The Man Behind The Traffic SignalIt was Morgan's experience while driving along the streets of Cleveland that led to his invention of a traffic signal device.
The first American-made automobiles were introduced to U.S. consumers not long after the turn of the century. It was not uncommon for bicycles, animal-powered wagons and new gasoline-powered motor vehicles to share the same streets and roadways with pedestrians. According to tradition, it was after witnessing a collision between an automobile and a horse-drawn carriage that Morgan became convinced that something should be done to improve automobile safety.
The Morgan traffic signal was a T-shaped pole unit that featured three hand-cranked positions: Stop, Go and an all-directional stop position. This third position halted traffic in all directions to allow pedestrians to cross streets more safely. Its one advantage over others of its type was the ability to operate it from a distance using a mechanical linkage. Morgan sold the rights to his traffic signal to the General Electric Corporation for $40,000.
On 10 December 1868, the first traffic lights were installed outside the British Houses of Parliament in London, by the railway engineer J. P. Knight. They resembled railway signals of the time, with semaphore arms and red and green gas lamps for night use. The gas lantern was turned with a lever at its base so that the appropriate light faced traffic. Unfortunately, it exploded on 2 January 1869, injuring the policeman who was operating it.
The modern electric traffic light is an American invention. As early as 1912 in Salt Lake City, Utah, policeman Lester Wire invented the first red-green electric traffic lights. On 5 August 1914, the American Traffic Signal Company installed a traffic signal system on the corner of 105th Street and Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. It had two colours, red and green, and a buzzer, based on the design of James Hoge, to provide a warning for colour changes. The design by James Hoge (USPTO # 1251666 Sept. 22, 1913) allowed Police and Fire stations to control the signals in case of emergency. The first four-way, three-colour traffic light was created by police officer William Potts in Detroit in 1920. In 1923, Garrett Morgan patented a traffic signal device, although it was not a precursor of the modern traffic light. Ashville, Ohio claims to be the location of the oldest working traffic light in the United States, used at an intersection of public roads until 1982 when it was moved to a local museum.
The first interconnected traffic signal system was installed in Salt Lake City in 1917, with six connected intersections controlled simultaneously from a manual switch. Automatic control of interconnected traffic lights was introduced March 1922 in Houston, Texas. The first automatic experimental traffic lights in England were deployed in Wolverhampton in 1927.
Ampelmännchen pedestrian traffic signals have come to be seen as a nostalgic sign for the former German Democratic Republic.
The color of the traffic lights representing stop and go are likely derived from those used to identify port (red) and starboard (green) in maritime rules governing right of way, where the vessel on the left must stop for the one crossing on the right.

Uber Unleashes Its Self-Driving Car On PittsburghThe cars are just going to go ahead and take it from here. Uber is totally pulling a Kitt from "Knight Rider" and introducing its self-driving cars to the streets of Pittsburgh. Full disclosure: It's not nearly as sexy as a Pontiac Firebird.
Feast your eyes on that autonomous hybrid Ford Fusion. This unique Uber car will operate in the Steel City over the coming weeks while collecting mapping data and testing self-driving capabilities. And that's all done with some high-tech sensors: laser scanners, radars, hi-res cameras — that sort of thing.
If all goes well, the driverless coalition Uber partnered with last month — which includes Lyft, Ford, Volvo and Google — could have a little more proof that cars sans drivers aren't as scary as some believe. Heck, they might even be safer.
Uber said it's still getting the technology right, so the car won't be totally driving itself. To ensure your safety, there will be a person in the driver's seat to take over manual control — you know, just in case the driver gets in an "I, Robot" type of situation.

Ghana shares new superlab with West African scientists“For once researchers in Ghana can start to dream. Right now you are not limited by the absence of equipment,” says Lawrence Borquaye, assistant manager of the new central laboratory at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The lab, opened in May, cost the university US$6.5 million to build and fill with some of the most advanced lab equipment in the world.
The idea behind it is to reduce costs by sharing equipment between individual departments. And the novel collaborative approach is even more ambitious than that: it is open to researchers from other universities both in Ghana and other West African countries. The lab’s designers are confident that the fees charged will help pay for its upkeep.

Robert Smith, Vista Equity Partners, at 2015 Color of Wealth SummitRobert F. Smith, Chairman & CEO of Vista Equity Partners, in a conversation with Dr. Maya Rockeymoore, President & CEO of the Center for Global Policy Solutions, on The Power of Opportunity. The two discuss how people of color are restricted from certain spaces and opportunities tied to wealth creation, which contributes to the racial wealth gap. For more information on the 2015 Color of Wealth Summit in Washington, DC, visit our website: http://globalpolicysolutions.org/2015colorofwealthsummit/
For every dollar in wealth held by the typical white family in 2011, the typical Latino and African-American families only own six and five cents respectively. Lost in the conversation about inequality in America has been the fact that racial and ethnic wealth inequality is more stark, has a devastating impact on households of color, and, if left unchecked, will have profound implications for the U.S. economy as the nation’s demographics shift over the next few decades.
The summit seeks to engage Members of Congress, Congressional staff, the media, and the public in a dialogue about the racial wealth gap, its effect on marginalized households, its impact on the U.S. economy, and solutions for closing the gap.

Is Giving Money Directly to the Poor a Good Idea?"No one person has the same goal or aspiration," says Paul Niehaus, President and Co-founder of GiveDirectly, "And what you get when you give people money and let them use it is this real rich human experience where everyone does something a bit different."
GiveDirectly is changing the way people think about charity. The non-profit was founded in 2008 and is designed to help people living in extreme povery through cash transfers via mobile phones. The recipients use their mobile phones to receive the money, which they are allowed to spend as they wish. This philosophy varies greatly from traditional third party charities which largely decide how a recipient should spend the money.
"Something important happened in development around 2000, which is we decided to scientific experimental testing," explains Niehaus. "When you start doing science, when you put two things head-to-head and ask 'what's the impact?' there are surprises. Cash transfer, which is literally just giving money to poor people, has turned out to be one of those really big positive surprises."
About 8 minutes.

Jerry Lawson @CGEJerry Lawson, that genius and creator of the first cartridge based home video game system. 2 years before the Atari. The cartridges looked like 8 tracks on purpose. 70s cool, man. Check out his newly "released" 80's Atari 2600 cartridges that are the first and only 3-d 2600 games as of 2011. And he made them 30 years ago. He founded Videosoft, and made the Fairchild Channel F game system.
Jerry Lawson Great Day in GamingInternational Game Developers Association - Minority Interest Group
honors African American Video Game Pioneer
Jerry Lawson at 25th Annual GDC Conference
(February 28, 2011 - San Francisco,California) On Friday, March 4th from 12:30 to 1:30 during the 25th Annual
Game Developers Conference (GDC) at the Moscone Center, the International Game Developers Association
(IDGA) – Minority Special Interest Group (SIG) will honor Gerald A. Lawson(aka Jerry), creator of the world's
first cartridge-based video game system, the Fairchild Channel F. Lawson was also the sole black member of
the Homebrew Computer Club, a group of early computer hobbyists which would produce a number of industry
legends, including Apple founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. The special recognition for Mr. Lawson will
be held during the 7th Annual IGDA Minority SIG Social Gathering at the IGDA Booth, Lobby South Hall.
“When I learned of Jerry’s existence, his story and his struggles in the early days of the video game industry
I cried,” said Joseph Saulter, the Founder and Chairman of Entertainment Arts Research, Inc. and chairman
of the IGDA-Diversity Committee, “I said to myself, ‘how could I, how could our African American youth and
current leaders in the video game industry not know, cherish and honor this man.”
Developed in 1976, the Fairchild Channel F was the first cartridge-based video game system and pre-dated
Atari. The Channel F system pioneered the cartridge based video game console and involved early attempts at
software distribution via cable television. During development of the Channel F in the early-mid 1970s, Lawson
was Chief Hardware Engineer and director of engineering and marketing for Fairchild Semiconductor's video
game division. He also founded and ran Videosoft, a video game development company which made software
for the Atari 2600 in the early 1980s. Lawson also produced one of the earliest arcade games, Demolition
Derby, which debuted in a southern California pizzeria shortly after Pong.
Fred Swaniker: The leaders who ruined Africa, and the generation who can fix itBefore he hit eighteen, Fred Swaniker had lived in Ghana, Gambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. What he learned from a childhood across Africa was that while good leaders can't make much of a difference in societies with strong institutions, in countries with weak structures, leaders could make or break a country. In a passionate talk Swaniker looks at different generations of African leaders and imagines how to develop the leadership of the future.

Rwanda | USA | 25 min
Rwanda experienced a violent civil war between its two main ethnic groups, the Hutu and the Tutsi, that killed around 1 million citizens in 1994. Militant Hutu left the country in a state of poverty after using machetes to maim, rape, and murder civilians.
Twenty years later, survivors of the genocide are using technology to improve life in Rwanda, specifically in the capital city, Kigali.TakePart World producer Alex Stapleton visited open-innovation space K-Lab, which offers free education and an environment in which citizens can share tech ideas. Aphrodice Mutangana created the Incike app to crowdsource money for those in need. Alex traveled with Aphrodice to meet Stephanie, a woman who lost her entire family and home in the genocide. Thanks to the Incike app, Stephanie now has a house with a kitchen and access to essentials such as food and clothing.

Nigeria robots driving in Africa technology hub!(Africa Technology) "Jimmy" the robot drives across the floor and as soon as it sees an obstacles - it turns and moves around it...
... It is in many way an analogy between the work at one of the biggest technology hubs in Africa and how they aim to get round some of the biggest problems on the continent - it's called Co-Creation and it's in Yaba, Lagos, Nigeria.
"This is cutting edge innovation," says Tunji Eleso as he shows us round the hub. "We are providing a place they can work out of, where they can create their interesting innovations and partner with each other to make things happen."
A model helicopter flies around the room, a 3D printer is being tweaked on the side and all about are young Nigerian men and women at laptops working on a variety of the best Africa technology and software.
"This is a children's book for the iPad," says Bayo, one designer as he holds his invention for us to see - a colourful display of traditional African animal cartoons. "We want to promote African values using mobile technology... so this is is African folk tales with moral undertones to it."
At this colourful tech hub, young Nigerians are given power, fast internet and the tools to collaborate all for a membership fee - from as little as 30,000Naira ($200) a month to 1,000,000 Naira ($6000) a year for corporate organisations. Co-Creation describes it's mission as "accelerating the application of social capital and technology for economic prosperity in Nigeria" - and in turn has technology collaborations, competitions and camps to foster and encourage young start-ups.
But many of the other young entrepreneurs are reluctant to discuss the technology they are working on: "They are classified projects we can't discuss until they launch!"
Sone of their projects launched include Efiko (you can find it here: http://www.efiko.com.ng/ ) which is a mobile self-help tool for students; Tiket Mobile (found here: http://www.tiketmobile.com/ ) which helps you get information and buy bus tickets for across Lagos; or Budgit - a website that tries to simplify the complex Nigerian budget ( found here: http://www.yourbudgit.com/ )
You can find the Co-Creation website here: http://cchubnigeria.com/

TEDxTempleU - Mohamed Niang - Malo Traders LLC: The Harvest FairyMOHAMED ALI NIANG is a senior International Business and Entrepreneurship major at Temple University, with minors in Economics and Corporate Sustainability. His efforts both in and out of the classroom have been widely recognized: he was part of the winning team at the 2010 Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER) International Case Competition, recipient of the 2010 Sol Tuttleman Memorial Prize, and was recognized at the Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition, Temple University's Innovative Idea Competition and Pace University's Pitch Contest and National Collegiate Innovators and Inventors' Alliance. He is the founder of Malo Traders LLC, a social venture dedicated to fighting malnutrition and poverty in West Africa by purchasing and fortifying rice in micro-nutrients by small scale farmers.
In his TEDxTalk, Mohamed discusses his social venture Malo Traders LLC and how its core values and mission have led, and continue to lead, to radical change in West Africa (Mali). By tracing the history of the foundation of Malo Traders, which came about during the international food riots in 2008, Mohamed discusses the need for change to fight against what he sees as the root cause of anger and political unrest: hunger and malnutrition. Highlighting some of the practices of Malo Traders, he shows how one seemingly simple concept can help many areas of society, from those suffering from malnutrition to the farmers in poverty because of wasted crops. He ends by focusing on the three values of Malo Traders - Innovation, Collaboration, and Compassion - and points out that each of us has a passion that these values can push us forward to help solve.
