The Letter" is a song written by Wayne Carson Thompson and made famous by The Box Tops and their singer, Alex Chilton, released in 1967 on the album of the same name. It reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the UK singles chart. The song was popular during the Vietnam War and was also included in the computer game Battlefield Vietnam. Rolling Stone ranked it #363 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The Music Explosion - Little Bit O'Soul The Music Explosion was an American garage rock band from Galion, (Near Mansfield) Ohio, discovered and signed by record producers Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz. The quintet is best known for their #2 Hot 100 1967 hit "Little Bit O'Soul" that received gold record status by the R.I.A.A. Written by John Carter and Ken Lewis, who had previously written big hits for The Ivy League and Herman's Hermits, the song (Laurie Records #3380, subsequently reissued on Buddah Records) was the band's only top 40 hit.

Kasenetz, Katz and Elliot Chiprut produced "Little Bit O' Soul", paving the way for bubblegum pop bands like Ohio Express and 1910 Fruitgum Company. "Little Bit O' Soul" has been subsequently covered by several bands including The Ramones; Dodging Susan; and 2 Live Crew, who sampled the melody. On its own, the flip "I See The Light" (featuring a surf guitar bridge) was covered by The Fourth Amendment and had a resurgence on some stations in the Midwest four years later.

Lead singer Jamie Lyons also recorded several solo singles on Laurie while still recording with the group. His first single, "Soul Struttin'" became a Northern Soul hit in several Northeast regions. Fixed audio-sync as well. Sound engineer of this famous mono mix was Keith Grant. The Buckinghams - Don't You Care (HQ Stereo,1967) The follow-up to The Buckinghams' debut chart-topper, "Kind of a Drag,", "Don't You Care" (written by Gary Beisbier, James William Guercio & Jim Holvay and produced and arranged by Guercio) continued with the formula of brass rock meets easy listening to create roughly two minutes and thirty seconds of some of the best ear candy to be found on AM radio in 1967.

Recorded for their second LP, "Time & Changes", "Don't You Care" was released as their 1st single on the Columbia label and became the second top 40 hit for The Buckinghams in 1967 when it found its way to the #6 spot on Billboard's Hot 100 in March. It was followed by three more hits, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" (#5), "Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song)" (#12) and "Susan" (#11), in that same year and then The Buckinghams disappeared from the Top 40 forever. But for that one year The Buckinghams got so much airplay they were named by Billboard magazine as "The Most Listened to Band in America". Whether they were or not can surely be debated when you consider the competition for that year (Beatles, Stones, Supremes, Monkees, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Turtles, and on and on), but it's for sure that someone was listening to "Don't You Care" as it spent 14 weeks on the charts and ended up in the #39 spot for the year.

Diana Ross and The Supremes: Reflections The Supremes was an American female singing group and the premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Originally founded as the Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes' repertoire included doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway show tunes, psychedelic soul, and disco. They were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and are, to date, America's most successful vocal group with 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland--Dozier--Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, the Supremes rivaled the Beatles in worldwide popularity, and their success made it possible for future African American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success.
Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit, formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptations). Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as the Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio.
During the mid-1960s, the Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. Ross left to pursue a solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell, at which point the group's name reverted to the Supremes. After 1972, the lineup changed more frequently; Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all became members of the group during the mid-1970s. The Supremes disbanded in 1977 after an 18-year run.

The Tremeloes - Silence is Golden The Tremeloes are an English rock and roll band, founded in 1958 in Dagenham, Essex. The Tremeloes are one of the longest surviving, still playing regularly more than 50 years after the group's founding. They had fourteen UK and two U.S. Top 20 hit singles. They were the first south of England group to top the chart in the beat boom era.

The band first got together in 1958, when the original members were all in their teens. They were closer in years and background to early British beat bands like The Shadows than to the British Invasion bands with which they subsequently became associated. The original line-up of Brian Poole (vocals, guitar), Alan Blakely (drums), Alan Howard (saxophone), and Graham Scott (guitar), had Buddy Holly's Crickets as their inspiration. This version of the band did not stay together long, however, and Blakley quickly switched to guitar (which Poole relinquished) after Dave Munden joined on the drums. Munden proved not only to be a very talented percussionist, but also a good singer. This gave the group a third vocalist, which would prove essential to their success further on in their history. Howard also switched to bass soon after Munden joined.

The band then known as the Tremilos thanks to a misspelling, built up a following at local dances and clubs, and then broke into the U.S. Air Force base circuit. By 1961, they had turned professional, and the group's line-up changed again when Graham Scott left and was replaced by Rick West, who had previously played with Tony Rivers and the Castaways. West's arrival was key to the group's long-term success, providing the band with a classically trained guitarist. They also got a manager, Peter Walsh, who already represented such acts as The Brook Brothers, and the vocal group The Kestrels. The band's first break happened soon after when they were spotted by Jimmy Grant, the producer of the BBC's Saturday Club, who got them an audition for the BBC. This led to the group becoming regulars on radio.

On New Years Day, 1962, Decca, looking for a beat group, auditioned two promising young bands: The Tremeloes and The Beatles. They chose the Tremeloes, based on the fact that they were based in London and, thus, would be more accessible than the Beatles. They recorded a series of records backing other artists, including The Vernons Girls and disc jockey, Jimmy Savile, on the latter's version of "Ahab the Arab". They appeared in the film, Just for Fun, but early singles of "Twist Little Sister" and "Keep on Dancing" failed to find an audience. The then line-up was lead vocalist Brian Poole, lead guitarist Ricky West, keyboardist Alan Blakely, bassist Alan Howard and drummer Dave Munden.

The Tremeloes first charted with a version of "Twist and Shout" (1963. This was followed by a chart topping cover of The Contours' U.S. million-seller "Do You Love Me" in the same year. The Tremeloes version of "Do You Love Me" sold over 250,000 copies.

When Poole and Howard left the band in 1966, Alan Blakely took over leadership of the group, and Len "Chip" Hawkes, father of 1990s hitmaker Chesney Hawkes, replaced Howard. Poole pursued a career as a solo artist, with little success, and soon left the music industry.

After switching from Decca to CBS Records, the Tremeloes started an even more successful hit run from 1967 onwards with Cat Stevens' "Here Comes My Baby"; " Hello World " and two Italian hits translated into English, "Suddenly You Love Me" (which is Riccardo Del Turco's "Uno tranquillo" - "One Quiet Man") and "My Little Lady" (based on Orietta Berti's "Non illuderti mai" - "Never Deceive Yourself"), and their Number one recording of an old Four Seasons' B-side, "Silence is Golden". Both this last single and "Here Comes My Baby" also entered the Top Twenty of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on CBS' co-owned Epic Records. McKenzie's song became an instant hit. The lyrics tell the listeners, "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair". Due to the difference between the lyrics and the actual title, the title is often quoted as "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)". "Penny Lane" is a song by The Beatles, written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon/McCartney. Recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions, "Penny Lane" was released in February 1967 as one side of a double A-sided single, along with "Strawberry Fields Forever". The song was later included on the Magical Mystery Tour LP (1967). The single was the result of the record company wanting a new release after several months of no new Beatles releases. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the song at #449 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The song's title is derived from the name of a street in the band's hometown, Liverpool. The area that surrounds its junction with Smithdown Road is also commonly called Penny Lane. Locally the term "Penny Lane" was the name given to Allerton Road and Smithdown Road and its busy shopping area. Penny Lane is named after James Penny, an 18th century slave trader. McCartney and Lennon grew up in the area and they would meet at Penny Lane junction in the Mossley Hill area to catch a bus into the centre of the city. The street is an important landmark, sought out by most Beatles fans touring Liverpool. In the past, street signs saying "Penny Lane" were constant targets of tourist theft and had to be continually replaced. Eventually, city officials gave up and simply began painting the street name on the sides of buildings. This practice was stopped in 2007 and more theft-resistant "Penny Lane" street signs have since been installed though some are still stolen. The Abbey Road sign is also frequently stolen for the same reason.

The original US promo single mix of "Penny Lane" had an additional flourish of piccolo trumpet notes at the end of the song. This mix was quickly superseded by one without the last trumpet passage, but not before a handful of copies had been pressed and sent to radio stations. These recordings are among the rarest and most valuable Beatles collectibles. A stereo mix of the song with the additional trumpet added back in was included on the US Rarities compilation in 1980, and is included on an alternate take of the song released on Anthology 2 in 1996.

This song was written by Roger Penzabene as a testament to his love for his wife. After learning of her cheating he was heartbroken. He then wrote "I Wish It Would Rain' describing his pain, then finally "I Could Never Love Another" to finish the trilogy of how he felt.

Unable to handle the extreme pain and unwilling to leave his wife, he wrote the last two songs as personal statements to her, publicizing the pain she caused him. After both songs were completed and recorded, tragically Roger committed suicide.

Back in 1967, when The Seekers returned home to Australia for a visit, little did they know that their free concert at the Myer Music Bowl in their home town of Melbourne would break attendance records for the Southern hemisphere and TV ratings records for Australia, a record which still stands today.

The concert was filmed for TV and is now available as part of the DVD 'The Seekers at Home and Down Under'. As no promo video has been released for the original (1966 single) version of the song, it is this which I've used for the audio, extending the video to include the middle 8 bars. (Judith almost tripped me up by swapping the last two lines of the song around, but I've edited the song to match!) The DVD has the live audio, and is available on Amazon.
