7 Photography Tips from a 3 year oldYou may think that 3 year old Mac is learning to use a camera, but actually he’s teaching us adults some mighty powerful photography tips:
1. Don’t get hung up on your equipment, learn to take off the cap, turn it on, press the shutter and get going!
2. Take pictures of what you love! He went right after his backpack, zebra and dolphin.
3. Visualize your shot: With his dolphin he knew before he pressed the shutter “I want his eye”
4. When in doubt go out! After shooting inside he got right up and went outside! Don’t sit on your butt waiting for shots, go out and find them!
5. Connect with your subject, whether people or not “I want to say cheese on the trees!”
6. Show the photos you’re proud of to others, even if you have to be insistent! “Hey look at!”
7. Have that child-like sense of newness and discovery that keeps photography (and life) always fresh and interesting!
Watch the video and practice these 7 points and show us your results on our Photo Critique page. http://www.silberstudios.tv/photo-critique-3/

Here's what Robert said said: This is a different kind of photowalking than we usually do. First, no Thomas Hawk. Second, we have a real, professional photographer (he even has the license plates to prove it). Third, we go for a nature walk up in the Long Ridge Open Space Preserve above Silicon Valley. The photographer is Marc Silber, who also teaches photography and has an eBook on how to make better photographs. He gives us tons of tips in this one-hour walk.

Photography in the Art of Life: Photography Tutorial Ep.1:Marc Silber talks about how to become a GREAT photographer, moving through the 4 stages of photography, getting better and better as you go. He gives you some simple steps you can follow right now to advance your photography.
DIY DSLR Steadicam "Silver Flyer" StabilizerA step by step tutorial on building your own steadicam for a fraction of the price of a professional steadicam.
Parts List:
(2) 3/4" 90 degree elbow metal tubing
(3) 3/4" metal tubing couplers
(1) 1/4" Hex screw
(1) 1/4" Nut
(1) 5/16" x 1" Fully threaded hex screw
(1) 5/16” Nut
(2) 1/4” x 3” Hex screw
(2) 1/4” Nut
(~50) 1/4” center x 1 1/4” diameter fender washer
(2) 1/4” Butterfly nuts
(1-3) Standard bearings (for how much it turns)
(1) 1/2” PVC pipe 5-8 inches long
(1) 1/2” PVC pipe male and female adapter (2 parts)
(1) Traxxas 1651 set (3 pieces per set): http://amzn.to/1ekxS60
(1) Macro Slider : http://amzn.to/1T7W8HJ
(1) Quick release plate: http://amzn.to/1Hyiro5
-Drilling (in order)
Initial holes are drilled through the front and back of the pipe (must be centered). The hole closest to the pipe ending will be widened to 1/4" through both sides. The farthest hole will be widened to 1/2" on the bottom, and 3/8" on the top.
The couplers will have a hole drilled through the back after the initial hole it came with has been widened with a 1/4" bit. Do this for both the top and bottom couplers.
NOTE: Do not drill until you are certain you are using the correct sized bit in the correct location. Use the video as a reference.
-Balancing
After your steadicam has been created, balancing it will be the toughest part. the bigger the camera, the more weight you will need on the bottom. Once you have it mostly balanced except for small tilts and leans, you're ready for final tweaks. You can tweak which way your steadicam tilts by rotating the bottom coupler to counteract the weight of the camera. Magnets are an optional weight that are extremely useful as they can be placed anywhere. If you find your steadicam wont balance no matter what, add more weights.
The amount of bearings is based purely off of preference. After the initial bearing, add one or more above that one to reduce the turning sensitivity.

Documentary Photography: Teru Kuwayama's Iraq & Afghanistan PhotosWe're near Stanford University with our guest, Teru Kuwayama, a veteran documentary photographer who frequently finds himself in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan. His photography has been featured in a stream of publications including Outside, Newsweek, Fortune and The National Geographic. Marc's Photography Tips: Choosing Black and White Versus Colorhttp://www.silberstudios.tv Digital photography is an amazing medium in which photographers can shoot their pictures and then determine if the picture will be shown in color or black and white.
Andy Katz, a forty year photography veteran, shares his experience and provides tips for shooting in both black and white as well as color, on the Marc Silber Show.
For professional photographers, the question boils down to "is the color helping or hindering the photograph?" If the color is hindering the beauty or quality of the photo, then use the Silver Efex Pro software to convert the photograph to black and white this works extremely well because you can't tell the original photo was shot in color.

Photography Tips From Fine Art Photographer Huntington Witherillhttp://www.silberstudios.tv Fine art photographer Huntington Witherill joins us today on the Marc Silber show to share tips about photography and his views on the process as a whole. He reminds us that it is important to focus on the process of being the photographer rather than constantly looking to get the next photograph or image.
A passion for the medium is one of the most important components—being engaged and passionate about anything takes a lot of patience, persistence and hard work. Huntington also advises people to get rid of preconceptions when going out to a location to shoot photos. It's easy to carry a preconceived idea when you're going to a specific place, but you might happen upon something completely different that creates an amazing photo. As for practical tips, he believes that 2D design classes are helpful for visualizing composition for photographs. Learning how to arrange forms and lines is useful for creating balance and a sense of purpose in a photograph.
Photography Tips from Commercial Photographer Vincent Laforethttp://www.silberstudios.tv Commercial photographer Vincent Laforet joins us today on the Marc Silber show to talk about his approach to photography. He provides us with photography techniques and tips for both amateurs and professionals alike. For six years, Vince was a photojournalist for the New York Times, where he worked on a team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its 9/11 coverage. As a photojournalist, Vince often had to choose a single image that most accurately captured the essence of an event.
He advises people to put the camera down, walk around, and ask themselves a series of questions, such as "What really is special about this place?" Learning about the history of a photo shoot location or finding the best time of day for shadows and lighting is just as important for creating a great photo composition. When looking through the lens, a photographer needs to make sure that a photo will elicit emotions and thoughts.
Vince points out that many people romanticize the life of a photographer - they forget about the preparation and packing of equipment that accompanies every photo shoot. Carrying too much equipment slows down the photographer and may result in missed images and opportunities, not enough and you can also miss shots, so do your research and be prepared including your memory cards.

Photographer Jack Hutch - Photography Tips and Techniqueshttp://www.silberstudios.tv Based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, commercial photographer Jack Hutcheson has taken numerous photographs of landscapes, architecture, and people, including a number of campaigns for famous clients like Apple, Time Magazine and Adobe. Today, he joins us in this video with Mar Silber to talk about shooting and lighting tips for aspiring photographers.
Jack strongly advises people to loosen up when they're shooting photographs--experimenting with techniques and keeping an open mind will allow them to shoot better photos. The same method can be applied to lighting--intesad of worrying about the exact technical aspects, experiment with different light sources to find one that fits the scene. For example, Jack once used the headlights of his car as a light source, which was perfect for his photo shoot. He also touches upon the specifics of f-stop speeds and aperture sizes that are a good starting point for sharp images.
Portrait Photography Tips - Patrick Roddie's Burning Man Photoshttp://www.silberstudios.tv Today we're talking with well-known Burning Man photographer Patrick Roddie on Advancing Your Photography. Roddie is a self-taught photographer and he shares some tips for portrait photography that he's learned while shooting his Burning Man photos for the past 13 years.
Patrick doesn't follow a strict checklist of techniques when it comes to photographing people. Instead, he focuses on connecting with people and capturing the moment. He learned photography by taking pictures of "stuff", and wasn't sure how to approach and take pictures of people. But if you are comfortable with and trust yourself, portraits are much easier than you think!
Roddie approaches every portrait by maintaining eye contact with his subject as he frames the photo in his mind and raises his camera to quickly take the shot. If you worry too much about lenses or F-Stops, etc, you might miss the decisive moment!

John Todd's Sports Photography Tips & Techniques - Soccer Photoshttp://www.silberstudios.tv/ "Welcome to a new episode of the Marc Silber Show - Advancing Your Photography! We're in San Francisco with our guest John Freeman Todd, a professional sports photographer for over 21 years. He shares a few sports photography tips that can help amateurs start taking better photos. John specializes in soccer photography, and as the team photographer for Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes and the U.S. Men and Women's soccer teams, he has taken a number of stunning pictures over his career.
John's style is to take bold, beautiful images. He keeps the background clean so the actions and emotions of his subject are the clear focus of the photo. He follows one of Ansel Adams' best photography tips: think about the end result before you take the picture, and use your mind as a tool to achieve that goal. His advice for amateurs is to move beyond your camera's full auto settings and learn how to use manual settings for focus, lighting, and exposure.

While Joey's commercial work consists of advertisements and work for movies, television, and musicians, his personal work focuses on fine art portraiture around the world. Today, he talks with Marc Silber about techniques for both beginning and established photographers alike
One distinct quality in Joey's photos is the clear emotional connection between subject and photographer. Joey concentrates on interacting with the subjects beforehand to make them more comfortable. Often, they are not accustomed to working with cameras, so Joey will spend a day just getting to know them and their culture. He describes these images as collaborations with the subjects, which result in much more powerful photos.

Photojournalism and Photography Techniques: Tips From Ed KashiAward-winning photojournalist Ed Kashi joins us today on the Marc Silber Show to share tips on advancing your photography. His photojournalism work has covered a wide range of global issues and been featured in magazines such as The National Geographic, TIME, and Newsweek. Ed sees himself as a long-form visual storyteller and dedicates himself to telling stories of social or political significance.
He often refers to the phrase "candid intimacy" for his work - people often look at his work and ask "How do you get so close to the people, but make it look like they don't know you're there?" When a photo achieves "candid intimacy," the observer is able to see into the soul of the subject. It is tough to achieve candid intimacy, especially when people are adverse to having their photos taken.
More and more of his work is being shot from his hip or his shoulder, to avoid provoking people who are not favorable to the lens. Sometimes the best magic appears in images that are shot without staring into the viewfinder. Ed emphasizes that it is crucial to maintain an open heart and open mind, instead of settling for what one sees on the surface. Cameras are a passport into another world that you would never experience otherwise.
