Taking us beyond the sensational "Attack of the Killer Lesbians" headlines, blair dorosh-walther's provocative documentary pulls back the curtain on a tragic miscarriage of justice.
 

In New York City's West Village in 2006, four gay African-American women were brutally assaulted by a stranger whose unwanted sexual advances they'd just spurned. In defending themselves, they also unwittingly left themselves vulnerable to draconian prison sentences that wrested them from their supportive New Jersey families. dorosh-walther returns to the scene of their alleged crime, using security footage to condemn the deplorable conduct of unscrupulous reporters and callous police officers. With a deep compassion for its subjects tempering its outrage over the indignities they've suffered, the film poses a troubling question: How would have this unfolded had it been four straight white women instead?

The screening on Sunday, June 15th at 12:30 pm will also serve as the launch to the UN Free and Equal Global Film Series and includes a conversation with the filmmakers and UN representatives to discuss these issues and the power of film to combat violence and discrimination. At that time, homosexuality was considered a peripheral issue in the socialist GDR; the nuclear family constituted the center of social society. Out in East Berlin, tells the impressive-to-absurd personal histories of gay men and lesbians in GDR, until the fall of the Berlin Wall. The experiences of lesbians and gays, on the path to an out sexual identity, share one specific and sinister perspective: they are accompanied by the watchful eye of the Ministry of State Security (Stasi), which recorded their actions in the bedroom and in innumerable personal files. Open Up to Me Trailer Maarit (Leea Klamola) has successfully managed to live what she considers a 
double life – a male body transformed into an attractive and intelligent woman. 
Maarit’s new life and body have come with a considerable price, as many 
transgendered individuals have discovered. An estranged wife and daughter, the 
feeling of being a stranger in a familiar but cold world, and a nagging conscience to 
confess her sexual identity to would-be employers and those who try to get too close are 
but a few of the burdens Maarit must bear. Most of all she longs to revive the relationship 
with her daughter Pinja (Emmi Nivala), but Pinja’s mother wants nothing to do with 
Maarit. 
 
Her life take an unexpected turn the day her employer, a therapist, leaves town on an 
emergency and entrusts Maarit to secure the office after she is done cleaning it. Maarit 
can’t help but to slightly overstep her bounds once the therapist leaves and explore for 
a few minutes a taste of this intriguing profession. A man (Peter Franzén) in the midst of 
a marital crisis enters unexpectedly seeking solace from the absent therapist but finding 
only Maarit, whose compassionate nature compels her to try to help the man. The two 
quickly find that they share some common interests, especially soccer, a sport which was a 
significant part of Maarit’s past life. 
 
Maarit’s natural sense of sexual curiosity leads her into a new realm of temptation and 
quickly learns that all is not what it seems with this man, who turns out to have deep 
inhibitions of his own and contends with elements of his professional and personal life 
in which Maarit becomes dangerously entwined. Past events clash with the present, and 
Maarit’s life becomes a turbulent whirlwind. Not one to live an existence of servitude 
to the expectations of a regimented society, she makes the bold decision to come to 
complete terms with the world around her and reconcile with those for whom she truly 
cares, and in doing so proves that true character is measured from the inside out. A gritty 
and emotional film, Open Up to Me is an exceptionally well-written and directed film that 
has made its North American premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

MyMy (14mins, 2014, Dir. Anna Helme) Trailer In a mythic cyberfeminist universe, a frustrated young man yearns for affinity and connection. In this age of digital avatars, he crafts a version of himself that is far more corporeal - by stitching together parts of himself to become his own cyborg twin, embracing the radical potential to create the self. However his new clone has been corrupted by a techno-magick virus. This Other self embodies a dangerous idea: that there are parts of ourselves beyond our control. 
 
This lo-fi sci-fi short film is an experimental hybrid of documentary, fiction and performance art. The story plays out in an affective cinematic mode, largely based on a lexicon of imagery and gesture. It features two transgender men, playing a very queer version of their own characters as they perform aspects of themselves onscreen. Throughout the film they are haunted by a chimera, a post-human personification of the desires, fears and possibilities that form who we might be in the future. 
 
The film features a compelling cast of Sydney queer artists and performers. Jackson Stacy is a sculpture and media artist whose work includes The Testosterdome commissioned for Nextwave 2014, Vincent Silk is a writer of poetic science fiction and a craft-maker. Justin Shoulder is an acclaimed performance artist, whose shows include "The River Eats" at Carriage Works in 2013. He is currently curating with Glitter Militia "NightCraft" for Art Bar at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney.

Between 1975 and 1983 a new kind of film could be seen in French cinema : home-grown gay pornography. The films were shot in 16mm and most of them were passed and given certificates by the CNC (National Cinema Centre). They were screened in a small number of Parisian cinemas dedicated to gay pornographic films : Le Dragon, La Marotte and Le Hollywood Boulevard as well as several in the provinces. They were essentially the work of three production companies : Les Films de La Troïka (Norbert Terry), AMT Productions (Anne-Marie Tensi) and Les Films du Vertbois (principally Jacques Scandelari). The genre met an untimely end with the advent of video, the last being made in 1983 "Mon ami, mon amour (My friend, my lover)". Since then, gay pornography has not been screened in French cinemas.

This film is the result of five years of painstaking research and investigation. It features extensive interviews with the directors and actors illustrated by numerous extracts from their films. "Mondo Homo: A Study of French Gay Porn in the 70′s" is an opportunity to discover the hitherto forgotten yet memorable story of the pioneers of French gay cinema.

"LIMITED PARTNERSHIP" Trailer Our film, "Limited Partnership," is the little known personal story of Tony Sullivan and Richard Adams who, in 1975, became one of the first same-sex couples to be legally married in the world. Because Tony is Australian, they applied for a U.S. green card based on their marriage, but were denied in an official INS letter that stated “You have failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots.” Outraged at the tone, tenor and politics of this letter, the couple filed the first federal lawsuit seeking equal treatment for a same-sex marriage in U.S. history. Our film recounts their 40-year struggle to stay together, which parallels the entire history of the LGBT marriage and immigration equality movements, right up to the historic U.S. Supreme Court rulings last year.

Legendary masked balls at the Theater am Neumarkt in Zurich provided 800 visitors from all over Europe with a secret and safe space to act out their 'otherness' in a self-determined way. As most of the world moves forward toward gay equality, Russia is seemingly heading backward. Antigay sentiment and legislation are spreading rapidly throughout the country. In 2013, the Russian parliament passed a ban on so-called "gay propaganda" that effectively makes nearly any public discussion of gay equality a crime. The city of Moscow has outlawed Gay Pride parades for the next 100 years. Adoption of Russian children is forbidden to citizens of any foreign country that permits gay marriage. And legislation is now being considered that would permit the Russian government to remove gay people's children from their homes. The Kremlin has chosen the LGBT community as its scapegoat in a populist campaign against supposedly decadent "Western" values, and there are ominous signs of much worse to come. Violent attacks against Russian gays or suspected gays are more and more common. Videos of young LGBT people being taunted and tortured have been widely distributed on the Internet.

Those are the stories that get the headlines, but there is much more to the Russian LGBT men and woman I have met. It is my hope that this documentary will educate viewers to their reality.
