And for many of the winners, who took a second to thank everyone from their teachers to their parents to… well, their makeup artists, tonight marked their very first Emmy win, so let’s get to recapping, shall we?
Tonight marked a major celebration for a few shows that swept up the comedy categories. Although the Modern Family winning streak has come to an end, MAJOR congrats are in order for the HBO political comedy Veep, which snagged the Emmy for best comedy series with actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus winning for Best Comedy Actress, along with a win for outstanding writing and supporting actor, Tony Hale.
Outstanding actor in a comedy series went to Jeffrey Tambor for his work in Transparent, where he took time to thank the entire transgender community, and the hit TV show also took home an Emmy for outstanding directing.
And this was a night of first for Game of Thrones (and by the way, IT’S ABOUT TIME!). The popular HBO show won for outstanding drama series, outstanding directing, writing AND Peter Dinklage as best support actor.
And continuing on the drama categories, Orange is the New Black star Uzo Adubo won for the second year in a row for her performance in the comedy-turned-drama series, this time for supporting actress and if you couldn’t tell how humbled she was to win, well her speech might explain better:
Tonight was also big for How to Get Away with Murder star Viola Davis’, who will forever go down in history as the first African American woman to win for best actress in a drama series. It was also a night of firsts for Mad Men star Jon Hamm, who took him his first Emmy after being nominated too many times for us to count in the past.
In the category for mini-series, it was a HUGE night for Olive Kitteridge scored Emmys for outstanding mini-series, best lead actor, which went to Richard Jenkins, outstanding writing and best lead actress, which went to Frances McDormand, who also wins for best and most straight-to-the-point acceptance speech:
And just to name a few more winners, Jon Stewart snagged an Emmy for outstanding variety talk series and of course we can’t forget about Amy Schumer, who took home the Emmy for her comedy sketch Inside Amy Schumer.
