Citi: Making a Difference on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South DakotaRockyford Community School, a new and much improved, learning environment, will provide new classrooms to 500 Pre-K to 8th grade students starting with the 2012-2013 school year.
Located 56 miles from Rapid City and 28 miles north of Manderson on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Rockyford Community School, part of the Shannon County School District, will enjoy a $17 million addition that includes a new gymnasium, 13 new classrooms, an updated kitchen and multifunctional areas.
Funding for the school was made through a partnership between Citi Community Capital, Citi's community development lending and investing group, and Dakotas America, a community development group working in rural, highly distressed low-income communities.
Sheenway Education FoundationSince the early 1970s, Sheen Educational Foundation has been providing educational enrichment programs to youth in the greater Watts area. In 2010, Sheen partnered with a charter school to construct a new campus and serve more students. The new charter campus displaced the original Sheen headquarters. Genesis LA provided Sheen with an loan to acquire and renovate a new "Sheenway House" located next to the new charter school.

Reinvestment Fund Project Profile: Pan American Academy Charter SchoolFinancing from The Reinvestment Fund (TRF -- http://www.trfund.com) is supporting the construction of a new facility for the Pan American Academy Charter School in Philadelphia. The school was founded in 2008 by Congreso de Latinos Unidos, a nationally-recognized, nonprofit organization that has been providing social, economic, education and health services to the Latino community in Philadelphia for over 30 years.
The school provides one of the few dual-language education options for Philadelphia's growing Latino population. Pan American Academy Charter School's new facility will be able to accommodate over 700 students in grades K-8, the school's maximum charter enrollment. The new school will be part of a growing Congreso campus, which includes Congreso headquarters and a separate building housing several social service programs.
TRF Project Profile: Freire Charter SchoolIn 2012, The Reinvestment Fund (TRF) provided a loan to Freire Charter School for leasehold improvements to a facility to house a new middle school campus.
In 2010, this Philadelphia charter high school was approved to open a 500-student middle school, doubling its enrollment from 500 students in grades 9-12 to 1,000 students in grades 5-12.
The middle school facility is located in a former Woolworths building in Center City that has stood vacant for 20 years. The facility is located ten blocks away from Freire's current high school, which TRF also helped finance.
TRF Project Profile: The Green SchoolIn 2008, The Reinvestment Fund (TRF -- http://www.trfund.com) helped finance the acquisition and renovation of a former parochial school building to house The Green School of Baltimore, an elementary charter school that uses the environment and community as a context for learning.
TRF's 2008 financing included New Markets Tax Credit eligible capital and a TRF energy loan, which supported energy measures which are expected to lower long-term facility operating costs and perfectly aligns with the Green School's focus on cultivating healthy, active and environmentally conscious students. The facility has a garden where students learn not only how to plant and care for fresh produce but also how to cook delicious, healthy meals that the whole family can enjoy.
In their new space, The Green School has grown to serve 150 elementary students grades K-5 now with a full outdoor playground area and indoor physical education room to help the school continue to keep students active.
