Boy falls 7-stories, survives with no broken bonesLandscaping around the pool deck of the 10th floor of the Doubletree Grand Hotel may have saved a 4-year-old boy's life as it cushioned his fall off a balcony on the 17th floor of the hotel. The boy fell off of a balcony around 11am Friday morning, bounced off a palm tree and then hit some shrubs before landing in a small patch of dirt surrounded by concrete. Video of ferry blaze in Baltic Sea as 22 injured in upper deck fireA 650-foot (200-metre) ferry was ablaze in the Baltic Sea on Saturday after an explosion on the upper deck that injured 22 people. Firefighting ships were spraying the vessel with water to keep it from breaking apart and spilling some 170 tonnes of fuel. German officials said the blast appeared to have been a technical mishap. Some 204 passengers and 32 crew were rescued by six ships that moved in to help after the explosion on the Lithuanian-flagged 'Lisco Gloria' around midnight.

Parting the waters, Part 2: Carl Drews on wind setdown researchNCAR researcher Carl Drews discusses the results of a computer modeling study that shows how a sustained wind can temporarily lower water levels (see http://www2.ucar.edu/news/parting-waters-computer-modeling-applies-physics-red-sea-escape-route ).
The research he describes arose out of his master's thesis in atmospheric and oceanic sciences. The research is published in the online journal, PLoS ONE and is part of Drews's larger research project with oceanographer Weiqing Han (University of Colorado) into the impacts of winds on water depths, including the extent to which Pacific Ocean typhoons can drive storm surges. By pinpointing a possible site south of the Mediterranean Sea for a potential Red Sea crossing, the study also could be of benefit to experts seeking to research whether such an event ever took place.
