Joel & Ethan Coen - Shot | Reverse ShotHow do you film a conversation? Most likely, you’re going to block the actors, set up the camera, and do shot/reverse shot. But where do you put the camera? What lens do you use? And how do you cut back and forth? Today, I consider the Coen brothers — Joel & Ethan — and see how these choices lend a particular feel to their version of shot/reverse shot.

Memories of Murder (2003) - Ensemble StagingHow do you emphasize to the audience that something is important? Well, you could always cut to a close-up, but how about something subtler? Today I consider ensemble staging — a style of filmmaking that directs the audience exactly where to look, without ever seeming to do so at all. NO SPOILERS.
Eight Ways to Get the Audience to Look at a Character:
1) Let Them Speak
2) Make Them Brighter or Bring Them Closer
3) Let Them Move (Especially Hands or Eyes)
4) Put Them in the Center of Frame
5) Turn Them Towards the Lens
6) Separate Them from the Group
7) Isolate Them by Moving the Camera
8) Have Other People Look at Them

BOSCPUG: Zack Arnold - GO FAR: The Christopher Rush StoryZack Arnold, editor of the hit USA Network series Burn Notice, discusses the completion of his first documentary, GO FAR: The Christopher Rush Story. Presented at the Boston Creative Pro User Group on August 22, 2013 in the Bright Family Screening Room at The Paramount Center at Emerson College.
The purpose of this film is simple: To tell Christopher's amazing story and share his GO FAR program with those that it can truly help. In life, Chris was incredibly accomplished, optimistic, spiritual, and inspirational to everyone that knew him. He developed his GO FAR program just before his death and was unable to share it with the world. With this film, Chris' message and legacy can live on through his teachings. Chris was an incredibly passionate advocate for the disabled, and his goal was very simple - for people to understand that having a physical disability does not necessarily mean having a mental one. After viewing this film, those with disabilities will have an example for how to achieve their goals in life, no matter the obstacles. And those without disabilities will gain a new perspective on the amazing abilities those with disabilities can possess.
To learn more about GO FAR: The Christopher Rush Story, visit: http://www.gofarmovie.com/
Zack Arnold has been a professional editor for 15 years. His background includes editing feature films, scripted dramatic television, documentaries, theatrical trailers, and DVD bonus content. He considers himself genre-agnostic. He is also just finishing his directorial debut of the documentary film GO FAR: The Christopher Rush Story.
Zack's big break came shortly after winning several awards for editing the high-octane action web series "The Bannen Way" for Sony Pictures. He was hired onto the hit USA Network series "Burn Notice" where he has been a staff editor for the last four seasons. During his hiatus he edited an episode of "Glee," and his most recent job was editing a Chinese feature film, "My Lucky Star," spoken in Mandarin.

I made it as part of a personal project. It is the conclusion to a private film history class I taught. I felt the best way to end the class was to evoke just a bit of the magic that the movies have brought to us.
Quentin Tarantino On Making MoviesThe Charlie Rose Show (21 December 2012)
Quentin Tarantino, the most distinctive writer-director in Hollywood these days, turns 50 years old today.
He grew up in L.A. and worked as a teen behind the counter at a video store, where he devoured everything he could learn about the cinema. He famously described his training: "People ask if I went to film school, and I tell them, 'No - I went to films.' "
In 1992, he wrote the screenplay for "Reservoir Dogs," an ensemble heist movie built around blood-soaked action sequences and the type of hard-boiled dialogue that felt like updated Raymond Chandler. His screenplays for other people's movies, such as "True Romance" and "Natural Born Killers," continued to develop his reputation as a writer.
The success of "Reservoir Dogs" set the stage for "Pulp Fiction," which created a sensation. It gave John Travolta his career back, gave Samuel L. Jackson his iconic role, and earned Tarantino an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
"Jackie Brown" followed, built around wonderful performances by Pam Grier and Robert Forrester, and then it was "Kill Bill," a revenge epic that was so spectacular it had to be released in two parts - wall to wall filled with extraordinary action scenes and fascinating soliloquies.
He rewrote World War II in "Inglorious Basterds" and last year he won another Oscar for his screenplay for "Django Unchained."
We can't wait to see what he gives us next.

Staircases to Nowhere: Making Stanley Kubrick's 'The Shining'Endorsed by The Kubrick Estate and Warner Brothers - the only modern documentary about The Shining to have this honour! Tweeted about by the British Film Institute and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences! This is the oral history story of the making of Stanley Kubrick's horror masterpiece 'The Shining'.

In October 2012 we made a 17-minute oral history using five interviews from The Elstree Project, an oral history project designed to record, preserve and share the memories of people who have worked at the studios of Elstree and Borehamwood. In under six months it received over 100,000 hits and was shared on numerous blogs and websites. We weren't expecting such a response, so when we realised how popular the short was, we looked to see what other content we had in our archive and who else we could ask to interview.

Now we present the full story, at 55-minutes in length, and with contributions from nine crew members who worked on the film and Stanley Kubrick's widow, Christiane. We believe this is the most in-depth exploration into the making of "The Shining" on film, from the perspective of those who actually worked on the production.

Interviewees are:
Brian Cook - 1st AD
Jan Harlan - Producer
Christiane Kubrick - Wife of Stanley Kubrick
Mick Mason - Camera Technician
Ray Merrin - Post-Production Sound
Doug Milsome - 1st AC and Second Unit Camera
Kelvin Pike - Camera Operator
Ron Punter - Scenic Artist
June Randall - Continuity
Julian Senior - Warner Bros. Publicity

The interviews in this film were recorded over a period of three years, as part of The Elstree Project, and with eight students getting the chance to gain live work experience as part of their undergraduate degree course in Film and Television in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Hertfordshire.

The Elstree Project is a partnership between Howard Berry of the University and Bob Redman and Paul Welsh MBE who run the volunteer group Elstree Screen Heritage. Please consider contributing to the project, by using the "tip jar" feature on this video, and help us make more videos like this.

We would like to thank all of our interviewees, and an extra thanks to Jan Harlan for his help and assistance, as well as Lee Unkrich for his encouragement and assistance with research. We would also like to thank Steven Adams, Associate Dean (Research) and Judy Glasman, Dean, in the School of Creative Arts.
New Discovery in Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING: THE SHONE REPORThttp://www.zerozerotwo.org/KUBRICK/KUBROLOGY/MAZEgate.html
A Subliminal Audio Insert found in Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING. The sound of Kubrick himself calling out the word "SHONE" (which is the past tense of the word SHINE) in a quick, barely audible report. This "report" is heard 16 times in the first third of the film.
The 16 "SHONE REPORTS" are arranged strategically to label certain THEMES and to identify certain NUMBERS and NUMBER PATTERNS.
This video is a partial analysis meant primarily to introduce, identify, and catalog the 16 SHONE REPORTS - and also to demonstrate that they are intelligently arranged with a purpose... that is, that they are NOT random.
A more comprehensive analysis of their purpose will follow in a subsequent analysis.
