YIKES! Quilled by a Porcupine!Coyote Peterson is no stranger to pain but can anything really prepare him for being quilled by North America’s most notorious spike covered mammal? Well you’re about to find out! In this educational episode of Breaking Trail, Coyote will muster up the courage to show you exactly what to do if you or your pet ever get “spiked” by a porcupine; and it may surprise you to learn that there’s actually a very simple trick when removing the quills that can save you some serious agony.
If you thought we put you on the edge of your seat before, get ready for this encounter...it's nail, or should we say…“quill” biting!

Oleka: The Awareness of How Few Days Are MemorableAnother day, another week, another year. We've heard this song before. Our lives are built of the same few notes, repeated over and over. It’s not a grand symphony, full of surprises. It’s a song sung in canon, that simply carries on, until the tune gets stuck in your head. But then the verse changes over, and for the life of you, you can’t remember how it's supposed to go. TRANSCRIPT: "Your life is a highlight reel: a gradual search for a handful of memories. We like to think that every moment has potential, that there’s something transcendent hidden all around, that if you’d only stop to seize the day, you could hold onto it and carry it with you. But the truth is, most of life is forgotten instantly, almost as it’s happening. Chances are that even a day like today will slip through your fingers and dissolve into oblivion, washed clean by the tides.
Such is the rhythm of ordinary time: the featureless stretches between one memory and the next, the thousand acts of maintenance you do every day. You keep your body going, hauling it back and forth from one place to the next. You breathe in and out. Things fall apart, you clean up the mess. And it all washes away in the night, to be built up again in the morning. You throw the week against the wall to see what sticks, hoping you will remember something that happened today, anything.
Most of our lives are spent in the hinterlands, the empty stretches we fly over to get to the good parts. And you wonder how you could spend so much time just pushing back against the current, trying to keep your small boat afloat, watching for a glimmer on the horizon, waiting for those moments when you can finally say, eureka! “I’ve found it!”
But it’s all happening—it’s all real—whether you’ll remember it or not. So you might as well say ol?ka!—"I've lost it!"—as if to mark the passage of yet another opportunity, flushed down the hourglass. A final toast to the endless forgotten days, whose humble labor has given you everything you have, at least for the moment.
As the song says: long live the high tide and long live the low, but above all, long live the difference."

GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK!With jaws powerful enough to crush a bowling ball, The Grizzly Bear is definitely a force of nature that commands respect. Luckily human encounters with them in the wild are rare due to their remote wilderness habitat… However make no mistake, they do happen and being prepared on how to react can mean the difference between life and death.
In this episode of Breaking Trail, Coyote Peterson will show you first hand of what to do and NOT do in the event that you ever stumble upon one of these beautiful animals. He will do this using the aid of a 750lb male Grizzly Bear who is an ambassador for his species; helping people learn more about why these bears need to be respected and admired, not feared.
This is one episode that you have to see to believe – Coyote is going toe to claw with a Grizzly Bear!

How Scientists Can Slow Down TimeThe faster you are moving, the slower time moves! Trace is here to discuss time dilation, and how it’s so monumental that scientists were able to measure it in a lab!
Read More:
Time dilation measured at 40 percent of the speed of light - in a lab
http://arstechnica.com/science/2014/09/time-dilation-measured-at-40-percent-of-the-speed-of-lightin-the-lab/
“Einstein is most famous for general relativity, which is really a theory of gravity.”
Time Dilation
http://www.phy.olemiss.edu/HEP/QuarkNet/time.html
“It turns out that as an object moves with relativistic speeds a "strange" thing seems to happen to its time as observed by ‘us’ the stationary observer (observer in an inertial reference frame).”
Test of Time Dilation Using Stored Li+ Ions as Clocks at Relativistic Speed
http://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.113.120405
Synopsis: Relativity is Right on Time, Again
http://physics.aps.org/synopsis-for/10.1103/PhysRevLett.113.120405
“Special relativity predicts that a twin in a high-speed rocket, as viewed by his Earth-bound brother, will have a slower-ticking clock.”
Real-World Relativity: The GPS Navigation System
http://www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~pogge/Ast162/Unit5/gps.html
“People often ask me ‘What good is Relativity?’ It is a commonplace to think of Relativity as an abstract and highly arcane mathematical theory that has no consequences for everyday life. This is in fact far from the truth.”
How Special Relativity Works
http://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/everyday-myths/relativity10.htm
“In order to attempt to prove this theory of time dilation, two very accurate atomic clocks were synchronized and one was taken on a high-speed trip on an airplane.”
Hafele and Keating Experiment
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/relativ/airtim.html
“During October, 1971, four cesium atomic beam clocks were flown on regularly scheduled commercial jet flights around the world twice, once eastward and once westward, to test Einstein's theory of relativity with macroscopic clocks.”

In The Making takes you behind the scenes of spectacular projects, people, and ideas while they are being created. Doc North travels the world to give viewers an inspirational look into what it takes to make scientific breakthroughs, create companies, and invent the future. WARNING: These are things you COULD do at home, but that doesn't mean you SHOULD. Each demonstration was performed by an expert, with safety precautions in place. These projects and results are portrayals of our own personal experiences. Your results may vary depending on your location, experience, and modifications to project ideas. There are risks associated with some of these projects that require adult supervision, and some that require expert assistance. Use of this video content is at your own risk. Better yet, just watch the video again and enjoy the experience from the safety of your desk :)
Project inspiration: This was an original idea, and I'm not sure anything quite like this has been done on YouTube before? Maybe it has, maybe it hasn't .. but I thought it would be really cool to put out a video for 4th of July showcasing some insane tricks for summer parties. Then I imagined how awesome it would be if some of my favorite YouTubers got involved.
This was a challenging and exhilarating video to put together. It is the culmination of months of creative effort, and managing hundreds of little details to come together just in the nick of time. I'm really happy with how this turned out, and so excited at all my YouTube friends that accepted the challenge and came together to make this happen.
Each person involved made a separate video that they've posted on their channel. I've collected all of these videos into a playlist that you can see here: http://bit.ly/MegaCollabPlaylist
These are my favorite YouTubers. The ones I never miss seeing a video from, so if you like my videos, I'd like to recommend each of them for your consideration. :D
Sharing this video is the highest compliment. Thank you!

Conquering Our Fear Of DeathMan has "a mind that soars out to speculate about atoms and infinity, who can place himself imaginatively at a point in space and contemplate bemusedly his own planet. Gravitational Waves from the BIG BANG Discovered!Share on Facebook: http://on.fb.me/11mi7p6
BICEP2 has recently uncovered direct evidence for gravitational waves. What are gravitational waves and why is this exciting news? Does this really prove the Big Bang Theory? If confirmed, scientists will have the opportunity to learn more about how the universe works, how it began, how space-time and gravity interact and maybe even how to manipulate the very fabric of the universe in the future!
What's YOUR favorite scientific theory or discovery? Why? Let us know in the comments below!

[TRANSCRIPT]:
Finding waves and flexing biceps, it's not Muscle Beach...it's the Big Bang!
You've probably heard the exciting news that people at the Background Imaging for Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization 2, or BICEP2, have found evidence for gravitational waves. But you might be saying, why exactly is this exciting and what is a gravitational wave? Well, to answer those questions we need to go back about 13.8 billion years.
You see, we're talking about the time of the Big Bang. The theory that explains how the universe behaved when it first came into existence. We're talking a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a second when the universe expanded rapidly. And by rapidly I mean it violated the universal speed limit of the speed of light. It actually went much faster than that.
Scientists believe there should be evidence for this rapid inflation in the form of gravitational waves - something that Einstein hypothesized about in his theory of general relativity. But no one had observed any real evidence that they had actually existed. Until now.
If you were able to look at space time really closely, you would be able to see these little quantum fluctuations - ripples in space time. But they're so small we can't actually observe them. However, during cosmological inflation they got stretched really far and became gravitational waves.
No one had seen any evidence of these things until the folks over at BICEP2, who used a telescope to look at photons, little particles of light, in the cosmic microwave background, and they saw patterns that indicated the presence of gravitational waves. This is the last observable element of Einstein's theory of general relativity. Everything else had already been catalogued. So this is incredible news! Scientists suggest that we should wait for other people to either confirm or refute those findings, but they look pretty promising.
Einstein also said that the closer you get to the Big Bang, the more the laws of physics break down, and in fact time itself at some point ceases to exist. What happened before that? It's a meaningless question, because without time there's no "before."
And I saved the best for last. This really has me excited. You see, cosmological inflation models often include multiple universes as a possibility. The multiverse theory! In that, that inflation where the universe expands so fast it sets off other bubbles expanding with universes of their own inside them. Each universe having its own laws of physics. How awesome is that?
I'll admit there's very little practical application of this information in our day to day lives. But I maintain that it's this kind of knowledge that'll allow us to forge a path to the idealistic future. And just think. If we can learn more about how space time expanded faster than the speed of light, who knows, maybe in the future we'll be racking up some galactic speeding tickets of our own.

Floating on $20 Cardboard BoatsWATCH OUTTAKES HERE: http://testu.be/1dxciEe
It's battle of the boats as Tara and Anthony pair off with Patrick Norton and Michael Hand of DIY Tryin' to see if cardboard really can hold and float two people in water.
Watch to see how Patrick and Michael planned and built the boats here: http://revision3.com/diytryin/cardboard-boat-build-off
Join Anthony Carboni and Tara Long as they turn the world around them into a giant science experiment. New videos every Wednesday!
Materials Needed:
- Cardboard
- Gorilla or Duct Tape
- Box Cutter
- Liquid Nails or Wood Glue
Experiment Tips:
- Be sure to seal all exposed holes and cracks in your cardboard boat. The less ways for water to leak in, the better!
- We found the flat-bottom boat to have better, though the wedge-shape boat was faster. - Each boat lasted ~20 minutes of hard use in the water.
Buoyancy
http://www.brainpop.com/science/motionsforcesandtime/buoyancy/preview.weml
The buoyancy of any object in water depends on its volume (the amount of space it takes up) and density (how much mass it has per unit of volume) compared to the density of the water. Objects with large volumes and low densities tend to be quite buoyant.
Displacement
http://science.howstuffworks.com/buoyancy-info.htm
If a wooden board is placed in a bathtub full of water, some of the water will spill over the side. The amount of water pushed aside by the board is called the board's displacement. The board sinks only until it has displaced a volume of water whose weight equals the weight of the board.

4D Printing is the Future of DesignShare on Facebook: http://on.fb.me/1xxfZWj
That's right, it's one D better! Actually, 4D printing is about using a 3D printer to produce self-reconfiguring, programmable material that intelligently arranges itself into basically any object -- with no computers or electricity required! Skylar Tibbits, an MIT researcher, has already developed prototypes from his self-assembly lab. And this is just the beginning - from skyscrapers to space stations, the promises of 4D printing are amazing.
How would you use 4D Printing? Let us know in the comments below!

[TRANSCRIPT]:
Some assembly required may soon be replaced with "Just Add Water."
3D printers. I never get tired of thinking about all the possible applications, like building a brand new coffee table, or building a brand new 3D printer, or finally getting that Strickland action figure everyone's been asking for. But all of these great products have one thing in common - rigidity. That means they're going to keep that shape once I print them, unless I take a flamethrower to them, or maybe a hacksaw. But the advent of something called 4D printing could turn all of that on its head! That's right, it's one "D" better!
Actually, it's not just a catch phrase, 4D printing is really about using a 3D printer to print out self-reconfiguring, programmable material. Now imagine this. You have a non-living object that can change its shape and behavior over time. It's kind of like a robot, but there are no microprocessors, no circuit boards no motors - in fact to you it looks like a string of plastic. But you toss it into a kiddie pool, and upon contact with water you now have a secret message spelled out in plastic cursive!
Skylar Tibbits, the man who really came up with this idea of 4D printing, has gone even further. He's created programmable sheet material. It's a sheet of plastic that, when submerged in water, can clench up into the shape of a cube. And a cube is just the beginning! More complex designs will mean millions of more shapes - like self-folding origami!
In the near future, imagine a smart grid of plumbing, with pipes that can actually expand and contract in response to water demand. Or maybe even heal if there is a frozen segment that breaks open. Or imagine self assembling furniture. Print out a flat board and just add water, next thing you know it curls up into a rocking chair. Now, wrap your mind around how useful this would be in a really hostile environment, like low Earth orbit, where building stuff comes at a high cost and a high risk.
Now the prototypes we have seen so far have been pretty simple, but the promises are amazing! Think about it on the really big scale. What about skyscrapers and bridges. If we could make them out of smart materials like smart beams and smart bricks, they could heal themselves after weather damage or prepare for something massive like an earthquake.
Or we flip it. We go on to the very small scale and now we have micro particles moving around in our bodies, maintaining our health. You might be wondering, how much complexity can build up our of stuff that changes its shape without computers or electromechanical motors. Lets think about proteins for a second. Proteins are pretty much what make any basic animal function possible on a cellular level. And a protein is really self-reconfiguring material. It's a polypeptide. It's a long chain of amino acids. So once again we're playing Copy Cat to mother nature.
Now lets not get ahead of ourselves, I'm not actually suggesting that we're going to be printing out some sort of plastic replicant that can gain self-awareness and yearn for more life But maybe we will. In fact, it's hard for us to predict right now. We're just seeing the very beginning of this technology, and the complexity could become truly amazing.
So, how would you use 4D printing? Let us know! Leave a comment below, we promise we're going to read every single one of them and while your there why don't you "like" the vide if you enjoyed it, and subscribe, we got some great stuff coming up soon!
Legendary Brewer Honored w/ SF Beer Week Special ReleaseIn preparation for SF Beer Week 2014, all of the best microbrewers in San Francisco gathered to make a special beer for homebrewer extraordinaire, Griz of SF Brewcraft. Griz was a mentor and a tough-love fellow that directed many of the Bay Area's top microbrewers to success. If you want to learn more about the ale that was made in his honor, please read the note below from Social Kitchen and Brewery's, Kim Sturdavant:
For me, thinking of the recipe as a full size batch was in my comfort zone,
so it was actually more of a challenge to scale it down for the test
batch. I started with a list of ingredients used in the Lawnmower ale
recipe the folks at Brewcraft give out, and then modified percentages to my
own liking; keeping in mind the original intended balance of the beer. It
was really fun to brew the test batch with no control over things like
fermentation temperature, and have the beer turn out great none-the less.
Sort of took me back several years to the moment I attended a free Monday
night class taught by Griz who emphasized not sweating the details and
assuring us our beer would turn out great. It did back then, and it did
this time, too!
The final recipe uses the exact same ingredients as the original Lawnmower
Ale, but with more emphasis on the hops. We want to give people something
they can really get their nose into, but keep it a classic easy drinking
"lawnmower" type of beer; not that many of us in SF have lawns to mow. The
hops we used were also sourced from a small broker out of Oregon called
Indie Hops, who in my opinion reign supreme over varieties like the Liberty
and Mt. Hood that are used in this recipe. It should also be noted that I
grew up in Oregon and these hops smell like a hike through the hills
outside my hometown of Eugene. What we've ended up with is a Hoppy
American Blonde with distinct spicy, grassy, and floral hop profile. It's
steering away from the modern hop trends of dank, resinous, tropical fruit
bombs and I like it for that reason, as I'm sure Griz would, too. It's got
classic flavors with a modern hop forward balance.
Cheers,
Kim

When Do Childhood Memories Fade? How much do you remember about being a child? Probably not too much. Childhood memories can be a bit spotty. But at what age is your brain able to maintain memories so that you can recollect them later in life? Anthony tackles this question as he takes a look at some recent research on a phenomena known as childhood amnesia.

Can Animals Predict an Earthquake? It isn't terribly uncommon for some animals to predict storms, but is it possible for them to predict, let's say, an earthquake? Japanese Oarfish are rarely seen, but when they are, it's when they wash up on shore just days before an earthquake, making researchers question if there's a connection. From barking at the sky to abstaining from sex, Anthony explains what certain animals do when they're 'predicting' a major storm or event, and why they do it.

Laughing Gas Infused CocktailsWATCH EXTRAS HERE: http://testu.be/1aoJnUQ
Join us LIVE Monday, January 27th! RSPV here: http://testu.be/1cgjPWl
Who wants to wait weeks for an infused cocktail when you can make your own in two minutes? Join Anthony and Tara as they booze it up with nitrous oxide, AKA laughing gas.
Experiment Tips:
- Cold ingredients will result in a weaker infusion. Use warm or room temperature foods and liquids for the most flavorful results.
- Use two nitrous oxide canisters to fully infuse the liquid with the food items.
- If liquor isn't an option, infusions can also be done with oils and/or milk.
- Overall cost: ~$25 for whip cream dispenser, ~$10 for ten N2O chargers.
Fast vs. Slow Infusion
http://www.notmartha.org/archives/2012/09/27/diy-infused-spirits-fast-vs-slow/
How It Works
http://creamright.hubpages.com/hub/Infusing-Liquor-with-a-Whipped-Cream-Dispenser
When you charge your whipper with nitrous oxide, high pressure forces liquid and nitrous oxide into the pores of your flavorful food. When you release the pressure inside the whipper, the nitrous forms bubbles and escapes from the food quickly, bringing flavor and liquid out with it.
