Pat Rocco: Harvey Milk speech in Los Angeles (1978)Summary: Short documentary footage of Harvey Milk (1930-1979), California's first openly gay elected official, at the 8th annual Gay Pride Parade in Los Angeles on July 2, 1978, several months before his assassination. Milk gives a speech at De Longpre Park, railing against Anita Bryant and religious leaders who use religion to support discrimination, as well as the Briggs Initiative. Milk further states that if homosexuals are barred from being teachers (the goal of the Initiative), they will soon be barred from any profession requiring a license or degree. Milk admonishes the crowd to come out to everyone they know. Finally, he asks Jimmy Carter to step forward and defend gay and lesbian rights.

About filmmaker Pat Rocco
Pioneering activist and filmmaker Pat Rocco produced short-form gay erotica in the 1960s that was widely embraced by the gay community, and received positive reviews from the mainstream press. Rocco's prolific output of erotic films slowed in the early 1970s as market preferences shifted toward hardcore fare. In the late 1960s through the 1980s, Rocco shot historically important footage of gay demonstrations, parades, marches, festivals and events, providing some of the only existing moving image documentation of the major beginnings of the gay rights movement in the U.S.
Harvey Milk's radical vision of equality - Lillian FadermanLearn about the life and tragic death of gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk, California’s first openly gay public official.
--
By 1973, Harvey Milk had already been many things: naval officer, high school teacher, bit-part actor and wandering hippie. Starting fresh in San Francisco, his belief in a more personal approach to local government led him to run for office in the heart of American gay culture, the Castro. Lillian Faderman details the tenacity and courage of California's first openly gay public official.

The Assassination of Harvey Milk and George MosconeHarvey Milk and George Moscone were progressive icons in San Francisco, both in 1978 and the present day. Harvey Milk is known throughout the LGBT community as one of the first openly-gay officials to serve in public office, and as an outspoken leader of the gay rights movement. George Moscone led San Francisco into a progressive era that resembled the style of government that San Francisco is infamous for today. Harvey Milk and George Moscone died at the hands of Dan White, a member of the board of supervisors along with Harvey Milk. Dianne Feinstein also weaves her way into this story. It was she who found the body of Harvey Milk after Milk was murdered in cold blood. Feinstein would go on to become mayor of San Francisco and Senator from California, a role she serves in to this day.

Harvey Milk Day Performance | May 22, 2021Once we began Shelter In Place in mid-March, 2020, things simply slowed to a snail’s pace. Even pondering such a thing as singing together was a distant dream. Month after month, we all did everything we could to keep that ember of hope alive. Then, it is as if a veil began to lift. Restrictions were loosening across the country. Suddenly, the possibility of singing outdoors in small groups, distanced and masked began to become a reality. We decided to do something to celebrate Harvey Milk Day on May 22. We didn’t know what that would look like, but we decided to drive that stake in the ground. As the day approached, we found out that the number of singers would not be limited as long as they were distanced and masked. Then, a week before, the mask requirement was lifted.
Hallelujah! So, at 1pm PST on Saturday, May 22, 130 singers gathered on a gloriously sunny day in San Francisco to do the unthinkable – sing together. Our time was short, so we did only the slightest warm up. When 1:00pm hit, we opened up the rusty pipes and let out a most joyful noise! As you will hear, we chose our favorites. We started with the first song the chorus ever sang 43 years ago.
We dedicated one song to those lost to this horrible pandemic. We ended by celebrating its end.
Special thanks to all who made it possible, especially our amazing video/audio producer Marco Solorio.
We hope you will enjoy this mini-concert. And, more than that, we hope you will make plans to come hear us live in December!

Murder at City Hall: The killing of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey MilkOn November 27, 1978 San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were killed by their colleague, Supervisor Dan White. The murder tore San Francisco's political scene apart and made people question whether junk food, Twinkies, could drive someone to murder.

How Harvey Milk Changed the Gay Rights MovementJoin the Club: http://www.dollarshaveclub.com/filmradar
This video essay/documentary hybrid centers around Harvey Milk, and the historical context surrounding the gay rights movement of the time. Using footage from Gus Van Sant's brilliant biopic "Milk", "The Times of Harvey Milk"(the documentary that inspired it) as well as a documentary named "Stonewall Uprising". I think it's an important piece of history that's often overlooked, to look back on the way things were helps us to realize how far we've come, because of people like Harvey Milk standing up for something they believe in.
