Langkawi Gliders, Paramotor/Paraglider Flying over Langkawi Island

submitted by tradingtraveler on 01/28/15 1

While driving around the island of Langkawi, Malaysia, we drove past a few paramotors or what I like to call paragliders (powered parachutes) setting up on a small strip of land set in between two rice paddies. I jammed on the motorbike brakes and pulled over to take a second look. Sure enough it was Paramotor tours being operated by Langkawi Gliders. We sat at watched two separate brave souls take to the air, but I wasn't quite convinced yet. I was a little fearful of taking off on a 15 meter wide strip of land with water on both sides; and then proceeding to fly over the ocean..... We decided to head back to the hotel and I couldn't stop thinking about that paramotor all night and thought to myself when the hell am I ever going to have to chance to fly over a beautiful white sandy beach in a paramotor. Probably few and far between..... The next day was our "beach day" in Langkawai just lounging on a beautiful white sand beach with small islands off in the distance. At about 3 p.m. I couldn't take it any longer and I decided we had to try the Paramotor. Much to my surprise, Brittany was all for it. She's usually a littler hesitant when is comes to "extreme events" especially something like this that didn't quite look risk free... Long story short we hired a taxi to take us out to the same strip in the middle of the rice paddy, signed our release form paid up (about $50 per person for a short 8 minute route) The incredibly friendly staff at Langkawi Gliders saw how pumped I was about this, and since we were both paying for the tour they decided to give us the longer 15 minute tour which went out over the ocean and then down the beach. The ride was stunning. We had beautiful views of the entire island and got some great video. Thanks again to Langkawi Gliders, everyone form the Pilot, paperwork attendant and several helpers were all super people and we highly recommend checking them out if you are into this type of thing. We then proceeded to hitchhike back to our hotel. Funny thing is, in all my excitement from the ride I waved a car down and asked a women for a ride back into town and we told her we would pay. Come to find out, she had no idea where she was going because she just picked up the rental car from the airport which she landed at just a few minutes prior. It was a crazy adventurous day to say the least. The kind woman let us out right in the middle of town and wouldn't accept our money. Another reason Malaysia has been our most underestimated city we've visited in South East Asia.
