Living off the grid in AustraliaJill Redwood has lived a remarkable life. As one of the original alternative lifestyle' pioneers to move to Goongerah in remote East Gippsland over 30 years ago, she has devoted her life to saving the local forests and environment more generally.
A Jill of all trades, Jill built her own house on her property and lives entirely off the grid with no mains power or town water, mobile reception or television. Living on around $80 a week, Jill has over sixty animals to keep her company and an abundant garden that out serves as an organic supermarket right at her doorstep. Her main expenses are animal feed and the rates on her property.

How To Be Free In 2024: Start An Off Grid HomesteadIn this video I talk about everything off grid living. Water, outhouse, wood heat, shelter, cabins, and more. Much of this I learned the hard way. Hopefully this helps someone who is looking to live a similar lifestyle, and helps them realize this way of life is absolutely obtainable in 2024. #diy #outdoors #homestead

Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!
Growing cassava in the Rain | LIVING OFF THE GRID | Episode 52#survival #offgrid #cassava
The light rain continues, signaling that spring has returned, repeating the cycle of nature. The fortunate thing is that we have all survived the harsh winter to reach the fifth month of our struggle for survival here. However, some predatory animals have awakened and attacked the poultry (based on the traces left, they could be weasels or mongooses), and a few ducks have gone missing...

How I Built This Hidden Forest Shelter with Stone, Logs, and a FireplaceEver wondered how to create a warm, waterproof shelter right from the forest floor? 🌲🔥
Join me (and my loyal dog) on a 30-day journey as we transform raw rocks, scrap wood, and hand-dug clay into a cozy underground shelter—complete with a wood-burning stove and a turntable for survival tasks.
What You'll See in This Video:
⛏️ Days 1–4: Site Selection & Chamber Digging
🌳 Days 5–10: Felling and Building a Timber Roof
🪨 Days 11–13: Dry Stacking Stone Walls & Sealing with Stone
🛏️ Days 14–17: Building Raised Log Beds & Shelves
🐕 Days 18–29: Adding Turntables, Dog Corners, and Final Touches
🌙 Day 20: First Night Underground—Testing for Warmth, Airflow, and Comfort
Throughout the build, I relied on simple hand tools—axe, shovel, pickaxe, and saw—plus natural rope and clay mortar. No nails, no power tools, no shortcuts.
If you enjoy bushcraft, off-grid living, primitive skills or simply relaxing to the sounds of the forest, you'll feel right at home here. Pull up a stump, grab a warm drink and watch the forest return to you.
Secret of the self-sufficient life of an elderly couple in a mountain village far from civilizationWe invite you on an exciting trip to the mountain hut in the picturesque Tarasivka, in Transcarpathia, Ukraine. Their life is more than just daily life: it is a story about the strength of the human spirit, resilience and love for simple joys. How do they manage to maintain energy, inspiration and harmony in such conditions? Find out in our new film!

We Bought 160 Acres of Off-Grid Wilderness (And Found Home) [S1 Ep1]In 2023, we set out to find land—not just any land, but a place off the beaten path where we could build a life from scratch. After failed bids and rough trails, we found it: 160 acres of untamed northern Ontario wilderness. This episode tells the story of how we found the land, scouted it by river and drone, and knew it was home the moment we saw it.
Follow along as we begin carving a way in, exploring by XR70, paddling upriver, and preparing for the challenges ahead. This is the start of our off-grid journey—one step closer to building a dream in the wild.

Woman Living Off-Grid on a Remote Island – 2 Years in a Small CabinAmanda lives alone in an off-grid cabin on a remote island in British Columbia. She previously lived on a sailboat in Vancouver for 8 years and then headed North with her boat. She eventually wanted to move onto land because her dog Buttercup was getting older and after searching online, she connected with the owners of an island who were looking for a caretaker to keep an eye on things.
So for the past two years, Amanda has lived solo on the island (aside from a couple of months in the summer when the owners and cabin guests are visiting) and she has taken care of everything from splitting and stacking firewood, maintaining the lawn, running the generators, and a lot more! It's a big job and she does most of her caretaker tasks in the morning and in the afternoons she works remotely as a web designer. She also has a great YouTube channel that she uses to document her liveaboard and off-grid lifestyles.

We Bought an Off Grid Cabin in Alaska - FIRST LOOK!After 15 years of dreaming, we finally did it - bought our own off grid homestead, In Alaska! 🏔️
My wife Kay and I have been chasing this dream since our first son was born. Banks wouldn't give us loans, work wasn't steady, but we never gave up. When I got that phone call about a cabin for sale in Alaska, I knew this was our shot.
But buying a cabin sight unseen 4,000+ miles away? That's insane. So my son and I hopped on a plane to see if this rustic log cabin could become our family's off-grid homestead.
Come along with us as we get a first look at the cabin!

Island Tiny Home Done?! Solar and NEW Puppy! | Building a Log Cabin on Our Island Ep.20Back on the Island and this time we have a new member, Sini! She is a 3 month old Bernese Mountain Dog.
This trip we finished the interior of the mini cabin, moved in and set up solar!
Hopefully with the new solar setup we no longer need to take the power stations off the island and can do longer trips.
The only things left at the mini cabin are a deck and dock then its gonna be time to start working on the Sauna Cabin!
More about us, the island and the process:
The island is completely secluded, has no electricity or plumbing and currently has nothing on it but trees. We want to turn this island into a fully functioning summer cottage with a log cabin, sauna and other amenities. Most of the work is gonna be done in the summer months as the lake freezes in the winter and the weather conditions are tough.
There's a lot of work to be done as the island is over 2.5 acres (1 hectare) and we have no experience in off-grid living, carpentry or building. So any tips or advice are greatly appreciated, as we are planning on doing everything ourselves and transforming the island into our own little paradise. We’ll document every step of the way, starting from smaller builds to finally - an off-grid log cabin.

Alone in the Desert | Abandoned House Saved My LifeLost under the scorching desert sun, she walked for hours — heat burning her skin, the silence pressing in.
Then, like a miracle, she stumbled upon an abandoned house, half-buried in sand.
Inside, dust, cobwebs, and signs of a life long gone. But to her, it was hope.
She cleaned the shelter, patched the damaged roof, and prepared for the cold desert night.
With fire in the old fireplace and a simple meal cooked in silence, the place came alive again.
At night, she launched a flare into the dark sky — a desperate signal for help.
This is not just a story of solitude. It’s a story of survival and gratitude.
This forgotten shelter may have saved her life.

Couple Living Off-Grid in Their DREAM Yurt Home in the Forest – How They Built It + Pros & ConsJill and Charles have created a beautiful off-grid yurt homestead in Vermont, on a forested hillside, with solar power, rainwater collection and a rocket mass heater. But this project didn't come together overnight – it's the result of over 8 years of planning and working towards this dream of theirs!
You can follow and find out more about Jill and Charles's off-grid yurt homestead here:
https://www.youtube.com/@OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods
It all started 8 years ago when they visited Vermont to look at properties and ended up buying a beautiful forested 20 acre piece of land. They went home to Dallas, Texas with a 5-year plan to save up enough money so that they could move onto the land in Vermont and create their off-grid homestead. The plan ended up being extended to 6 years with the purchase of 10 additional acres, but they eventually made it up there!
In the 2 years that they've been on the property, they lived in an RV at first (that was also off-grid with solar and rainwater), while they built their yurt home. The yurt is a 30-foot Pacific Yurt with modern materials (vinyl cover and reflectix insulation) that provides approximately 700 square feet of living space. They finished it inside with a kitchen and enclosed bathroom, and the rest is all open concept living space for the dining area, bedroom, office, and storage.
The yurt was meant to be a quick and affordable home to set up, but it ended up taking quite a lot longer than anticipated, especially because they had to build a post and beam platform and deck to create a flat area where the yurt could be put up, and install all their own systems for heat, rainwater collection, and solar power.
The cost was a lot more than just the cost of the yurt kit. They also had to factor in some big ticket items like the platform and deck, the SIP floor panels, the appliances, the solar and rainwater collection systems, and more!
Now that it's complete, the couple has a beautiful, cozy, round home in the woods where they can enjoy being immersed in the forest, and get to know their neighbours, the birds, bears, coyotes and bobcats. Their next steps include building a covered entrance to the yurt, and planting fruit trees :)

Lyrics:
[Intro]
Kamusta na si kuya
Sana ok lang si ate
Kamusta n'akin pamilya
'Asa isipan ko palagi
[Chorus]
This one's for my people across the globe
Searchin for their highs at the end of the road
Memories of better days
Seem to fade to grey, can you feel my pain
Searchin for a brighter day
Together we can make a change
Looking for a place to call my home
Wishing for a day we all get along
[Verse 1 - Yellow Kid]
wala kong tinuturin bida parehong halaga
akin lakas ay ang akin tala-salitaan^
na nagsasayawan sa tug-tugin na parang ulan
na may araw..
kapangyarihan ng kalikasan,
ngiti'an ang kalangitan, akin sina-salamatan
at tayong mga natitira
sa mundo na wagas baguhin sa tamang simula
tulongan mo ang kapwa mo wag mong gawin tanga
sa pag ikot ng mundo matatamasa mo mga ginawa
[Chorus]
[Verse 2 - Kid Cras]
5 o'clock in the morning, I'm yawning
Thinking about my family back home and I'm hoping
They doing okay
Cos' I don't get to see them as much as I want it
One lesson I learnt in life - gotta cherish every moment
Happy or sad, relationships don't waste it don't be foolish man
Cos' I'd do anything to get my baby back
Cos' I haven't been the same can somebody explain
What it means to live in happiness cos' all I feel is pain
They say it's not too late to start over again
Lost a couple friends wonder how they been
I miss Reina, I miss Nikki, I miss all the girls that kissed me
When I travel out the city I'll be back no need to miss me
I'm just thankful to be alive today
I just pray on my dying day I get to reach the pearly gates
I just wanna be honest and true
For the people still searching this one is for you
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
Kahit ano man bagyo, kaya parin lumaban sa
Anino ng takot, hinde ka dapat magtago
Ka'y tibay ng iyong dating sa entablado
Sabihin mo
Show the world let them know what we fighting for
Together we can make it, we can survive the storm
Overcome any obstacle we unstoppable
Cos' with God it is possible to do the impossible
Mundong puro Conflicto, walang solusyon
So ano ang naturang tanong, magrebolusyon
Baguhin education, palakasin ang fundasyon
Tayo ang boses ng bagong taon at henerasyon
Yeah.
[Chorus + Outro]
Living Off Grid in Portland Jamaica 🇯🇲Greetings everyone! Today we share some fruits a delicious ital pudding ! Cooked on a coal fire ! No oven needed!
Living Off-Grid on a Tiny House Homestead for 6 YearsAriel has been homesteading and living off-grid in a 24'x8' tiny house for 6 years! She grows, forages and preserves as much of her own food as possible, she cuts her own fire wood, carries her own water, generates electricity with solar, and cooks with propane. She is a passionate backpacker and wildlife photographer who works part-time on a ranch in exchange for a place to park her small home, and she also works a variety of jobs to earn money, although her expenses are very low since she isn't paying rent, and since she managed to pay off the tiny house several years ago.

Living Off Grid for 46 Years | Al and his Hydroelectric Water WheelIn this video, I meet with Al (82 years of age) one year after helping him rebuild/refurbish his hydroelectric water wheel. We discuss how the wheel has been performing since, and some of the issues he's faced with it, as well as solutions and plans going forward. Al then gives me a more in-depth view of how he has managed to live on his property in rural Washington state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States for 46 years. A combination of solar power, his water wheel, and a backup generator provide him with off grid power. While a natural spring provides gravity fed drinking water to his main house, as well as his many unique and custom built out-buildings (including a sauna cabin). Al and I conclude our visit by hiking to the highest point on his 40 acre parcel of land to catch a view of Mt St Helens and reminisce about the 1980 eruption.

14 Years Living Off-Grid in a Self-Built Cabin & Farming Tons of Food on the LandStephanie and Joel share their 14-year journey of building a home from reclaimed materials, living off-grid with solar power, and growing a lot of their own food, from fruits and veggies to milk, meat, and honey.
They built their home on shared land using materials they salvaged from the dump, wood from a building they took apart themselves, and whatever free stuff they could get their hands on. They had no electricity in the beginning so they only had candles. Eventually, they got a solar panel and a battery to run lights, and the systems have evolved from there.
They now have a wood cookstove for heat and cooking in the winter, 5 solar panels and 4 lithium batteries for electricity (plus a generator to supplement on cloudy days), a washing machine, a propane fridge and stove for summertime cooking, and a thermostat controlled propane stove so they don't have to get up in the middle of the night to stoke the fire. For water they have a quarry on the land which they draw from to fill a reservoir in their loft. From there, the water is gravity fed into the kitchen and bathroom. Their drinking water comes from a well on the property. The toilet is an Airhead urine diverting toilet.
The cabin has a master bedroom in the loft and a main-floor bedroom that's split into two sleeping spaces for their kids. They have an open-concept kitchen, dining and living room area, and the bathroom is closed in with a beautiful bottle wall. There's also a sunroom they recently added to the front of the house to bring in natural light, passive solar heating, and to grow food in the winter (with the help of LED grow lights).
For work, Joel owns a tree service business, and Stephanie runs an off-grid Airbnb business. You can check out the awesome Pickalotta off-grid cabin here:

Family of 5 Living Off-Grid on a Remote Tropical IslandThis family lives completely off-grid on a remote tropical island called Uepi in the Solomon Islands. They collect rainwater for all of their freshwater needs, they catch fish and grow as much fresh food as they can (including a homemade hydroponic system) on Uepi and on surrounding islands, and at the moment their electricity comes from diesel generators – although they are making the switch to solar power in the next 12 months! For work, the family runs a small island resort where folks can go scuba diving and snorkelling in a beautiful marine environment.

And you can find out more about Uepi Island Resort here:

Jase grew up on the island after his parents fell in love with the Solomons in the '80s and moved there from Australia. Katie visited the island as a volunteer and fell in love with Jase on her trip, and after a long distance relationship, she moved to the island and they've since had 3 children together.
Living on a remote island looks like an absolutely beautiful lifestyle, but it definitely isn't easy. Being isolated means limited options for socializing, it means that everything has to come from very far away, it means a lot of travel to access health care, and it means you're often on your own to figure out problems like why the generator isn't running. It's a lot of work and responsibility to keep things running smoothly all year round.
Luckily, the family has help from a lot of skilled locals from neighbouring islands who work at the resport as chefs, carpenters, housekeepers and in the dive shop.
We loved getting a glimpse at this unique way of life and appreciate Katie and Jase sharing their story with us!

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

Self-Reliant Family Living Off-Grid on a Thriving Homestead for 13 YearsThis family of 5 has worked hard over the past 13 years to make their off-grid homestead dreams a reality. Their yurt home is connected to a straw bale kitchen and garage, they collect rainwater and solar power, and they heat with an indoor wood boiler that provides in-floor heating.
Their homestead includes sprawling gardens that produce a ton of vegetables, and they also raise pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, quail, rabbits and bees for everything from meat and eggs to feta cheese and honey.
In this video, Becca and Jean share a tour of their alternative home, explain their off-grid systems, talk about the financial and permitting hoops they had to jump through, and share the ups and downs of living this lifestyle.

12 YEARS Living Off-Grid on a Sustainable Homestead in a Self-Built Cob HomeBryce and Misty have spent the last 12 years building a cob home, homesteading, living off the grid, and homeschooling their two daughters. They live without a car, so for transportation, they use taxis and bicycles, and they eventually hope to have a cart that their two horses can pull. For food production, they have a permaculture food forest for fruits and vegetables, chinampa-inspired wetland gardens, a cow and a bull for milk, ducks and chickens for eggs, bees for honey, and they also forage and cultivate feral crops.

These two have put in an impressive amount of work setting up their homestead. The house is built with clay that they collected from the wetland area of their property, their well was dug by hand, and everything from the fences to the staircase was made with wood from within a 20km radius of their home.
The cost to build the house was approximately $1,000 CAD. Most of the building materials (the sand, clay, straw, and wood) came from the land, and things like roofing, lumber, and windows they sourced from secondhand and reclaimed sources. Interestingly, they used several different natural building techniques in the home with each new addition. They usually start with a timber frame, and they have used cob, straw bales and wattle and daub, to fill in the spaces between the beams. And they've also explored using green roofs and earth floors.
Since moving to the land, they had two lovely daughters that they homeschool using unschooling and life immersion methods. They learn about food production, natural building, nature, math, reading, and more!
To earn an income, they do a variety of odd jobs including catering, seasonal farm work, a roadside plant stand, and they also receive the childcare benefit that all families in their province receive. Their primary focus is not how to earn more money but rather how to spend less and have more time. They try to produce as much of what they need on the farm.
For electricity, they have solar panels on the roof and a wind turbine (currently non-operational), for water they have a hand-dug well and rainwater collection barrels, for heat they have wood stoves, they have two composting toilets, and a rocket stove to heat water for their bathtub.

Living Off-Grid in a Tiny House Community Built by Self-Reliant CoupleRachael and Cameron are exploring sustainable and affordable housing solutions on a 6-acre piece of land in Boone, NC with the help of their students. Their micro-community is completely off the grid with solar power, rainwater harvesting, composting toilets, and wood stoves. They have built 3 tiny homes so far, and in order to comply with local rules, all of the structures and cabins are temporary.

Woman Living Off-Grid in the High Desert in an ULTRA Tiny Yurt HomeMolly lives off-grid in a tiny yurt on a piece of land that she bought with her two brothers in New Mexico. She bought her yurt secondhand for $2,800 USD including the wood stove. It’s a traditional Mongolian yurt from Groovy Yurts that was handmade and hand painted in Mongolia with natural materials like wood lattice and cotton canvas. The yurt is a circular home that measures 13 feet in diameter so it’s a very tiny house but Molly has organized and decorated the interior beautifully with a small entrance drop zone, a tiny kitchen, a custom loft bed, an open closet space and dresser for storage, a small reading nook, and floating shelves for books, the battery for her solar panels, and her satellite internet. For water, they truck in water from a nearby spring and then use that to fill smaller jugs that they can carry around the property. For a toilet, they have an open-air outhouse. And for bathing, they built an outdoor tub that heats the water with a fire underneath.
You can follow and find out more about Molly’s off-grid life and frequent travels here:

Before moving to a remote property to live a simple life off-grid, Molly experimented with several other alternative lifestyles like long-term travel, van life and truck life, but after a few years she found herself craving some stability and a home base. She still plans to travel but is happy to have the yurt she can come back to.
The experience of living off-grid in this way has made Molly feel more connected to the land, and to nature, and it isn’t as hard as she feared it might be, although there are certain things she says would be nice to have in the future (like an indoor bathroom) and maybe even a small adobe home. The chores do take up a lot of time because everything is done manually, from gathering kindling, chopping wood, and stacking firewood to carrying water around the property to where it will be used, and making a fire to heat the bath water, and keeping an eye on the battery to make sure she has enough electricity. But overall it's been a positive experience!
