The system by which people in Britain receive state support is undergoing radical reform. The current complex raft of benefits, which include housing, unemployment and family support are being capped and streamlined.
The government - led by a coalition of Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties -- says that the current system is unaffordable and that the changes are designed to encourage people back to work. But critics of the new system argue that it fails to tackle underlying issues such as the difficulty of finding work and cost of living differences across the country.
One of the most controversial reforms is the reduction in housing support for those living in accommodation with spare rooms - the so-called bedroom tax. Since April, when the reforms began to take effect, Nina Robinson has been spending time with London families affected by the changes. She meets Emmanuel and Tya who have been living with their children in overcrowded conditions. They think it is fair that people who have spare bedrooms should be made to downsize to smaller homes, so that families like theirs can benefit. But she also meets 60 year old Fred, who says his back problems prevent him from working and that he is being forced out of his home.
BBC Four - The Curse of Oil - 1 Rich and PoorThree-part series that goes on a revealing journey through the world's oil-producing regions, beyond the familiar territory of the Middle East.
Nick Fraser
Storyville Series Editor
Now that the oil price appears to be rising inexorably at the pumps, newspapers are full of gloomy predictions related to our increasing addiction to perishable reserves of oil. Bill Cran's series takes a somewhat different approach.
We are in fact still amply supplied with oil on planet earth. The problem is that most of it lies in what we cosseted addicts regard as the wrong places. Getting enough oil to fill George Bush's SUV requires dealing with nasty governments or destroying the wilderness. But the relationship between oil companies, consumers and those who live where the oil is extracted is changing very rapidly. It is becoming possible for native populations to obstruct oil companies.
Cran's series leaves one with the feeling that there are no easy answers - but that, given the hysteria surrounding the subject, is no bad thing. It's also ravishingly shot.

The Shame of BBC TV LicensingMake no mistake -- the BBC will NOT like this video. It is high time that the BBC stood on it's own feet instead of extorting £150 annually from every household in the UK. In this video we discuss some of the reasons why the BBC's TV Licensing must be abolished.
The BBC would have you believe that TV Licence "evasion" is extremely low, and that 97% of us watch TV as it is being broadcast over the airwaves. Of course, this is typical BBC propaganda. The reality is that an unprecedented number of people are refusing to buy a TV Licence - simply because they don't need one. We are moving into an age where people no longer feel the need to watch TV as it is being broadcast. The days when families would all gather around the TV every night are long gone Catch-up TV is fast becoming the norm and the BBC clearly don't like it because a TV License is not required for watching catch-up TV on the internet. The consequence for the BBC is that their TV Licensing business model -- IE: extorting money from UK households -- is unsustainable in the 21st century. The whole thing has already become untenable and it is only a matter of time before the BBC comes crashing down due to the sheer number of people who no longer need a TV Licence.
The BBC is a profit-making corporation masquerading as an essential public service in order to obtain funds from the public purse. Long gone are the days when the BBC was a necessity for providing information, education and entertainment. The BBC seems to think it is still 1954. However the BBC is not as important today as it likes to think it is. There are now a multitude of ways to get information, education and entertainment in the home -- including YouTube, Netflix, games consoles, and more TV and radio channels than you can shake a stick at. The BBC has become irrelevant and unnecessary in this day and age. The only way it can possibly continue in the 21st century is to abolish the TV Licence and fund itself through subscription, sales and advertising revenue. The BBC already makes around £2 billion a year from selling content worldwide so they're well used to operating in the commercial arena. Until the BBC finally grows up, it will continue to operate as an extortion racket whilst wasting our money on lavish lifestyles, paedophile entertainers, executive pay-offs, and gagging orders for ex-employees. I am not a fan of any mainstream media, but at least other media companies, like Sky and ITV, have to survive in the real world - they have to raise their own funds in the marketplace, they are accountable when they get things wrong, and in times of recession they have to make cut-backs and downsize. Whereas the BBC survives on money extorted from the public, so it has no accountability whatsoever, plus their corporation is recession-proof because they continue to get the same amount of money regardless of the state of the economy.
In short, the BBC, in its current form, has had its day. The only way they can salvage any public trust or respectability is to grow up and stand on its own feet for once in its life. Maybe then we'll see an end to their arrogance, snobbery and blatant disregard for public opinion. Or maybe not, but at least we won't have to pay for it!
A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this video. :)

BBC Empire - Episode 4 Making a Fortune Jeremy PaxmanJeremy Paxman continues his personal account of Britain's empire, looking at how the empire began as a pirates' treasure hunt, grew into an informal empire based on trade and developed into a global financial network. He travels from Jamaica, where sugar made plantation owners rich on the backs of African slaves, to Calcutta, where British traders became the new princes of India.
Jeremy then heads to Hong Kong, where British-supplied opium threatened to turn the Chinese into a nation of drug addicts - leading to the brutal opium wars, in which Britain triumphed and took the island of Hong Kong as booty.
Unfair trading helped spark the independence movement in India, led by Mahatma Gandhi; in a former cotton spinning town in Lancashire, Jeremy meets two women who remember Gandhi's extraordinary visit in 1931.

BBC Empire - Episode 5 - Final Episode - Doing Good - Jeremy Paxmann the final part of his personal account of Britain's empire, Jeremy Paxman tells the extraordinary story of how a desire for conquest became a mission to improve the rest of mankind, especially in Africa, and how that mission shaded into an unquestioning belief that Britain could - and should - rule the world.
In Central Africa, he travels in the footsteps of David Livingstone who, though a failure as a missionary, became a legendary figure - the patron saint of empire who started a flood of missionaries to the so-called 'Dark Continent'.
In South Africa, Paxman tells the story of Cecil Rhodes, a man with a different sort of mission, who believed in the white man's right to rule the world, laying down the foundations for apartheid.
The journey ends in Kenya, where conflict between white settlers and the African population brought bloodshed, torture and eventual withdrawal.

Dewani Uncle Criticises BBC Over DocumentaryA programme casting doubt on the case against a man accused of murdering his wife has angered the family of his alleged victim.
The uncle of murdered honeymooner Anni Dewani has accused documentary makers of interfering in the justice system ahead of a programme raising questions about the case against her alleged killer.
Ashok Hindocha, the uncle of Anni Dewani who was killed in South Africa in November 2010, said it is up for a court to look at allegations against her former husband Shrien.
He is accused of ordering the murder of his new bride, who was shot in the neck as the couple travelled in a taxi in the outskirts of Cape Town.
A team from BBC series Panorama has obtained police files concerning the prosecution case against Shrien Dewani and has asked forensic experts to examine them.
A BBC spokesman said the experts' findings have exposed "fundamental failings" in the police investigation, and it is in the public interest for them to be aired.
The programme is due to be broadcast next Thursday.
But Mr Hindocha told Sky News that the BBC should pull the programme, and instead hand over the documents to Dewani's defence.
"What the BBC is doing is not correct. This programme should not be run before the trial.
"Justice should be served in a court of law. Let's cross-examine, put the evidence on the table, let everyone see.
"Has all the evidence been presented to the BBC? I don't know.
"The case should be done in a court of law, not in a studio somewhere with public funding. No, that is very wrong."
In July District Judge Howard Riddle ruled that Dewani should be extradited to face trial in South Africa, now that the 33-year-old has recovered sufficiently from mental health problems.
But lawyers acting for Dewani immediately announced their intention to appeal, and are expected to continue with their legal fight next month.
A BBC spokesman said: "BBC Panorama has obtained the secret police files which make up the prosecution case against Shrien Dewani and has commissioned leading forensic experts to review all the evidence.
"Their findings expose fundamental failings in the police investigation.
"Panorama strongly believes it is in the public interest for these matters to be aired.
"We understand that the programme may be difficult viewing for Anni's family and have approached it sensitively, including contacting her uncle, as the representative of the family, in advance, to let him know that it would air on September 19.
"We received replies from Mr Hindocha which did not raise these objections.
"The police evidence we have obtained is neither manufactured nor stolen, nor did we pay for it."
Dewani has undergone treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and depression at psychiatric hospitals near Bristol since his wife's death.
It emerged that he has been allowed to position a camper van in the grounds of Fromeside hospital, where he spends hours at a time, and is also allowed unregulated access to a laptop and visits to his nearby home every day.
A spokesman for Dewani family told Sky News: "Shrien was committed to clearing his name in a court of law when he was fit and well enough to travel."
So far three men have been convicted over Mrs Dewani's death.
Last year South African Xolile Mngeni was convicted of premeditated murder for shooting her.
Prosecutors claimed that he was a hitman hired by Dewani to kill his wife, something that Dewani has consistently denied.
Taxi driver Zola Tongo was jailed for 18 years after he admitted his part in the killing, and another accomplice, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, also pleaded guilty to murder and was handed a 25-year prison sentence.
The programme calls into question their testimony.
