Weed control using landscape fabric and mulch - UC IPMMost landscape plantings include turfgrass, bedding plants, herbaceous perennials, shrubs, and trees. The great variety of species and soil types creates the need for a variety of weed management options. A common technique to suppress weed growth is the use of mulch. The most common types of mulch are bark and other wood products and black plastic or landscape fabric materials. This video shows how to install a landscape fabric topped by an organic mulch.

E commerce in agriculture- 7 Tips to Grow Sales in Food and AgriBusinessAgri e-commerce provides an opportunity to streamline the agricultural value chain and reduce inefficiencies in the distribution of farm produce. It enables farmers to bypass several intermediaries, resulting in higher income for the farmers, reduced wastage, and the potential to deliver fresher produce to customers.
New e-commerce platforms, combined with delivery services, are providing farmers with access to new markets. Learning how to trade online and take up other digital tools elevate small-scale agricultural producers to a new level. In India, e-commerce tool is helping the informal sector grow through timely provision of information and geo-location of products, enables a digital payment system, and offers transportation service options.

E-Commerce Solutions for Direct-Marketing FarmsSpeaker: Michael Parker, Farm Generations Cooperative
Though many direct-marketing farms had been adopting e-commerce sales platforms prior to the pandemic, in 2020 this trend accelerated dramatically. But a crisis should not decide long-term business strategy, especially for something as important as the way your customer buys your products. In this workshop recorded during the 2021 OEFFA conference Michael Parker
presents a framework that can help you choose the e-commerce platform that's right for your marketing strategy, and will highlight success stories of farmers who have recently made the transition to online sales.
Recorded during 42nd Annual OEFFA conference, February 10-15, 2021

Farmigo brings farmer's market to youHere's an interesting idea. http://www.farmigo.com/ helps you get food right from farmers direct to you. Online Farmers Market | Farmigo | Gotham GreensFarmigo is an online farmers market where users can find fresh vegetables and fruits, dairy products including unique cheeses, locally caught fish, day-of baked bread, and pantry items like granola and other snacks.
“Basically, it’s a way for you to buy all of your fresh produce, meat, dairy, baker and fisherman related stuff, directly from the person who grew it or made your food,” says Benzi Ronen, Farmigo’s CEO and founder.
Gotham Greens, an urban agriculture company, is one of the small businesses that works with Farmigo. Gotham Greens utilizes four commercial-scale rooftop greenhouses in New York City and Chicago for its production. They focus primarily on leafy greens and herbs because they’re the things that travel the furthest, says Nicole Baum, marketing manager at Gotham Greens.

Proper Mulching Around TreesA collaboration between Corliss Bros. and Coast of Maine has resulted in the production of a video on proper mulching techniques and the dangers of over-mulching, creating the mulch volcanoes so prevalent (and detrimental) in today's landscapes
Effective MulchingProper mulching is very beneficial for landscapes, but one of the worst mistakes you can make when caring for a landscape is overmulching. For more information on the benefits of properly mulching, visit http://www.davey.com
Shawn Fitzgerald, a Davey Tree Service expert and Landscape Horticulturist, discusses the importance of properly mulching and the benefits that you and your trees will reap from it.
When mulch is piled up against the trunk of the tree, it creates excessive moisture, which in turn creates fungus and disease. It also gives insects a place to harbor.
We want to pull the mulch away from the tree so it is not against the trunk. By pulling the mulch away we are mimicking the wild and putting the tree back into a natural setting.
Trees that are not mulched correctly can contain enough excess mulch to be used for up to three other trees.
Moving mulch farther away from the stem of the tree will help to reduce the chance for insect or disease. Increasing the drip line will also help to reduce the chance for string trimmer or mower damage.
Contact your local, professionally trained arborist for a complete site inspection. Always remember that proper mulching is very beneficial to your property and your budget!

How to Properly Apply Nitrogen FertilizerGary Hergert, University of Nebraska Extension Soil and Nutrient Management Specialist. Irrigation and Nitrogen Management user education certification program.
Nitrogen cycle in the soilNitrogen undergoes transformations in the soil depending on the chemical composition of the nitrogen applied. Learn more about Yara at http://www.yara.com/sustainability/climate/index.aspx
While nitrate is taken up directly by plants, ammonium and urea first need to be transformed into nitrate. Transformation losses are lowest with nitrate and highest with urea. All the nitrogen in the soil, whether it was applied as urea, ammonium or nitrate, ends up as nitrate before plants take it up.
If nitrate is applied directly, then losses from the transformation from urea to ammonium and ammonium to nitrate are avoided.

How Legacy Nutrients Affect Farm Conservation MeasuresFull proceedings available at: http://www.extension.org/72868
There has been a tremendous amount of activity and funding of conservation programs with regional and watershed-specific cost-share initiatives. While there have been some successes, water quality response in many areas has not been as great as expected. This has led many to question the efficacy of these measures and to call for stricter land and nutrient management strategies. In many cases, this limited response has been due to the legacies of past management activities, where sinks and stores of phosphorus along the land-freshwater continuum mask the effects of reductions in edge-of-field losses of phosphorus.
The Role of Phosphorus Management - Dr. Andrew Sharpley - January 30, 2015Recent high profile harmful algal bloom outbreaks have centered increased attention on agriculture’s role in contributing phosphorus (P) to impaired surface waters and the effectiveness of current and future conservation strategies designed to mitigate such losses. Research on the sources and pathways of P loss predates most of us, yet we still deal with unintended consequences of some conservation measures. To a large extent, these concerns are fueled by a public debate of the wise use of conservation funding, an underlying desire for “quick fixes,” and an underestimation of the legacies of prior P and nitrogen (N) management. These problems are not unique to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed nor are our options for future P management. As a result, lessons can be learned and regional and national research, demonstration, and extension efforts can foster and guide a road map for successful P conservation.

Pruning Bartlett Pear to Optimize Fruit QualitySpeaker: Dr. Stefano Musacchi, Associate Professor & Endowed Chair, Tree Fruit Physiology and Management, Washington State University
Affiliation: WSU Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center, Wenatchee, WA 98801-1230
Synopsis: Dr. Musacchi introduces the concept of organ competition as it relates to both vegetative growth and fruit production and how pruning influences these responses. He introduces three new terms including brindilla (one year old shoot with terminal flower bud), Tira savia (pruning technique to induce a strong response in the apical part of the branch and minimize suckering and production of blind wood), and chicken paw or zampe di gallo (an old spur formation that produces small fruit when they become too weak). He emphasizes the fact that small-sized flower buds result in small-sized fruits. He also introduces the five different tree growth habits of fruit bud production for pear cultivars. Bartlett is Type 1 which is comprised primarily of 2-year-old branches with brindilla and spurs. Dr. Musacchi speaks about pruning spindle trees and the importance of bending branches to a maximum of a 45-50 degree angle from the vertical axis to avoid weak branches and the production of blind wood. He also introduces the concept of dynamic or renewal pruning and a three-year cycle. This involves a rotational strategy to produce new wood, develop 1-year-old wood and produce fruit on 2-year-old wood. He emphasizes the importance of using primarily 2 or 3-year-old wood that is fairly close to the central axis of the tree for production of large, high-quality fruit. Dr. Musacchi demonstrates using both girdling and notching to remove apical dominance and stimulate lateral branching in 2-year-old wood to avoid the production of blind wood. Dr. Musacchi introduces the practice of using growth regulators to influence tree response to girdling and notching (e.g., combination of gibberellin plus cytokinin). Dr. Musacchi speaks about the 30 percent rule (remove branches attached to main axis when their diameter exceeds 30 percent of the diameter of the main axis). He notes that the tip of the branch should be higher than its insertion in the main axis. Dr. Musacchi demonstrates how to prune young spindle trees and also how to manage the top of the tree. He also demonstrates how to manage trees that are different heights going down the tree row. Dr. Musacchi also demonstrates spindle pruning of mature trees and the need to make the three-year cycle of renewal pruning. Finally, he introduces the bi-axis (or Bibaum) training system to reduce excess vigor and to double the number of axes in the row without doubling the number of the trees.

Being self-sufficient goes beyond trying to have a self-sufficient home and homestead. We want to be self-sufficient even outside of our home, so one of the things we’ve been focusing on is learning what edible plants are in our area, and how we might be able to capitalize on those for free food! More specifically, it’s HUCKLEBERRY SEASON and we’ve been trying to gather as many huckleberries as possible to stock our pantry with! We made this short video to share with you more information about how we are foraging in the forest and then how we’re turning our finds into delicious goods that we can barter with or give as gifts!

This summer Jesse and I had the opportunity (or we made the opportunity, rather) to collect hundreds of pounds of consisting of over twelve different types! Our challenge was that we don’t eat a lot of fruit itself in our day-to-day diet, nor do we eat much bread or grains which are things typically associated with using up jams, so we had to get creative. In this video we’ll share the ways we came up with to preserve our fruit, including some pretty unique ways!

Earlier this year we decided to dive into composting 101 and get started with our very first compost pile. Despite the concept being incredibly simple, there is so much information out there on how to start a compost pile that it was still overwhelming. So, we decided to not think to deeply about it and just get started! That’s what we want to show you in this video - just how easy it is to start a compost pile and make compost. Once you have the basics down, there are likely ways you can improve on your methods, but getting started is a piece of cake! We hope you get some helpful tips in this video!

How to prune figs in a cool climate for first (breba) crop fig productionThis video describes a pruning system that maximizes production of breba crop figs in a climate too cool to ripen main crop figs. This training system allows the grower to easily keep the tree small and manageable. Made by Bob Duncan of Fruit Trees and More demonstration orchard and nursery near Victoria BC, Canada.
Training Young TreesYoung trees should be structurally pruned, or trained, in the first 5 years after planting, or as early as possible, to minimize tree or branch failure later in life. This vital procedure is often skipped because people don't know why it's important or how to do it. In this video, learn the value of structural training and the simple 5 steps. The language is simple enough for home gardeners, but professionals new to structural training may also find this useful.

Blackmoor Nurseries is part of Blackmoor Estate in Hampshire which has been run by the Selborne family for several generations.
At Blackmoor we are very proud about our heritage and history, and we're absolutely passionate about our fruit plants. We have been growing them at our Hampshire based estate for over 85 years.
All of our staff have been trained to the highest level in both the growing and packing of our plants and we all strive to produce top quality fruit trees and soft fruit plants. All orders are subject to rigorous quality tests at every stage of growth, and throughout the processes of lifting to packing. Roots are soaked and covered before shipping which means that each plant reaches the customer in prime condition.
Our customer service team are all Blackmoor Nursery people and are happy to provide expert advice either by phone or email. They are industry experts and are always happy to share their knowledge and tips about how to get the very best from growing fruit.
A great deal of time has been put into the design of our website to provide all the relevant product information and ease of ordering. Our system keeps our customers informed of their individual order progress right up to the day of the delivery. And, our 'How to Video' section on the site has been a huge success in helping our customers to get the very best from their fruit plants. We are planning to add to these educational clips in the near future.
Finally, we source the best courier service, ensuring our orders are delivered on time and in the excellent condition that the package has left the nursery in.

Summer Pruning Fruit Trees 2015Tom shows you his quick size-control fruit tree pruning method.
Tree Pruning BasicsMy name is Connie Kratzke, and I work for Kahnke Brothers Tree Farm in Plato, MN. During the nine years that I have worked for this company, I have become Certified as a Professional by the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association and a Landscape Specialist by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. This video shows viewers how to identify water sprouts, suckers, inward growers and crossing branches. These troublesome limbs are removed at their "branch collars". Branch collars were originally identified by Dr. Alex Shigo as containing special cells that are responsible for rapid healing. When arborists cut outside of these areas, the pruning wounds heal quickly; preventing insects and diseases from getting in. This video does not cover formative pruning or restorative pruning. My intention is to show home gardeners the basics of tree-friendly pruning. Below are some helpful links:

How to Prune Fruit Trees: Avocado, Apple, Nectarine, Plum, Pomegranate, Pear, Cherry, FigPruning Fruit Trees Made Easy. I cover all aspects of fruit tree pruning. If you have an Avocado, Apple, Nectarine, Fig, Pomegranate, Pear, Cherry, Plum or any other fruit tree and want to prune it you may want to bookmark this video. I am not boasting but there really is a lot of valuable, detailed information in this short video.
I cover which tools you'll need, like Felco pruners and loppers. How to use isopropyl alcohol to stop spreading diseases from one tree to another. How to properly plant a fruit tree so it doesn't drown or die. I explain the difference between central leader pruning, modified leader pruning and vase style pruning. Why it is important to remove downward growing branches, inward growing branches and crossing branches. How to avoid tree girdling. What to do with a frozen growing tip. How to sculpture a tree's shape and the importance of proper fertilizing. And why to use your small tree branches as fuel for a rocket stove.

Rubbermaid Shed in back yardBuilt this Rubbermaid plastic shed in the back yard (7 feet x 7 feet). The big victory was building the foundation on such a sloping lot.

Install the Foundation How to Build a ShedInstall the Foundation How to Build a Shed
The foundation gonna start by building the outside perimeter of the floor frame
0:04will move that frame into position
0:07locate exactly where we want the shed squared up once we establish where to
0:11dig the holes would move the frame model the way and start digging will fully
0:16explain how to build the floor system in the next chapter but for now all we need
0:20are two by eight cut to length and width of the shed you can get this link from
0:24your plan laid the perimeter Joyce are on the ground then they'll them together
0:29with 12 Dior 16 D galvanized fasteners were singer's
0:34other use the box to position your shed exactly where you want it relation to
0:39the house and the yard cross measure to roughly square the box and place the
0:45concrete blocks in the corners to establish places to remove the grass
0:48before the box I check for level from corner to corner this gives me a rough
1:00idea of how deep to dig for each block it's pretty obvious by looking at the
1:05highest part of the of the ground here but we use the level of check to make
1:09sure that that's where we're going to start from you don't want to start from
1:12the low part of the ground and try to work your way up because you'll find
1:16yourself digging very far down so we work from the highest spot in Doral Ale
1:20from the highest spot down to the lower spot that way toward easier to add
1:24blocked and it is to dig out or set the floor joists box aside and start digging
1:31I like to use a helper with the shovel to do most of the digging we're just
1:38going down below the topsoil topsoil is only 45 inches that's all we're going to
1:45go the soil beneath the topsoil here's gravel and water troubles right through
1:50it very easily so it doesn't do justice retain water retain water and it froze
1:55then it expands quite a bit but seeing that it's a lot of gravel the water goes
2:00right through it now you can either put a bunch of block there and build it up
2:05from there but I find it a little easier to grade it
2:08using stone left and right back and forth when we put the frame back on to
2:25position it right where it needs to go if the bottom of the block is above
2:31grave had enough crush zone around the edges to prevent the block from shifting
2:35over time
2:36any size crushed on homework to support the blocks as long as it swelled raining
2:40here I'm using a three-quarter inch size right now we're just gonna get a rough
2:45level again we're starting with this side on the right that's the highest
2:50point just putting a huge straight edge from one to the next level list up a
2:58little bit just put your weight ya star playa a little bit
3:04work around the perimeter from the highest block taking the time to ensure
3:09level foundation saves the headache down the road trying to straighten things up
3:13measure that and were either gonna add more stone or we drop that down and put
3:19a second second one on there so we just pull little stone out a second walk
3:26there
3:39box on the blocks square to make any final adjustments you need let's not try
3:47to move the back door locks in place until we plywood it right and we can
3:52move it around that way it will stay for the whole thing is going to shuffle
4:06faces flush with the floor
Foundation systems for building shedFoundation systems for building shed. Types of Foundations in Building Construction.
Militia were using a pretty basic foundation system all it is the cinder
0:05blocks on top of some crushed stone that goes into the dirt six to eight inches
0:09we just don't the topsoil down until we hit some gravel fill the holes up with
0:14crushed on and then put cinder blocks on top but for a lot of other cases you
0:19have to use a more substantial putting either by colder just by common sense if
0:23you live in a high wind area or seismic zone and you want this show to stay put
0:28you have to do something with a bit more substantial than just putting it on a
0:31bunch of cinderblocks ok over here we have some different alternatives to the
0:35foundation systems this one actually isn't that much more substantial is just
0:40a little bit easier it's a heavier foundation heavier block than what I
0:44have their you don't want to sit on top of the grass for the subsoil wanna put
0:48on something more substantial like we did like gravel or crushed don't want to
0:52set there's a hole formed into it can accept a four-by-four post pretty
0:57tightly and obviously this is a little bit easier to do as far as leveling
1:02because you don't have to set these at all the same level like we did with the
1:06cinderblock these can go a little bit different levels and then you can cut
1:09the four-by-four to the exact level so you should stays level and then you have
1:13some sort of connector to connect the post to the blog system another
1:19alternative is called the ready for doing in this is plastic and consists of
1:24base atop an in-between isn't just a simple schedule 44 inch pipe
1:31putting down as far as you want it so you want to go below the frost line and
1:35around here it's about 42 inches I would dig down 42 inches set the base down in
1:41the hole you cut the schedule 40 pipe place this on top
1:47take together you don't have to glue it and it's all set back Phillip make sure
1:51it stays plum and there's you're putting the floor frame fits right inside the
1:57land is here and then there are couple of bolts the Bolton secure the frame
2:01already putting the nice thing about the ready for doing is that you don't have
2:06to wait for the Semantic cure the minute you dig the hole dropped the footing in
2:10put the top on back till it you can build right on top of
2:13it right away there's no curing time no mixing time none of that so it's a good
2:17alternative to use for a solid footing when you don't want to wait for the
2:20concrete most people are familiar with the builders to basically their forum
2:28for concrete footings again just like the ready footing you can dig down as
2:33far as you want whether it's a thought or three or four feet to get below the
2:37frost able to have one drop this down inside make sure it's in the right
2:41position have a sticking up maybe two or three inches above the finished grade
2:45back fill it and then filled with concrete finish great came to hear we
2:51fill it with concrete right to the top before the concrete cures drop in anchor
2:55bolts or sticking up about an inter to once that secured we have a concrete
3:01foundation here with a bankable sticking up about an interest to now to fasten
3:05the floor system to the putting their lot of different types of systems to
3:10connect a floor system down to putting like this this is just one where it'll
3:15drop right onto the anchor bolt then you put a washer and nut down and take it
3:20nice and tight what's the fasteners placed on the anchor bolt and fastened
3:25and we can put a four-by-four post in their secure that builder floor frame on
3:30top of that and again there are all sorts of different fastening systems to
3:34attach post to be being to floor connections the whole idea is you want
3:39to have a system that connects your floor system to the post to post the
3:43footing again the concrete footings the most substantial fooling you can have
3:48your shed decker any structure so we've got the block on the right footing we
3:55got a more substantial large concrete footing that accepts a four-by-four post
3:59we have already footing and then we have the full concrete

Jack Of All Trades
LYRICS "Jack Of All Trades"
I'll mow your lawn
Clean the leaves out your drain
I'll mend your roof to keep out the rain
I'll take the work that God provides
I'm a Jack of all trades
Honey, we'll be alright
I'll hammer the nails
And I'll set the stone
I'll harvest your crops when they're ripe and grown
I'll pull that engine apart and patch her up
Until she's running right
I'm a Jack of all trades
We'll be alright
A hurricane blows
Brings a hard rain
When the blue sky breaks
Feels like the world's gonna change
We'll start caring for each other like Jesus said that we might
I'm a Jack of all trades
We'll be alright
The banker man grows fatter
The working man grows thin
It's all happened before and it'll happen again
It'll happen again
They'll bet your life
I'm a Jack of all trades
We'll be alright
Now sometimes tomorrow comes soaked in treasure and blood
Here we stood the drought
Now we'll stand the flood
There's a new world coming
I can see the light
I'm a Jack of all trades
We'll be alright
So you use what you've got
And you learn to make do
You take the old, you make it new
If I had me a gun
I'd find the bastards and shoot 'em on sight
I'm a Jack of all trades
We'll be alright
I'm a Jack of all trades
We'll be alright

Hand Dug Well Part 1This is the first chronicle of my attempt to hand did a small irrigation well on my place here in Montana. I am using a 6" auger post hole digger available at most hardware stores. The cost of having it dug is about $2100 so this is in part an attempt to save money and part because I love to see if I can do stuff like this on my own. I am not encouraging you to undertake such a project but if you are I hope my experiences might provide you some insight. The difficult conditions of my soil might not translate to yours. If your water is within 20 feet of the surface I see no reason this could not be accomplished as a project of your own. Know your own laws and limitations. Having looked at and experimented with a sand-point I think this is better. Larger casing means more water to draw from and so far I have been able to get through soil that would have crushed the sand-point anyway.
NOTE: In the end I used a sandpoint by driving it down my casing. Having pree dug the hole made that process much easier AND more importantly I have easy acess to the top of the well should I need to get back into it.

Overview of Manure Management Equipment for Small FarmsFor more: http://www.extension.org/67568 Increased local or regional food marketing opportunities have allowed commercial success in livestock and poultry operations with relatively small herds and flocks. The Census of Agriculture recently reports an increase in the number of small farms, as a proportion of all farms, across much of the U.S. Small animal feeding operations, less than 300 animal units, are a productive component of the animal ag sector. Finally, there continues to an interest in the development of hobby farm and equine related properties. All of these scenarios result in the necessity to manage manure resources, often on small acres, and often in close proximity to a neighbor. Knowledge about, access to, and acquisition of, appropriate manure handling equipment is a requirement to proper manure and nutrient management on all of these types of commercial or hobby farms and ranches.

Two Easy Ways To Value Landhttp://REtipster.com/valueofland
Finding the market value of vacant land can be an extremely challenging task. Let me take you through a couple of the steps I use to nail down a reasonably accurate and depending value for a parcel of land.
This approach is far from perfect (for obvious reasons), but it does inform you of what kind of competition you're dealing with (and what those sellers are expecting to get out of their property). In other words -- if you were to list your property for sale today, what other competitors would you have to stand out against?
Take a minute and do the math. Once you understand what price your property will have to be listed for in order to look like the best deal on the market, this will give you a better perspective for the property's potential value in contrast to the current market (because if you're offering the best deal, it will theoretically be the first one to sell).
You can also call 2 or 3 Local Real Estate Agents and Ask Their Opinion. This isn't a foolproof method, but it does help to "tell the story" of what your subject property may be likely to sell for. When I call local real estate agents, I've found it can be helpful to say something like this:
"Suppose I owned this property free and clear and I wanted to list it for sale with you today. What price would I have to list it for if we wanted this thing SOLD within the next 6 months?"
This kind of statement tells the agent a couple of things:
1. You're looking for a realistic idea of what it will take to sell this property quickly.
2. You're serious about getting this thing sold.
3. You want some honest answers.
4. If this agent helps you -- you may actually be willing to hire them for the job! This will encourage them to give your the time of day and offer up some legitimate answers.
As you're having these conversations, pay close attention to the prices they suggest. If they throw out some numbers that clearly aren't going to work for you, now is the time to figure that out (instead of after you've already bought the thing).
My primary warning would be this: Don't put too much faith in any ONE agent's opinion. There are a lot of clueless real estate agents out there (especially when it comes to vacant land), so if you're going to go through this exercise, make sure you're getting input from at least 2 or 3 people (the more the merrier).
How To Use Google Earth (Street View) to Research Properties RemotelyRead more about researching vacant land properties virtually at http://retipster.com/valueofland and http://retipster.com/truthaboutlandinvesting
If you're looking at buying vacant land, the properties next door can have some MAJOR implications for the value and "sale-ability" of your property (e.g. -- Would you prefer to live next to Glacier National Park or a Meth Lab?). Most people care a great deal about who their neighbors are, so get a good idea for what the surrounding properties look like, and what this will mean for the desirability of your property.
If the adjoining properties have any serious obvious issues that are beyond your control, you'll want to think carefully what this means for this property's value. For a quick tutorial on how to see what the adjoining properties look like next to the parcel you're researching, this video explains how I do it.
Reading a Parcel MapIn this video tutorial, we'll take an in-depth look at all things parcel maps and cover how to find a certain parcel, different types of parcel maps, various labels and notes, and basically how to figure these things out.
Breaking Down an APN
-First let's look at how to break down an APN or Assessor's Parcel Number. The most common APN format would be a number like 025-132-005. The book number is 025 and the page number in the book is 13. The block number follows the page number and in this example is 2. If there is only one block on the map, however, the number will be 0. Finally, the last number is the specific parcel number, which is 005.
Figuring Out APNs on a Parcel Map
-Now let's look at how to figure out a full APN by finding a single parcel on a map page. In this example, we will use the Butte County parcel map for book 1, page 1, and find the APN for parcel 17 in block 14.
-Since this is Butte County, the standard format is a three-digit book, two-digit page number followed by a block number, and a three-digit parcel number. So, the full APN is 001-014-017.
Different Types of Parcel Maps
-Next we have the different types of parcel maps you may come across. First there is the countywide index map, which shows where all of the map books are located for a particular county. Here is the index map for Butte County. Now let's go down a level and look at the index map for book 026.
-Here is a book index map, which shows where all of the map pages are located within a particular map book. Let's go down one more level and look at the parcel map for page 27.
-Finally we have a specific parcel map, which shows where all of the parcels are located within a particular map page.
Various Map Annotations
-Now let's move on to the various numbers, lines, notes and other items you may find on a parcel map. This time we'll check out a map in Tuolumne County.
-Numbers of Importance: The first numbers of importance are the book and page number, which are usually located in the upper-right corner of the map. The first number is the map book which is followed by the map page. Parcel numbers are located within their corresponding parcel boundaries and are usually circled. Block numbers are generally located in the center of a parcel group and are circled with an ellipse. Also within the parcel boundary is the lot number.
-Orientation & Scale: Maps are generally oriented to the north and you can tell this by looking at the arrow in the upper right corner of the map. This is also where you will usually find the scale, which gives you the ratio in inches to feet. The most common scale is 1" = 100' but you will see several other variations depending on the county and map book. Here are some examples.
-Measurements: Most counties will include the estimated total area in acres for each parcel on the map. Otherwise, the total area may not be displayed, it may only show for certain parcels or it may be listed as total square feet. You will also sometimes see the length of one or more parcel edges measured in feet.
-Lot Lines: Typically lot lines match up with the solid lines of existing parcel boundaries but if a lot line differs or there is more than one lot in a parcel, this will be shown as a dotted line.
-Adjacent Parcel Maps: If you would like to see which parcels are located on an adjacent parcel map, the page or book and page of the map will be noted at the edge of the current map.
-Section, Township & Range: If you are interested in knowing the particular section, township, and range where a parcel is located, this information is usually found at the top of the map. For this map in Tuolumne County, we are looking at a portion of the north half of Section 36, Township 2 North, and Range 14 East of the Mount Diablo Base & Meridian.
-Map Revisions: As parcel changes occur, these have to be updated on current parcel maps. When a county mapper makes a revision, a record of this revision will usually appear somewhere around the border of the map.
Single Sheet vs. Multi-sheet Map Pages
-The last item we will look at is single sheet vs. multi-sheet map pages.
-Most map pages consist of a single sheet but if you are unable to find a particular parcel on a map page, it may be that the page consists of multiple sheets. There should be a notation near the book and page number that tells you which sheet you are looking at and/or how many sheets there are total.
-To view the subsequent map sheets, click on the single arrow button pointing to the right in the map viewer toolbar.
So, I know that was a lot of information and your head may or may not be spinning but I hope this tutorial has helped broaden your understanding of the world of parcel maps. Thanks for watching!

How to find your Property Line using a CompassVisit http://jandjacres.net for this and other hobby farm activities.
See how we located a long section of our property line using nothing more than a paper map, protractor and compass. Learn how to do this yourself so you can outline your property, place fences or mark off any other landscaping you are trying to do.
To use this method you will need:
1) A map of the property you are surveying: For our example we used a photocopy of the survey that was conducted of our property before we purchased it. Whatever map you are using simply needs to have a compass bearing on it, such as the North arrow seen in the video.
2) A Protractor: For our example we printed a protractor from the Internet, but you may have one available or can purchase one anywhere office or school supplies are sold.
3) A Compass: No need to have an expensive compass. Just be sure that you can adjust the Bezel Ring (The outside ring around the compass spins). For our example we are using an inexpensive map compass purchased from a local department store.
Other items that may be useful, as seen in the video:
1) A way to mark the path you walk: In the video we use twine, but Survey Flagging Tape and many other materials will work.
2) A way to mark points that you locate: In the video we use a left-over piece of a metal pole to mark the point we found, but a piece of wood, Marking Flags and many other materials will work.
GPS Video 2 - RTKThis video should help you understand a bit about RTK, the connection methods, and NTRIP.
Boundary Surveyhttp://www.ludlowengineers.com

In the Vineyard - Organic Weed Controlhttp://www.bestrussianriverwineries.com - Organic farming techniques are being employed more and more in vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations.
In this video, Paul Sloan of Small Vines Wines and Viticulture explains the process of organic weed control in the vineyards and why it is beneficial for the resulting wines.
Sloan imported special Caval Tractors from France that would fit between the narrow rows which characterize the Small Vines approach to vineyard management, and for pinot noir and chardonnay vineyards in particular.
A system used extensively in the Bordeaux and Burgundy regions of France, Sloan and Small Vines utilizes the narrow spacing of vines (4' by 3') that he feels produces pinot noir and chardonnay grapes with excellent balance, acidity and character.

Terracing the slope, south of our gardens - Sepp Holzer Permaculture styleA little shout out to Paul Wheaton of www.Permies.com for all his hard work on the permaculture front. Check out some of our other videos, I think you'll like what we are up to! Inspired by Sepp Holzer in Austria and his way of gardening at high altitude, steep terrain and generally areas not thought of as agriculturally viable, we started terracing the south slope of our gardens. Its an area that we would like to plant with fruit trees, maybe some grapes, lavender and many small shrubs and bushes. We are working hard here everyday with the help of volunteers to make these dreams of self -sufficiency a reality. Considering that only one and half years ago we didn't have power or running water never mind gardens... we are pretty proud of what we have achieved. He then heads to the main grain store to test the harvested beans on the moisture meter to check they are dried to 14% so they can be sent to Egypt.
Tony discusses the main responsibilities of being a farm manager: growing produce, harvesting, monitoring moisture, monitoring grain temperature and being able to drive machinery. He enjoys working in the farming industry because he can go walking and see wildlife whilst achieving something every day.
In the afternoon he walks the fields in a W shape to check for slug damage to see if the field can be used in the near future. Tony talks about modern farming whereby these days there is modern machinery, GPS guidance and a record of everything. He states that as a manager he must be able to drill, spray, drive the combine harvester and be a spare man for any jobs that need doing.
At the end of the day tony goes back to the office to do some paperwork. He offers tips for people interested in getting the industry suggesting they complete a farming college course and get as much experience on a farm as possible.
If you want to get into the farming sector why not take up a course in mixed farming or complete an nvq in agriculture. East Durham College offer a wide range of courses; visit the site to find out more.

Avocado FarmingThis video is a product of the Biovision Farmer Communication Programme (FCP). The FCP uses different channels to promote organic - participatory video production is just one of the channels.
This video explains how one farmer is reaping the benefits of Avocado farming.
In 2007, Justus Kaniara Migwi planted 170 avocado trees on his farm in Muranga and three years later, he was harvesting his first fruits, albeit with a modest yield. However, by 2012 he was harvesting 25,000 avocados and last year it had increased to 60,000. Justus Kaniara Migwi told journalists how important it is to choose the right variety of avocado. Given his old age and being unable to do hard physical work, he planted the "haas" variety of avocado which is not as labour intensive. In addition, this variety has a multi-branch root system making it less susceptible to disease and in periods of drought, it is more resistant than others. The haas avocados have a mild taste and a longer shelf life.
If farmers are to choose what's right for them, they need access to relevant adequate information. They need to know how to handle the plants and avoid pests and disease. The Biovision "Farmer Communication Programme" provides this information direct to farmers. The TOF radio journalists, John Cheburet and Musdalafa visited Justus Kaniara Migwi on his farm in Muranga -- they regularly profile individual farmers on their weekly broadcasts on organic farming. By visiting farmers in their homes, the journalists learn much more about the personal experiences and problems affecting the farmers. The TOF journalists document information relating to new pests or diseases and on their return to Nairobi contact the scientists at icipe or other specialists and ask for advice. As soon as the problem is resolved, the solution is broadcast on the programme and so conveyed direct to affected farmers. This exchange of knowledge is very successful.
