The History of Psychiatry and Gay Conversion TherapyIn the 1900s many sought out treatment for their friends, children, family members for homosexuality, but psychiatry and medicine didn’t universally see it has a mental illness. Prominent psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud wrote a letter to a mother who sought treatment for her gay son. Unfortunately this view would soon change in the 1940s after Frued’s death. Other psychoanalysts such as Sandor Rado criticized Freud’s views. He deemed homosexuality as unnatural and ultimately going against nature. Other psychoanalysts began to follow such as Irving Beiber in 1962 who believed the cause was from a distant father and overbearing mother. These new theories introduced a number of “Gay conversion therapies” in which the goal was to reduce homosexual behavior and increase heterosexual behavior.
Homosexuals could be involuntarily committed to psychiatric facilities by their families. They were subject to a number of practices such as castration, aversion therapy. This included taking nausea inducing drugs while watching same sex erotica so they associate nausea with same sex desires, or electroshock while watching the erotica. Other practices included lobotomies where a pick like instrument was inserted through the eye socket and into the brain. Patients were often left severely disabled.
Now, all while this was happening there was growing amount of research that countered the theory of homosexuality as pathology. Researchers found homosexual behavior occurring naturally in a percentage of animals. Also, the research used for the support of conversion therapy concluded homosexuals to have greater psychological disturbances compared to heterosexuals. A problem with those studies were the biases in the population. The participants recruited for those studies were from prison. Evelyn Hooker found no difference in psychological disturbances between straight and gay men, when her study sampled men that weren’t in prison.
This resulted in a split from the psychological community. Many groups who advocated for keeping “Homosexuality” as a mental disorder split and formed small groups such as NARTH, EXODUS and JONAH, continuing conversion therapy.
The years following led to many legal battles and some of these organizations shutting down. In Michael Ferguson vs. Jonah, the New Jersey civil court was sued for deceptive practices. Some patients claimed the therapy not to work, reporting they were still attracted to the same sex. They also had to pay for mainstream therapy for the damages done in conversion therapy. Conservative groups in Welch v. Brown (ban of therapy in CA) fought against the ban of conversion therapy saying that it is a violation of free speech, freedom of religion, and privacy.
Today, the law bans conversion therapy for minors in 5 states: California, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New Jersey, (and D.C). 45 states have no laws on conversion therapy. New York is also included on this list.

After at one point announcing that he had become successfully "ex-gay" by following the teachings of Exodus, Christian retreated from the world, throwing himself even deeper into a strict Christian lifestyle and abandoning elements of his own free-spirited personality that made him the person that he was. At the last minute, Our America producers flew Christian out to attend the confrontation and apology reading meeting with Michael Bussee and Alan Chambers. Garrard Conley's memoir, Boy Erased, is about his time going through gay conversion therapy when growing up as a christian son of a minister in the American South. The book is being released as a Hollywood film later this year. Garrard is being played by Lucas Hedges, the film also stars Troye Sivan, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman. Apparently people can smell Oscars!
I think this is a hopeful interview, even though Garrard went through something so difficult. He is living proof that you can come through the end of something like the ex gay movement and not just survive, but thrive.

Conversion Therapy Documentary - WRD 112WRD 112 Group Documentary
We Went To Gay Conversion Therapy Camp (Part 1/3)Watch Part 2 now on VICE: http://bit.ly/Gay-Conversion-P2
Conversion therapy is the practice of "curing" gay people by trying to turn them straight through counseling and lifestyle restrictions. The practice dates back to the early Freudian period, when homosexuality was considered pathological and attempts to treat it were deemed appropriate. Today, however, homosexuality has been removed from the American Psychiatric Association's list of mental disorders, and conversion therapy is considered ineffective, harmful, and potentially deadly.
Regardless of a nationwide battle toward the acceptance of same-sex marriage and equal rights for gay people, conversion therapy is still a problem, and it's being practiced every single day in the United States and throughout the world.
In this special report, VICE gets exclusive access to one of the hundreds of gay-conversion-therapy organizations, groups, and sessions in the United States. At the Journey into Manhood program, men pay more than $600 to attend a weekend retreat where they participate in exercises and activities the staff members claim will help them battle their same-sex orientation. The only qualification to become a staff member is to have successfully completed the program.
The report meets with the founder of reparative therapy, Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, who is illegally practicing on minors in the State of California, and investigates the controversial legal battle to fight conversion therapy for individuals under 18 years of age. We also travel to the annual Gay Christian Network Conference, speak with former "ex-gay" leaders including John Smid of Love in Action, who is now married to his gay partner, and hear the grueling stories of the individuals who have survived this brutal practice.

Chinese LGBT activist John bravely goes undercover to report on ‘conversion clinics’ who claim they can ‘cure’ gay people. Almost fifteen years after the Chinese Psychiatric Association stopped classifying homosexuality as a mental illness, unproven treatments, including electric shock therapy, are still being prescribed. John tells us that according to Confucius, ‘having children is the most important thing a person can do for their parents’ and, that it is often parents who submit their children for these unproven conversion treatments.
The Psychological Harm of Gay Conversion Therapy | Sheldon HelmsGay conversion therapy is a psychologically harmful practice that can lead to suicide which tries to change gay people straight. Religions use prayer and pseudoscience for their own agendas. Medical groups and psychologists have come out against the use of gay conversion therapy, but it's still legal in many states across the US.
Sheldon Helms describes the history of religious and some medical community's attempts to define homosexuality as an illness and to make gays go straight.
As our country tackles the issues of marriage equality, gays in the military and the inclusion of gays and lesbians into mainstream society, and as Russia and other nations enforce laws limiting the rights of their gay and lesbian citizens, fringe religious and therapeutic organizations have operated mostly in the shadows. Organizations like NARTH use an improper understanding of the DSM 5 to push their agenda of gay to straight therapy.

Mormon Stories #625: Surviving Reparative Therapy with Alex Cooper Pt. 1 (Feat. Tyler Glenn)This is a recording of my interview with Alex Cooper recorded on March 16, 2016 at Velour in Provo, Utah. Alex Cooper, along with Dr. Joanna Brooks, are the co-authors of the new book Saving Alex. Alex was accompanied in this interview by her attorney, Paul Burke. We were also honored to have Tyler Glenn (Neon Trees) perform three musical numbers for us on this special night.
A description of the book follows:
When Alex Cooper was fifteen years old, life was pretty ordinary in her sleepy suburban town and nice Mormon family. At church and at home, Alex was taught that God had a plan for everyone. But something was gnawing at her that made her feel different. These feelings exploded when she met Yvette, a girl who made Alex feel alive in a new way, and with whom Alex would quickly fall in love.
Alex knew she was holding a secret that could shatter her family, her church community, and her life. Yet when this secret couldn’t be hidden any longer, she told her parents that she was gay, and the nightmare began. She was driven from her home in Southern California to Utah, where, against her will, her parents handed her over to fellow Mormons who promised to save Alex from her homosexuality.
For eight harrowing months, Alex was held captive in an unlicensed “residential treatment program” modeled on the many “therapeutic” boot camps scattered across Utah. Alex was physically and verbally abused, and many days she was forced to stand facing a wall wearing a heavy backpack full of rocks. Her captors used faith to punish and terrorize her. With the help of a dedicated legal team in Salt Lake City, Alex eventually escaped and made legal history in Utah by winning the right to live under the law’s protection as an openly gay teenager.
Alex is not alone; the headlines continue to splash stories about gay conversion therapy and rehabilitation centers that promise to “save” teenagers from their sexuality. Saving Alex is a courageous memoir that tells Alex’s story in the hopes that it will bring awareness and justice to this important issue. A bold, inspiring story of one girl’s fight for freedom, acceptance, and truth.
The 'culture war' of gay conversion therapy - Victoria DerbyshireGay conversion therapy is a fiercely-contested topic - advocates claim it's not harmful but it's been condemned by UK health organisations. BBC's Benjamin Zand gained exclusive access to a seminar in London which looked at controversial gay conversion therapies. There had been calls for the conference, which was billed as "exploring unwanted same-sex attractions", to be banned - with campaigners saying there should be no place in the UK for people to teach that being gay is something that's wrong and should be cured. Earlier this month President Obama called for an end to 'gay conversion therapies' in the States.
In the UK - gay conversion is NOT illegal - but various health organisations - including NHS England and the Royal College of Psychiatrists - describe the treatment as "potentially harmful and unethical". So should it be banned?
