This Is the Only Shelter for Refugees in NYCEdafe Okporo is the director of the only shelter in New York City that provides housing for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants. He knows what it’s like to arrive in the U.S. with nowhere to go. Okporo left Nigeria seeking asylum after he was attacked by a mob because of his sexual orientation. With the hope of a better life, he came to the U.S., but soon realized he faced another battle. Refugees can undergo harsh treatment, having to navigate complex asylum law and face time in detention centers. Still, he persevered, and built a life for himself. Now, Okporo is helping others do the same.

Human Rights Activists Edafe Okporo | Author of #bed26Growing up in Nigeria, on media there was no face that represent LGBTQI people, no books about LGBTQI, nothing was discussed by family and friends that have to do with LGBTQI, so I published a memoir to document the lives of West African gay men, I created a youtube channel to tell the stories of West African gay men and this is not an act of bravery but it was fueled by my passion for equitable living, to see a world where the young me would not have to cross the border of another country seeking freedom.

Finding a safe place to call home is essential for new arrivals, and perhaps even more so for LGBTQ refugees who are fleeing their home countries because of violence and religious persecution, but also due to the fact that being LGBTQ is still a crime in many countries. Edafe Okporo, an activist, refugee, and director of a homeless shelter, is joined by others to talk about the challenges LGBTQ refugees face in finding a safe place to live, as well as a welcoming community, once they have arrived in New York City. Following the panel discussion, attendees are invited to view a NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt display and browse a specially curated selection of books and merchandise in honor of World Pride in our Museum Visitor Center and Shop. Members at the Contributor level and above are able to reserve seats.
