Widely regarded to be one of the best BJJ instructors on the planet, Henry Akins is the sole Rickson Gracie black belt that Rickson himself chose to run his Jiu Jitsu program at the Rickson Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy for 10 years.
Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the acadamy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. In 1997 the school moved to the Pacific Palisades where Henry trained and assisted main Instructor Luis Heredia and also participated and trained in all of the classes taught by Rickson. During these years Henry had the opportunity to train with Rickson and help him prepare for his fights in Japan. In 2000 the acadamy moved again to Wilshire blvd in West LA. By this time Henry had begun teaching many of the classes at the school. In Feb of 2004, because of his persistence and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie presented Henry with a blackbelt, being only the third American...

In 1995 Henry Akins started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the Rickson Gracie Academy. He received his black belt from Rickson in 2004. He now has his own school called Dynamix MMA located in west LA.
Some of the Highlights:
“Making sure that the Jiu-Jitsu you learn is effective whether you have a gi on or not, and if you need to use it on the streets to protect yourself or someone that you care about.”
“My focus has always been how to use Jiu-Jitsu as a martial art, as a way to instill confidence in a person… and if there is ever a confrontation they feel prepared to deal with it.”
“It’s not about speed, a lot of people think you need to be fast…. it is about timing”
“The focus for a competitor is the complete opposite from the focus of a teacher. If you are competing the focus is on yourself…. as a teacher your focus is on others.”
We also talk about:
Training with Rickson Gracie
Having a style that doesn’t rely on grips
BJJ and confidence
The main reasons why students join Dynamix MMA
The importance of getting good at the basics
How BJJ has changed and remained the same since he started
Teaching versus competing
What he does to help his teachers learn how to teach
How BJJ can affect the larger community
Training BJJ specifically for self defense
What happens to students that use strength or speed over technique
Different types of pressure you can put on your opponent
How the BJJ community is one big group regardless of affiliation

Henry Akins, "Invisible Jiu-Jitsu" Connection: Jiu-Jitsu Magazine, Issue #28.His nickname is “The Jiu-Jitsu Super Computer” because his high level of understanding and attention to detail about the gentle art. These great qualities along with his conceptual approach and philosophical ideals truly and sincerely make him much more than that. In issue #19 he blew our minds by entertaining our brain matter with what would make anyone question everything they know, or at least what you thought you knew about jiu-jitsu. It was almost as if being asked whether you wanted to take the red or blue pill. Keep going about your existence or discover the truth? The red pill was chosen, there was no smoke or mirrors and though we couldn’t see it our Lead Editor/Publisher, surely felt the power of “Invisible Jiu-Jitsu” that day courtesy of one of Rickson Gracie’s most prestigious students and the third American to ever be awarded a black belt. So when the opportunity to meet with Henry Akins of Dynamix MMA (https://www.http://dynamixmartialarts.com) was available we were there!
In this video and it’s partner (http://youtu.be/hhsdKOXE8rM) Henry explained and provided an amazing presentation on knowing when to connect, as well as disconnect from your opponent and why it is so important. To the untrained eye it’s impossible to see, but once broken down and then shown the thought of , “For my ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. It's energy surrounds us and binds us.”, came to mind. More than “The Jiu-Jitsu Super Computer”, Henry may be jiu-jitsu’s version of Yoda. If you are ever in the Los Angeles area and ever have the chance to train with Henry we highly recommend it!

Henry Akins - Hidden JiuJitsu (Part Two)Check out the following link - http://bit.ly/Henry-Akins to discover more of Henry Akins "Hidden Jiujitsu" techniques. You can see an example of Henry's techniques fro a seminar i filmed on my youtube channel. Today Henry is the closest thing to Rickson Gracie who he achieved his Black Belt from and was also his top student.
He still carries the knowledge that Rickson Taught him. This was the best seminar i went to as Henry really goes deeper into the more subtle details of the basic positions that most of us know, but he really gives you a deep understanding of those basics and how to make yourself feel 400LB when your in mount or side control for example. You won't find details and knowledge like this anywhere else!
Since being at Henry's seminar it really improved my weight distribution and pressure and i can really feel the difference in my game! It also makes me more efficient and use less strength when i'm in these basic positions because i know where to place by body. Learn from the best Professor i have come across by following this link http://bit.ly/Henry-Akins.
Check out part one of Henry's story on how he discovered The Art Of Jiujitsu and how it became his purpose in life. There is also more videos on my YouTube channel of Henry teaching some basic positions.
