Springfield College Proud to be Partner for Educare SpringfieldSpringfield College is proud to be a partner for Educare Springfield, which celebrated a groundbreaking at the Hickory Street location on Sept. 17.
Educare Springfield, which is slated to open in late 2019 on land provided by Springfield College adjacent to Brookings School, will offer local students an early education model that aims to narrow the achievement gap for children living in poverty. It will provide a full-day and full-year program for up to 141 children from birth to age five each year.

Ron Wyden Tours Head Start Financed by NMTCUnited States Senator Ron Wyden applauded the success of an $18 million investment in federal and state New Markets Tax Credits for Albina Head Start.
The investment—a partnership with National Community Fund, a Community Development Entity affiliated with United Fund Advisors, — will enable Albina Head Start to lower its debt burden and expand services to low-income families. The investment consists of $10 million in federal and $8 million in state New Markets Tax Credits.

Sheenway Education FoundationSince the early 1970s, Sheen Educational Foundation has been providing educational enrichment programs to youth in the greater Watts area. In 2010, Sheen partnered with a charter school to construct a new campus and serve more students. The new charter campus displaced the original Sheen headquarters. Genesis LA provided Sheen with an loan to acquire and renovate a new "Sheenway House" located next to the new charter school.
Girls, Inc.This $18 million New Markets Tax Credit project was funded through the partnership of Clearinghouse CDFI, Banc of America CDE, LLC, USBancorp Community Development Corporation, & Northern California Community Loan Fund.
Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through life-changing programs and experiences that help them navigate gender, economic, and social barriers.
Renovation of a historical building in the Downtown Oakland Historic District into the Simpson Center for Girls created 25 full-time jobs, 35 construction jobs, and increased the number of girls served by 25% annually. The new center offers programs for severely underserved girls ages 5 to 18.

The Children's Campus of KCThe Children's Campus of Kansas City is a multi-use facility that will house service agencies that support families and children. Greater KC LISC and LISC's New Markets Support Company provided $14 million in New Markets Tax Credit to the project. It will open in early 2010.

Street Squash, a New Markets Tax Credit Success StoryStreetSquash, located in Harlem, is an innovative and successful urban youth enrichment program that was founded in 1999. StreetSquash combines academic activities, college preparation, community service, mentoring, and squash for boys and girls ages 9-18 to help them graduate from high school and move on to active and productive lives.
Thanks to $6.5 million in NMTC financing provided by HEDC New Markets, Inc., StreetSquash expanded into a 19,000 square foot facility in Harlem, NY in November 2008. The new facility has allowed StreetSquash to serve more than 750 Harlem public school children each year, providing 4 classrooms and a library, as well as 8 squash courts, a workout area, locker rooms, and administrative offices. StreetSquash was able to expand its after-school program to serve more 160 children annually; provide College Prep Program to 100 students annually; expand the Summer Discovery and Youth Employment Program to serve over 300 students annually; create an Alumni Outreach Program for nearly 100 high school graduates; and launch the Physical Education for Public Schools Program that serves over 750 students annually through daytime squash instruction gym programs.
Now that it has the physical capacity to serve more students, the organization added six full-time positions and fifteen part-time positions − two of which are filled by parents who live in the neighborhood. StreetSquash also doubled its volunteer base to 100 so that it can serve more students. Outside of organizational growth, the new building has increased StreetSquash’s efficiency, bolstered the organization’s external credibility, encouraged cohesion and community building, and improved students’ experiences of their physical surroundings. By investing in a center that expands operations and improves participants’ experiences, StreetSquash serves as a true community asset.
