Bay Area Ballerina Comes of Age | KQED ArtsMany of 18-year-old Miko Fogarty’s friends in Orinda, CA will be entering college in the fall. But not Miko. She is on her way to the United Kingdom to pursue a career as a professional ballerina for the prestigious Birmingham Royal Ballet. It’s the latest leg in an artistic journey that began 13 years ago when as a kindergartner she fell in love with classical dance, and, after years of study with prominent Bay Area ballet teachers, enrolled at the San Francisco Ballet school.

Bay Area Hip Hop: The Next Generation | KQED ArtsIf you are all about Bay Area hip hop and you want to see what’s coming next on the dance front, take a look at Alex Flores and Marthy Galimba (dance names: Prince Ali and Marthy McFlyy). Or maybe you just want to see some amazingly athletic dance moves. Either way, you won’t go wrong with these guys.
They recently became official members of the Renegade Rockers, a legendary Bay Area Dance crew founded in 1983. The Renegades love to test themselves in what they call “battles,” where two dancers face off against each other and judges from the community decide who comes out on top.
Both Alex and Marthy draw inspiration from Renegade Rocker legend Omar Delgado (Dance Name: Roxrite). Omar is a local icon who has won over 82 dance competitions and is also currently a member of Red Bull BC One All Stars, a crew of 10 internationally renowned hip hop dancers.
Despite their strong physical personas, Alex and Marthy are actually couple of introverts, who grew up in rough neighborhoods around a lot of gang violence, and used to release frustration, come to terms with their experiences, and make something good of it all.
