This week, we were pleased as punch (pun intend) to hear the news that a one of our short film projects, “Knockout Gal”, (Directed by Tom Leaman, www.tom-leaman.co.uk), has been Shortlisted for the Big Cardiff Mini Film Festival In the Art/Experimental Category. Knockout Gal Started its life as one of the monthly film projects at the “South Wales Screen Network”, a small group that sets a film brief every month, and then encourages its members to form groups and collaborate on the aforementioned brief. The Brief was to create a film themed on Rivalry, with one stipulation, there was to be no dialogue. The Group brainstormed Ideas for the piece finally settling on a boxing theme. First time director Tom Leaman then fleshed the idea out into a script, and they began a speedy pre-production. Coming up with the “Prince of Wales” Boxing Gym in Grangetown Cardiff as a Location (many thanks to Wayne Bowden, for all his help) and managed to talk United Filmdom’s Chris McFall into shooting the piece. Shot in 6 hours the film had to be turned around fast, From the rushes Tom Produced a rough cut before handing over to United Filmdom so we could score a final soundtrack; basing the music around the rhythmic snap of a boxers skipping rope. We tightened up the edit with a light recut, pulled time effects throughout to create the films final stylized look. Colour graded it to have a Hard polished feel, and added the CGI Title using VideoCoPilots Element Plugin. Again due to tight deadlines the final edit had to be turned around in under a day, but all in all we are delighted with how it came out.
