to Mariposa Food Co-op to acquire and renovate its new facility in West Philadelphia. This member-owned food cooperative sells fresh produce and educates consumers on the benefits of healthy eating.
The new store is five times the size of the former space and offers an expanded selection of locally-produced, organic and conventional products. The facility also includes a community meeting. Mariposa's expansion means a significant transformation for the organization, but also deeper contributions to the local and regional economy. With considerably more space and more customers, Mariposa will be able to expand its product lines and buying power, further supporting regional farmers and distributors of healthy and sustainable food. Since Mariposa Food Co-op is owned and operated by its members, profits will stay in the neighborhood.
TRF Project Profile: Freire Charter SchoolIn 2012, The Reinvestment Fund (TRF) provided a loan to Freire Charter School for leasehold improvements to a facility to house a new middle school campus.
In 2010, this Philadelphia charter high school was approved to open a 500-student middle school, doubling its enrollment from 500 students in grades 9-12 to 1,000 students in grades 5-12.
The middle school facility is located in a former Woolworths building in Center City that has stood vacant for 20 years. The facility is located ten blocks away from Freire's current high school, which TRF also helped finance.
Reinvestment Fund Project Profile: Pan American Academy Charter SchoolFinancing from The Reinvestment Fund (TRF -- http://www.trfund.com) is supporting the construction of a new facility for the Pan American Academy Charter School in Philadelphia. The school was founded in 2008 by Congreso de Latinos Unidos, a nationally-recognized, nonprofit organization that has been providing social, economic, education and health services to the Latino community in Philadelphia for over 30 years.
The school provides one of the few dual-language education options for Philadelphia's growing Latino population. Pan American Academy Charter School's new facility will be able to accommodate over 700 students in grades K-8, the school's maximum charter enrollment. The new school will be part of a growing Congreso campus, which includes Congreso headquarters and a separate building housing several social service programs.
Profile: Progress PlazaThe Reinvestment Fund (TRF -- http://www.trfund.com) provided financing to support the renovation of Progress Plaza, a supermarket-anchored retail center in Philadelphia. The retail center is the nation's oldest African-American owned and operated shopping center. The center was built in 1968 by civil rights leader Rev. Leon Sullivan and had been in disrepair for more than a decade since its anchor tenant, a supermarket, moved out.
With the financing, TRF helped the owners and a new supermarket operator, renovate the center, demolish the old supermarket and construct a new one in its place. The three-phased development project also included a two-story office building and retail space. TRF financing for the project included New Markets Tax Credits and capital through the Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative (FFFI).
