Evening Hymn (Henry Balfour Gardiner) - Worcester CathedralBalfour Gardiner's Evening Hymn, sung by the choir of Worcester Cathedral
Camille Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre, Op. 40Danse macabre, Op. 40, is a tone poem for orchestra, written in 1874 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns.
It started out in 1872 as an art song for voice and piano with a French text by the poet Henri Cazalis, which is based in an old French superstition. In 1874, the composer expanded and reworked the piece into a tone poem, replacing the vocal line with a solo violin.
The piece opens with a harp playing a single note, D, twelve times (the twelve strokes of midnight) which is accompanied by soft chords from the string section. This then leads to the E flat and A chords also known as a tritone or the "Devil's chord", and the solo violin's E string is tuned a half step lower to create this effect played by a solo violinist, which represents death. After which the main theme is heard on a solo flute and is followed by a descending scale on the solo violin which is accompanied by soft chords from the string section, particularly the lower instruments of the string section, followed by the full orchestra who then joins in on the descending scale. The main theme and the scale is then heard throughout the various sections of the orchestra until it breaks to the solo violin and the harp playing the scale. The piece becomes more energetic and climaxes with the full orchestra playing very strong dynamics. Towards the end of the piece, there is another violin solo, now in modulation, which is then joined by the rest of the orchestra. The final section represents the dawn breaking (a cockerel's crow, represented by the oboe) and the skeletons returning to their graves.
Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini, or Our Lady of the Conception of the Capuchins, is a church in Rome, Italy, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII, whose brother, Antonio Barberini, was a Capuchin friar. It is located at Via Veneto, close to Piazza Barberini.
The church is most famous as an ossuary, known as the Capuchin Crypt, in which is displayed the bones of over 4,000 Capuchin friars, collected between the years of 1528 and 1870. The bones are fashioned into decorative displays in the Baroque and Rococo style. The popularity of the crypt as a tourist attraction once rivalled the Catacombs.

Antal Dorati conducts the London Symphony Orchestra. Recorded by Mercury in 1961.
"Appalachian Spring (Ballet for Martha) was written in 1943-44, to satisfy a commission from the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation, and first performed by Martha Graham and her company at the Coolidge Festival in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., October 30, 1944. The orchestral suite, recorded here, omitting certain sections of the ballet and rescored for concert performance, dates from the spring of 1945. The same year the work won both the Pulitzer Prize for music and the New York Music Critics Circle Award for stage works of the previous season.
"Copland described the action of the ballet as concerning 'a pioneer celebration in spring around a newly-built farmhouse in the Pennsylvania Hills in the early part of the last century. The bride-to-be and the young farmer-husband enact the emotions, joyful and apprehensive, their new domestic partnership invites. An older neighbor suggests now and then the rocky confidence of experience. A revivalist and his followers remind the new householders of the strange and terrible aspects of human fate. At the end the couple are left quiet and strong in their new house.'
"The music of Appalachian Spring explores still more inventively the vein of lucidity opened by the works just preceding. With one exception, however, it does not make use of pre-existing tunes; like Bartók and Falla, Copland has distilled the character of folk music and imbued the entire fabric with its essence. The one exception is a Shaker hymn, 'Simple Gifts,' found in Edward D. Andrews's collection, which forms the basis of a set of variations in the seventh of the eight sections of the ballet suite.
"Here is the same openness of texture that characterized Billy the Kid, though the melodic and harmonic formations are more often triadic than quintal or quartal. The tunes themselves savor of folklore, though of a somewhat sophistical variety. The dancelike tunes in particular make use of jagged leaps and frequently irregular rhythms, which somehow never negate their 'barn dance' quality. ... Appalachian Spring is mainly reflective and subtle. Even in its more athletic pages--the dance of the revivalist and his flock, and the joyful dance of the bride--it remains relatively subjective.
"The scores of few ballets are sufficiently integrated to make concert performance meaningful without knowledge of plot and choreography. Copland's Pennsylvania 'rite of spring' is one of the few; its musical values are sufficient by themselves to keep it in focus. The orchestral suite can, and does, stand on its own feet." - Halsey Stevens

About 15 years ago, neurobiologists from the University of California at Irvine performed an experiment which concluded that listening to K. 448 for 10 minutes was correlated with a temporal increase of 8-9 IQ points. However, they determined that this enhanced intellectual capacity was related to spatial intelligence (the dependent variable), and that it only lasted about 15 minutes. Each of 36 college students was given three treatments (the independent variable) before being tested three respective times: listening to K. 448 for 10 minutes; a relaxation tape for 10 minutes; and sitting in silence for 10 minutes. Directly after each treatment was applied, the test subject was assigned to tackle spatial reasoning exercises (such as paper-folding problems), and the associated score was then converted to a Stanford-Binet intelligence scale. Statistical analyses showed that the mean IQs corresponding to the second and third treatments were not significantly different from one another, but the average IQ for the first treatment was significantly higher than the other two treatments.

Swan Lake Ballet (Tchaikovsky) - Act II: XIV. Scene (Moderato)The music to Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake is absolutely incredible, and I believe that I am in possession of the greatest recording of the entire ballet. The London Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Andre Previn, truly captures the essence of the beautiful music that Tchaikovsky wrote, and I'm glad to share it with the world.
This is Part nine of the ballet, which includes:
Act II:
XIV. Scene (Moderato)
-This is a version of the extremely popular and heavenly "Swan Lake Theme" that is usually associated with the ballet.

Hans Zimmer: Solomon ("12 Years a Slave" Soundtrack)"Solomon" by Hans Zimmer
From the original soundtrack to "12 Years a Slave."
Another beautiful, melancholy composition by Zimmer. Chord progression is almost identical to that of Zimmer's "Time" from the soundtrack to "Inception" (though slower and mournful).
Maurice Ravel - Valses nobles et sentimentalesThe "Valses nobles et sentimentales" is a suite of waltzes composed by Maurice Ravel. The piano version was published in 1911, and an orchestral version was published in 1912. The suite contains an eclectic blend of Impressionist and Modernist music, which is especially evident in the orchestrated version.
Ravel was intrigued by the waltz genre. By 1906 he had started composing what later would become La valse, in which he tried to epitomise everything this popular genre encompassed. In 1911, prior to the 1919 publication of La valse, he published the piano version of his suite of eight Valses nobles et sentimentales. The work was first performed on May 8, 1911 by Louis Aubert, to whom the work is dedicated, at a performance of new works where the composers were not identified. It was sponsored by the Société Musicale Indépendante, to promote the works of more adventurous composers, without "burdening" critics with the attached labels of authorship. This was in theory supposed to encourage the critics to evaluate what they actually heard rather than simply judging the piece by the name of the composer. The anonymous work generated a disturbing chorus of boos and cat calls. Many were unnerved by the acerbic harmonic palette that he employed. Some even thought the piece was a parody. When the votes were tallied, the nominated composers included Erik Satie, Charles Koechlin, Vincent d'Indy and even Zoltán Kodály, but "a minute majority," Ravel recalled, "ascribed the paternity of the Valses to me.

The King's Singers: Gesualdo, Tenebrae Responsories for Maundy ThursdayGesualdo, Tenebrae Responsories for Maundy Thursday, The King's Singers
This album is by the Italian Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo. He is considered to be one of the finest and certainly one of the most innovative composers of Italian madrigals in the late Renaissance. In this album we can found his use of dissonance and phrasing to be way ahead of his time, creating very beautiful and haunting choral music. The listener will get the most from this music by guiding their listening with the liner notes, in a meditative environment like the Abby where it was recorded. The king's singers made considerable effort to be very picturesque in their interpretation of the Lessons of the Holy Week story making the music come to new life even though it was written 400 years ago!.(http://www.kingssingers.com)
Singers: David Hurley (countertenor), Robin Tyson (countertenor), Paul Phoenix (tenor), Philip Lawson (baritone), Gabriel Crouch (baritone), Stephen Connolly (bass).

Arvo Part - I am the true VineFirst time I heard this track I was on my war to the Military oddesy show in kent and got Stuck in Traffic on the m25 for 3 hours. I was Beyond stressed at this point and decided to try and find the traffic reports on the car radio. After a few mins of getting nothing my radio suddenly picked up Classic FM. This song had just started and for the few moments it was on I didnt care about being in terrible traffic or how hot it was, all the stress just seemed to melt away. After it ended I wrote down the song name on my phone and after a few months I managed to find it. I thought id share it with you all.

Olafur Arnalds | NPR MUSIC FRONT ROWHow can music be happy and sad at the same time? Listen to Olafur Arnalds and you'll hear it. Depending on your mood, the tone changes, and a song that may have been uplifting one day sounds like an elegy the next. It's spacious, undeniably beautiful work. Much of the music performed in this concert, recorded on April 18 at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York City, is drawn from the Icelandic musician's recent album For Now I Am Winter.
I was knocked out by a trio performance of Arnald's music at SXSW, but this show re-imagined his magnificent work with a small orchestra: 28 musicians known as Ensemble LPR, along with guest singer Arnor Dan. Arnalds challenged the group in unusual ways, sometimes asking its members to play from memory and emotion rather than looking at their scores. The result is a night of thrilling, unforgettable music.
