“How the interplay of light and vegetative growth influences yield”
The observation of yield fluctuations (irregular bearing) was my research focus. In trying to build upon previous research one realizes that this subject has been previously researched in very broad terms and in large scales of observations (such as countries, large production areas, whole orchards, whole trees, etc.).
Ultimately, if the irregular bearing phenomena occurs due to fruit presence, then is necessary to switch the scale of observation to the one that is relevant to fruit presence or absence, in other words if one pretends to link fruit presence to growth problems, is then necessary to know where the fruit is growing and study it. That relevant unit is the single avocado shoot.
After that mental switch in the approach and following more than 500 single Hass avocado shoots for 3 years at field conditions in Riverside CA, true vegetative and reproductive patterns became obvious when comparing Hass avocado shoots bearing fruits vs non-bearing ones and their collective presence and behavior became a way to describe the patterns at the whole canopy.
I had the opportunity to travel and capture the resilience of these shoot level growth patterns in South Africa, Chile (even comparing high vs low density and with growth regulators) and more anecdotally in Israel and Peru. Furthermore, I was given a chance to collect this data on the Maluma variety.
Interestingly and adding to the previous, there was one main environmental variable that was able to alter those patterns in a predictable way: exposure to sunlight. I will share these observations and the data that supports why trellising avocados should be consider together with new avocado varieties that are more adaptable to it.

Grafted Avocado Tree - How does Pollination Work? (Time Lapse)First we show you an Avocado Tree growing from seed this is amazing.
Then we discuss the fascinating but brilliant world of Avocado Pollination and Cross Pollination.
There are 2 Categories of Avocado Trees, A type where the female flower opens in the morning & male in the afternoon. Then there is B type where the female opens in the afternoon and the female opens in the morning.
Each flower will open first as a female then the next day that same flower will open as a Male.
In this video we show using time lapse how to make sure that your Avocado tree won't just drop all it's flowers and give you no fruit.

The mysteries of the avocado flowerDavid Pattemore talks about avocados flowers and the research being carried out by his team at Plant & Food Research to discover the effects of cooler temperatures on the flowers.
After an initial career in conservation, David headed to Princeton University on a Fulbright Award in 2005 to begin his PhD.
As a scientist with Plant & Food Research he now studies the pollination of economically important crops, bringing an ecologist’s perspective to production systems.

The Amazing Sex Life of the Avocado TreeAvocados have a strange method of reproduction. All avocado flowers open twice. First as a functional female; the following day the same flower will open as a functional male.
To make things more interesting there are two flowering types called "A" type and "B" type. "A" type trees will have female flowers in the morning. Roughly 36 hours later those female flowers will reopen as males.
"B" type trees will have female flowers in the afternoon. Roughly 12 hours later those female flowers will reopen as males the following morning.
Notice that having both "A" and "B" type trees close to each other improves pollination because "A" type trees have female flowers at the same time that "B" type trees have male flowers and vice versa.

You DO NOT need Type A & Type B Avocado Trees For Successful Fruit Production! BUT IT CAN HELP :-)Charles Malki, Biologist & Plant Expert from http://ivorganics.com/ teaches all about Avocado plant care, including: (1) how & when to fertilize, (2) sunburn protection of tree trunk, branches and leaves, (3) that only one (1) avocado is sufficient for fruit production, however, planting a Type A (such as Hass) and a Type B (such as Fuerte) Avocados can in the same garden / orchard can increase fruit production by 5-20%.

4/01/12 UPDATE:I will do a follow up video but I can tell you this experiments was only 20% successful. I may have encountered several issues. One we had a rare freeze in late December 2011 it got down to 29 for a couple of hours and my irrigation system broke. Some of the buds were growing and after that event a lot died. Also I think the time of the year was wrong. YOu cut a tree and bark graft in the winter and spring come and the tree explodes with new growth, it took the wind out of some grafts that were growing.
As of right now I'm going back to veneer grafting for top working trees is is 95% successful. I will probably try to do it and the summer.

Avocado Trees and Water NeedsThis customer bought these trees from me in January, it is early May when I return for another delivery and a service call about leaf dropping.
The most common question about caring for citrus and avocado trees are
"how do I know if I am watering enough?"
"how often I should I water?"
"when do you know if is wet enough?"
As I have often said in the videos you should almost always see new growth, fresh leaf buds, fresh new leaves, flower buds, developing fruit.
Citrus and avocado trees in the ground are best watered once a week or every other week, except during periods of heavy rain and cold weather.
In general these results hold about true most of the time.
If the leaves on your tree begin to turn yellow and drop a lot, then you let the tree get too dry.
If the leaves begin to droop and slowly turn brown and stay on the tree it is dying from too much water.

Train-A-Tree - Avocados #1With the Train-A-Tree system you will create stronger, healthier, and more balanced trees with less pruning. Train-A-Tree works great on all citrus, avocado, fruit, and non- fruiting trees to keep trees smaller, more manageable and easier to harvest. Train-A-Tree also makes backyard orchard culture easy while producing more fruit that's larger and sweeter. We believe that proper tree training is the most import thing you can do for your trees, after watering of course. Pruning is secondary, important, but secondary to training.

Jim Bacon, Hass and Lamb Hass Avocado Fruit Tasting.AVIIn this late December avocado fruit review we look at 3 different avocado fruit; Jim Bacon an "B" flower type avocado tree and very cold tolerant, Hass, an "A" flower type and not very cold tolerant and Lamb Hass, an "A" flower type and not very cold tolerant either. Finding good tasting and meaty "B" flower type fruit is not always that easy. The "B" flower types, other than Sir Prize Hass, are not always that appealing to people. Fuerte is one of the best "B" flower type fruit and a solid performer in colder climates, but people are often turned off by the strong flavor of the Fuerte fruit.
Jim Bacon was once in large scale production in Southern California, older trees dating back at least 50 years can be found in pockets of the Southern Calfornia foothills. On a recent delivery and planting in Sierra Madre my customer there had several old Jim Bacon Avocado trees and said the fruit was among the best he had ever tasted. I took some of his fruit and compare here with the first harvest of the new Jim Bacon trees in my area.
I also purchased some Lamb Hass fruit from a Fallbrook fruit stand and compare the Lamb Hass with the Jim Bacon and the regular Hass for texture, basic flavor and oil content in a totally unscientific and personally biased approach. Obviously I was expecting great qualities from the Lamb Hass, but I have to give the old line Jim Bacon a big thumbs up. Jim Bacon does not have the watery texture of regular Bacon, it was very creamy and smooth in tast. The fruit is also smaller in size to Bacon. In colder climates I would be very much in favor of planting Jim Bacon pollinated by Mexicola for a solid winter harvest of quality avocado fruit.
Avocado Mexicola.AVIMexicola avocado tree, a cold tolerant, heavy producing avocado tree. No Avocado tree does was well be frozen, but Mexicola and Mexicola Grande will take a hard frost when established and bounce back with a very heavy fall yield of fruit.
These trees grow fast and produce a lot when young. Mexicola is not a large tree, maybe 15ft if you leave it alone. Mexicola Grande can become a very large avocado tree, 30 feet tall no problem.

Avocado Tree Growing Mistake Watering.AVIAn avocado tree customer from last year ordered more fruit trees and upon arrival at the home I was shocked to see had bad off the Reed and Lamb Hass trees were. Avocado Tree Growing Water n Fertilizer IssuesAt this delivery in Oceanside CA I meet with a customer who has paid too much and got too little in the way of quality avocado trees from a local retailer. The trees they bought were sunburned and not vigorous at all. The first step was increase watering, since the soil is very sand and on slope, so the soil moisture is always going to be problem.
Next was to start a regular fertilizer program using some ammonium sulfate and horse manure. The customers have several horses and the money put into the mouth of the horse produces excellent plant food at the back end of the horse. I usually suggest 4 inches of raw manure at least 3 feet around the trees.
I will return at the end of the summer to see how the trees improved and how well they buyers are taking care of the trees they bought from me.
How to cultivate a dwarf avocado tree with potential high productivity?Hi, welcome to JSWandFamily channel, in this video I am going to show you how to cultivate a dwarf avocado tree (Persea americana) with potential high yield of fruits. Today this 5 month old avocado tree has 3 branches and 8 large leaves. However, it is a 9-inch in height young avocado tree. Nine weeks ago, I used a clipper to prune away the terminal bud of this young avocado tree when it was a seedling and left only the first leaf on its trunk. Within a week after pruning, three locations on the trunk with leaflets started to grow their buds in between the trunk and each leaflet. Those were the 3 branches originated. Nevertheless, the branch located at the highest position grew much faster than the other two branches and the branch at the lowest position remained under-development since then. Here I show you the very beginning first leaf now degenerated and dried up in brown color, hanging on the number 2 highest branch. As you can see clearly, the highest branch among three already took the role of supportive function of the dead fragment of the original trunk.
Today I will continue to prune away the terminal section of this largest branch above the first leaf of it. As you can see, I just make this avocado tree about one-third shorter than it used to be by a single cutting. I would expect at least two new branches will be generated on the remainder of this branch due to this pruning.
This pruning technique will apply to the second branch at the left-hand side of the trunk a few weeks from now and again I would expect 2 more new branches can be generated below the first leaf of this branch. This frequent pruning ends up one leaf per branch approach that should make this tree to develop more than 1000 branches easily. In addition, I also predict that pruning the second largest branch will promote the growth of the third, underdeveloped branch. I intend to cultivate this avocado tree as a house plant and I will place it near a sunny window, pruning and grafting as needed in the future. This dwarf tree will not only look beautiful, but it may also produce abundant fruits 3 to 5 years from now as well, so that I can pick the fresh and ripe fruits from it easily. Thank you for watching our video.

Editable Garden
Hi Im Steve Mcshanes with Steve McShanes Nursery and today Im here to talk to you about Citrus and avocado. Today Im here to talk to you about the excitement of editable gardening. Specifically Citrus and avocado. Citrus and avocado do very well in through out most of our state. I'm going to focus on the fun of your own harvest out of your own garden and that where making your own food from wonderful things like avocados come from. This is a family recipe that going to knock your socks of my best friends and family members. But lets talks about what it takes to get to that point. First let me touch bases on avocados. Avocados do very very well a long the coast and some inline valleys. One of things that people are always concern about is How cold does it get near my house? Most avocado can take down about 28 degrees. Some of the Mexican varieties like forta can take it down to about 24 degrees. Hass everybody loves hass. Hass is a little bit more frost sensitive. Some of the best varieties that I recommend are forta, bacon. With that said avocados can do well. Selecting a good tree is key but more importantly is getting it established is really key. That is digging a whole that is two or three times the size of the container using a good planting mix a starter fertilizer and B1. Those are the three things that university of California tells us are keys to succeeding. A good planting mix like I have right here: This planting mix is well balanced. Its got organic material and bark conditioners including chicken manure that help loosen up the soil and allow for permeation and nutrients. A starter fertilizer applied to the whole is key. And now a days you can get these bio gradable tea bags that get thrown in the whole. Finally planting with the B1 using that with your primary watering is very very important. Some other tips to keeping your avocado happy and healthy continuously fertilizing is important Two, three times a year very very key certainly the spring as we go into the fall.
Now a thing or two on Citrus. If you think avacdo is great. Citrus is even better because you can grow citrus is more of California. Some things I would say is look for the right variety for your area. This is here is a uracia lemon very good throughout most of the state. It can take it down to about 24 or 25 degrees. The other thing I look for is selecting a nice tree is look at this new growth very vagarious very happy. Like the avocado getting the tree established is very critical. Use a good planting mix, use B1 and use a starter fertilizer thats what the University of California tells us to use and thats what I tell everybody else.
Some things I want to point first and for most. A lot of people ask about pruning citrus. I tell people Dont prun citrus unless you have too and when you do prun its better to prun in the spring then in the winter. Just because of frost concern. Some things to consider as well when selecting that tree for your backyard dwarf is the way to go. Dwarf citrus get to about 6 to 8 feet. You can see this tree right here is graphed. This graphed recognizes a root stock that has better disease resistant and keeps the tree with in size. This here being the variety that its chosen in the case of this a Mexican lime. Many many things to keep in mind. Often insects can be the concern as well I always like to use a horncortinal oil or a organic solutions. One of my favorites that have come on the market is this Caption Jakes dead bug brew. This is a fantastic solution. Its got spentic in its a organic and natural solution of fending off pests and Ill tell ya it really works. Another one of the exciting things I say is to try things like espasntaing citrus. Citrus is very flexible and with the right training over time. You can have a entire fence covered by a citrus tree. That produces your very own fruit. The real key is that you can grow citrus and avocado. And just like commercial producers in California we can succeed. There's nothing like editable gardening and citrus and avocado are super exciting and easy to grow in California.
