Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Jupiter from Holst's 'Holst’s The Planets'This year marks the centennial of Holst’s The Planets, a seven-movement orchestral suite, which the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performs May 26-31 under guest conductor Cristian Măcelaru. In this video, the CSO performs the work’s fourth movement, “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity,” full of brass fanfares and fireworks.
One of the most popular classical music works of the last century, The Planets received its U.S. premiere by the CSO on New Year’s Eve 1920, just a month after the work had its world premiere in London. The CSO is revisiting The Planets as part of its season-long retrospective titled “A Legacy of Premieres,” in which the orchestra on nearly every 2015-16 subscription program will perform many of the works introduced over its 125-year history.

New York Philharmonic - Ride of the ValkyriesMarch 9, 2018: Music Director Designate Jaap van Zweden and the Orchestra rehearse the rousing “Ride of the Valkyries” from Wagner’s “Die Walküre” in Beijing’s picturesque National Centre for the Performing Arts — which opened in 2007 and is colloquially known as The Giant Egg — as a possible encore that evening. It’s a good thing, too: the audience demanded more and were treated to this! The March 8 and 9 concerts, presented by China Merchants Bank, opened the Philharmonic’s ASIA 2018 tour.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Night on Bald MountainThe 2016-17 season of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra began triumphantly with Riccardo Muti leading the CSO in Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain, along with Strauss’ tone poem Don Juan and Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 7.
Reviews across the boards were raves. Chicago Tribune critic John von Rhein wrote: “Beginning his seventh season as music director, Muti elicited from his orchestra the kind of electric, yet warmly contoured playing that has marked their partnership at its best. It augurs well for the season.” In the Chicago Sun-Times, critic Hedy Weiss declared: “Working in perfect synchrony, [Muti and the CSO] can conjure the most luscious sound, punctuated by quicksilver emotional shifts and a technical polish that invariably generates heat, as opposed to cold precision.” Lawrence A. Johnson of the Chicago Classical Review said, “Even by local standards, the playing of the orchestra was extraordinary, impressive as much for the many characterful solo contributions as much as the high-sheen ensemble cohesion.”
