Sulfur polymer, a very abundant element, is also produced as a byproduct of the petrochemicals sector. It has not been used in conventionally to make functional materials. This is because polymeric sulfur, which is unstable, decomposes back into its monomer. Inverse vulcanisation is a method that produces stable polymeric materials that contain elemental sulfur as a major constituent. We present a number of alternatives to inverse vulcanisation, which can be either industrial byproducts or bio-derived renewables.
