Understanding Exports - Video TutorialThis video takes a practical approach as I go through the interface of Adobe Media Encoder, which both Premiere Pro and After Effects use, explaining what each of the sliders and checkboxes means and giving some guidelines about how and when to use them. You don't have to have seen my first tutorial first, but it will definitely help!
This tutorial follows on from my last tutorial, How Codecs Work. In that video, I explain the principles that codecs use to compress data efficiently - at least, I gave a good summary, since giving all the details would take weeks! They really are quite complex. http://vimeo.com/104554788

Should film music be original? That's a question that goes right back to the earliest of film sound. But with new technology came changes - and just maybe, the answer to why all Marvel films seem to have forgettable music.

Creating The IllusionFor the month of October RocketJump FRIGHT School releases spooky, horror-themed filmmaking tutorials! However, all the concepts and principles introduced in this video have been used in every style of filmmaking, from cinema's earliest days to the present.
"Movie Magic" is something you hear pretty often. Filmmaking itself is about creating an engaging illusion; bringing an audience into a story so deeply that they forget it isn't real. In this video essay, Joey discusses the unique and creative problem solving required of filmmakers to create and maintain that illusion. Ultimately, it comes down to teamwork: the seamless interlocking of every department and the layering of the different crafts, concepts, and techniques needed to make it work.
Man, 20 minutes is still not enough time to include everything we wanted. Did we miss any of your favorite movie magic tricks? Share them here in our forum!

The Science of Editing: Is Good Editing Just Instinct?Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino & George Lucas say the editor writes the last draft of the script. So why not bring in the editor sooner, while you are still writing the script?
"Editor's Thinking" is a cognitive skill set you can use to improve your screenplay before you start principal photography of your film.
Onscreen Drafting is the first chapter in our new series "The Science of Editing" by @ThisGuyEdits and Dr. Karen Pearlman, based on her book "Cutting Rhythms - Intuitive Film Editing": http://amzn.to/2cqkz5J
Karen holds a Doctorate of Creative Arts and is currently a lecturer in Screen Production at Macquarie University. She is a former President of the Australian Screen Editors Guild and a three-time nominee for Best Editing at the Australian Screen Editors Guild Annual Awards. Karen is also a full member of the Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image and the Film Critics Circle, Australia.
The onscreen draft is the process of test shooting your story and getting the editor involved early to make it work visually and emotionally, taking advantage of her sense of movement and flow.

Freddie's Keyboard Shortcuts [For Editing]Keyboard shortcuts (also called “hot keys”) assign the commands and tools of your editing program to specific keys on your keyboard, allowing you to access them instantly. Most editing programs already have default keyboard shortcuts programmed in, but allow you to customize them to your liking. Freddie has a unique keyboard layout that allows him to, as he calls it, "edit at the speed of thought."
(Please keep in mind, this video is about the customization of your keyboard. A pre-requisite tutorial on the different types of tools found within editing programs is in the works!)
In this video, Freddie shows you his personal keyboard layout and explains why he has certain tools placed on certain keys, and how this customized set up allows him to focus on story rather than the tech.
DOWNLOAD the in-depth PDF guide as well as Freddie's Adobe Premiere Keyboard Preferences here in the official forum post: http://bit.ly/FreddiesKeys (it's FREE!)
Please feel free to ask Freddie and RJFS your questions there, too!

Die Hard Editing Concepts**Turn on CC to see film credits**
One of the first run-ins Joey had with film editing was through a special feature on the Die Hard 5 Star Collection DVD. It was an interactive "Editing Workshop" which allowed you to choose different takes and angles from two scenes from the movie, and edit each scene together yourself. By comparing the difference options available to you against the final film, we get a unique look into the editors' decision-making process. Joey walks us through the workshop to demonstrate these "die-hard" concepts that are essential to film editing, as well as examples of how other films have used them to great effect.

How Does an Editor Think and Feel? For the past ten years, I’ve been editing professionally. Yet one question always stumps me: “How do you know when to cut?” And I can only answer that it’s very instinctual. On some level, I’m just thinking and feeling my way through the edit. So today, I’d like to describe that process: how does an editor think and feel?

Se7en's "Box Scene" - Art of the SceneWhat’s in the box? If those four words called to mind the 1995 serial killer thriller Se7en you know the answer… and a chill just shivered down your spine. Today, we're looking at the gory climax of David Fincher’s Se7en. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9AGRm
Se7en is a master class in setup and payoff and the final scene helped make a connect-the-dots police procedural an instant classic. It’s an ending that never would have happened if the studio had their way. Everything from the camera movements to the way Kevin Spacey highlights specific words bring out the artistry of the scene and evoke unease as we watch Detective Mills unravel.
So much of this movie came together due to a series of mistakes and rejections. First choice actors and directors weren’t interested, Fincher was accidentally sent an earlier draft of the script, the cinematographer had to leave before reshoots... all came together to create one of the most intense movies with one of the most unsettling endings of all time.
What did you think? Did you learn something new about the final scene of Se7en? What do you think is the most mind-blowing scene in movie history? What other scenes would you like us to explore in future episodes?

Editing 'Steve Jobs' - Variety ArtisansWhen editor Elliot Graham read the script for “Steve Jobs,” he felt it read like an action movie, with the fights all done with words. But bringing the energy of screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s verbal brawls to the screen isn’t always so easy. Graham joined Variety’s Tim Gray to reveal how he and director Danny Boyle kept Sorkin’s script sizzling.

It's collaborative. Respected and experienced filmmakers from a variety of industries—commercials, weddings, documentaries—share their secrets to what they do best. Then you join the conversation. Ask questions, share your experiences. Learn from one another.
It's educational and entertaining. Other platforms are boring and ineffective because of one major missing piece: Pre-production. Lessons at the Academy are the culmination of interviews, scripts, rehearsals. They're not too complex that you get lost and not too simple that you get bored. They're the very best ideas with the best presentation.
It's story-driven. No talking heads here. Lessons are dynamic—they show filmmakers in action, step-by-step screen flows, helpful graphics to break down bigger concepts, and B-roll to demonstrate techniques. It contains over 200 extra titles not featured in the book edited by Steven Jay Schneider, not because I think they're must sees, but because I felt they complimented the video better.<br />

The History of Cutting - The Birth of Cinema and Continuity EditingCinema began as a novelty - projecting dancing shadows on a screen of simple every day scenes. But through the contributions of talented artists, a new cinematic language of editing emerged. Trace the development of editing from The Lumiere Brothers through Georges Méliès, Edwin S. CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) lays down the ground rules for Fight Club. First and foremost, you don't talk about Fight Club.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this darkly comic drama, Edward Norton stars as a depressed young man (named in the credits only as "Narrator") who has become a small cog in the world of big business. He doesn't like his work and gets no sense of reward from it, attempting instead to drown his sorrows by putting together the "perfect" apartment. He can't sleep and feels alienated from the world at large; he's become so desperate to relate to others that he's taken to visiting support groups for patients with terminal diseases so that he'll have people to talk to. One day on a business flight, he discovers Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a charming iconoclast who sells soap. Tyler doesn't put much stock in the materialistic world, and he believes that one can learn a great deal through pain, misfortune, and chaos. Tyler cheerfully challenges his new friend to a fight. Our Narrator finds that bare-knuckle brawling makes him feel more alive than he has in years, and soon the two become friends and roommates, meeting informally to fight once a week. As more men join in, the "fight club" becomes an underground sensation, even though it's a closely guarded secret among the participants. (First rule: Don't talk about fight club. Second rule: Don't talk about fight club.) But as our Narrator and Tyler bond through violence, a strange situation becomes more complicated when Tyler becomes involved with Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), whom our Narrator became infatuated with when they were both crashing the support-group circuit. Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club was directed by David Fincher, who previously directed Pitt in the thriller Seven.

Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) face down a squad of Matrix-spawned soldiers with a combination of martial arts and fire power.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
What if virtual reality wasn't just for fun, but was being used to imprison you? That's the dilemma that faces mild-mannered computer jockey Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) in The Matrix. It's the year 1999, and Anderson (hacker alias: Neo) works in a cubicle, manning a computer and doing a little hacking on the side. It's through this latter activity that Thomas makes the acquaintance of Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who has some interesting news for Mr. Anderson -- none of what's going on around him is real. The year is actually closer to 2199, and it seems Thomas, like most people, is a victim of The Matrix, a massive artificial intelligence system that has tapped into people's minds and created the illusion of a real world, while using their brains and bodies for energy, tossing them away like spent batteries when they're through. Morpheus, however, is convinced Neo is "The One" who can crack open The Matrix and bring his people to both physical and psychological freedom. The Matrix is the second feature film from the sibling writer/director team of Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, who made an impressive debut with the stylish erotic crime thriller Bound.

Watchtower of TurkeyOver than 3500 km traveled in 20 days, capturing landscapes from the bluish tones of Pamukkale to the warm ones of Cappadocia, the all passing by a great variation of colors, lights and weathers through six other cities.
I've crossed Cappadocia, Pamukkale, Ephesus, Istanbul, Konya; and tasted baklava, kunefe, doner, the turkish tea; and got the chance to meet the soul of Turkey, its people.. and got their smiles and their hospitality.
This is Turkey lived by me from north to south, and I hope you enjoy it :)

This is My Town (The Quick and The Dead movie).wmvThe Quick and the Dead is a 1995 western film directed by Sam Raimi and starring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. The story focuses on "The Lady" (Stone), a gunfighter who rides into the 1878 Wild West town of Redemption, controlled by the ruthless John Herod (Hackman). The Lady joins a deadly dueling competition in an attempt to exact revenge for her father's death.
Writer Simon Moore's script for The Quick and the Dead was purchased by Sony Pictures Entertainment in May 1993, and actress Sharon Stone signed on as both star and co-producer. Development was fast tracked after director Sam Raimi's hiring, and principal photography began in Old Tucson Studios in Arizona on November 21, 1993. Distribution duties were covered by Sony-owned TriStar Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Quick and the Dead was released in the United States on February 10, 1995 to a dismal box office performance, and received mixed but generally favorable reviews from critics.
This was Woody Strode's final performance (the film is dedicated to him), as well as the last theatrical release of Roberts Blossom.

Blondie (Clint Eastwood) shoots Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef), knocking him into an open grave while Tuco (Eli Wallach) fumbles with his gun.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In the last and the best installment of his so-called "Dollars" trilogy of Sergio Leone-directed "spaghetti westerns," Clint Eastwood reprised the role of a taciturn, enigmatic loner. Here he searches for a cache of stolen gold against rivals the Bad (Lee Van Cleef), a ruthless bounty hunter, and the Ugly (Eli Wallach), a Mexican bandit. Though dubbed "the Good," Eastwood's character is not much better than his opponents -- he is just smarter and shoots faster. The film's title reveals its ironic attitude toward the canonized heroes of the classical western. "The real West was the world of violence, fear, and brutal instincts," claimed Leone. "In pursuit of profit there is no such thing as good and evil, generosity or deviousness; everything depends on chance, and not the best wins but the luckiest." Immensely entertaining and beautifully shot in Techniscope by Tonino Delli Colli, the movie is a virtually definitive "spaghetti western," rivaled only by Leone's own Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). The main musical theme by Ennio Morricone hit #1 on the British pop charts. Originally released in Italy at 177 minutes, the movie was later cut for its international release.

and a man's gotta learn to take it.
Try to believe though the going gets rough
that you gotta hang tough to make it.
History repeats itself,
try and you succeed.
Never doubt that youre the one
and you can have your dream!
You're the best, around
nothings gonna ever keep you down,

Fight till the end cause your life will depend
on the strength that you have inside you.
Oh, gotta be proud, standing out in the crowd
where the odds in the game defy you.
Try your best to win them all
and one day time will tell
when you're the one that's standing there
you've reached the final bell!
You're the best, around

I think the most profound scene in movie history. The bone, (weapon of pre-historic man) thrown skyward, gives way to a similar shaped 'nuclear weapons platform', (weapon of modern man) in Earth orbit. In a fraction of a second, the viewer has jumped millions of years in the evolution of mankind.

Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) tells Mr. Dryden (Claude Rains) that the expedition with the Bedouin tribe is going to be fun. After blowing out a match, Lawrence begins his journey in the desert.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This sweeping, highly literate historical epic covers the Allies' mideastern campaign during World War I as seen through the eyes of the enigmatic T. E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole, in the role that made him a star). After a prologue showing us Lawrence's ultimate fate, we flash back to Cairo in 1917. A bored general staffer, Lawrence talks his way into a transfer to Arabia. Once in the desert, he befriends Sherif Ali Ben El Kharish (Omar Sharif, making one of the most spectacular entrances in movie history) and draws up plans to aid the Arabs in their rebellion against the Turks. No one is ever able to discern Lawrence's motives in this matter: Prince Feisal (Alec Guinness) dismisses him as yet another "desert-loving Englishman," and his British superiors assume that he's either arrogant or mad. Using a combination of diplomacy and bribery, Lawrence unites the rival Arab factions of Feisal and Auda Abu Tayi (Anthony Quinn). After successfully completing his mission, Lawrence becomes an unwitting pawn of the Allies, as represented by Gen. Allenby (Jack Hawkins) and Dryden (Claude Rains), who decide to keep using Lawrence to secure Arab cooperation against the Imperial Powers. While on a spying mission to Deraa, Lawrence is captured and tortured by a sadistic Turkish Bey (Jose Ferrer). In the heat of the next battle, a wild-eyed Lawrence screams "No prisoners!" and fights more ruthlessly than ever. Screenwriters Robert Bolt and Michael Wilson used T. E. Lawrence's own self-published memoir The Seven Pillars of Wisdom as their principal source, although some of the characters are composites, and many of the "historical" incidents are of unconfirmed origin. Two years in the making (you can see O'Toole's weight fluctuate from scene to scene), the movie, lensed in Spain and Jordan, ended up costing a then-staggering $13 million and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The 1962 Royal Premiere in London was virtually the last time that David Lean's director's cut was seen: 20 minutes were edited from the film's general release, and 15 more from the 1971 reissue. This abbreviated version was all that was available for public exhibition until a massive 1989 restoration, at 216 minutes that returned several of Lean's favorite scenes while removing others with which he had never been satisfied.

Editing: Creating the "OH F**K" MomentIn this video, Director/Editor Joey Scoma walks us through a few classic scenes in cinema that demonstrate editing as an effective storytelling tool, and focuses in on a specific technique that he likes to call “The “Oh F**K” Moment.”
Editing is about controlling information – it determines how, when and why we see certain pieces of information or story. There are many different styles and techniques within the art of editing to accomplish this, but the main purpose of each of them is to further the story. In other words: “You need a reason to cut.”

Editing as Punctuation in FilmIn January 2014 Kathryn Schulz published an article in Vulture called "The Five Best Punctuation Marks in Literature."
Link: http://www.vulture.com/2014/01/best-punctuation-marks-literature-nabokov-eliot-dickens-levi.html
It got me thinking about what the five best "punctuation marks" in film might look like. I wanted to assemble a video essay with a rapidfire list of nominees of great moments of editing-as-punctuation in film. But as I started putting it together, the project grew into a twofold piece: an analysis of and response to Schulz's article as well as an attempt to spur new insights about editing by examining it through the metaphor of punctuation.
So, here it is: 20 minutes long, clips from 100 films (101 if you count that Woody Allen quotes Duck Soup in Hannah and her Sisters), and, I hope, an inspiration to anyone else who loves film on a formal level and believes, as Bazin did, that the language of cinema isn't done being invented yet.
Thanks to Kathryn Schulz for sending me down this wonderful rabbit hole of thought, and to the editors (in order of their cuts): Sally Menke, Buster Keaton, Abel Gance, Yelizaveta Svilova & Dziga Vertov, Michael Snow, Jonathan Amos & Paul Machliss, Harry Gerstad, William Reynolds & Peter Zinner, David E. Kuleshov said that film is born in the edit. And you gotta take him seriously, because he used the magic of editing to convince an audience that a blank-faced man was hungry/sad/lustful.
Later, montage showed audiences how to get in shape and learn to dance in under 2 minutes! (Of screen time). And that's the magic of film editing - understanding that comes from what isn't shown.
In less than 7 minutes (and plenty of cuts), we’ll show you just how important editing is to the creation of film: from the first stop trick to today.

Sheffield Doc/Fest 2013: Walter Murch: From The Godfather to The God ParticleJoin legendary film editor Walter Murch in this fascinating masterclass covering his body of work, including his new feature documentary Particle Fever, which is screening at this year's Doc/Fest. Universally acknowledged as a master of picture editing and sound design, Murch has worked with, among others, director Francis Ford Coppola on such cinematic milestones as The Conversation, The Godfather I, II and III, and Apocalypse Now. From the point of view of someone who started working in theatrical features when computers were completely absent, to now 45 years later when they are omnipresent, Murch will explore the constants that nonetheless remain after the "bones" of celluloid and sprockets have dissolved away, and examine the salient technical, artistic, and philosophical differences between the post-production of a theatrical scripted film and a feature-length documentary.

Griffith and the development of "continuity editing" in early film history, Soviet silent filmmakers would pioneer new innovative ideas about editing that moved film from an extension of theater into a mature and powerful artistic medium. <br />
